  1. Are you here for approbation and acceptance, of do you just enjoy getting your two satang in and seeing how other people react to you opinions?

I've seen a few "false honor" or ingratiating posts. Some people do crave acceptance. Thailand attracts misfits. Misfits can't get the gals, so they come to the LOS.

do you take things online seriously, are you here for some light entertainment but willing to give an opinion or help when you can, or are you here to hear your own voice and massage your ego?

I came across a guy called Ron yesterday. He's happy to help.

does you posting style reflect the way you are in meatspace or do you employ a different persona when online?

I wear a toga or loin cloth when posting.

And that no matter how hard people try to cover their base nature, some of their true personality always outs in the way they comport themselves on the forum albeit in a fragmented and incomplete manner.

    True.

I ... have always been very forthright when i see or hear something that i consider nonsensical or ridiculous or just strikes me as wrong, i need to take a little poke at it, perhaps expose the person behind the words.

You think that's gonna change anything? I did notice your RIP comments, though, in that other thread. I'm kind of with you on that.

  2. Because the first car in Thailand was a gift from the English Queen to the King of Thailand.

In the UK they also happen to drive at the wrong side of the road.

OI! I'll have you know the left side is the right side and the right side is the wrong side. laugh.png

(Do you want a history lesson to explore the facts behind driving on the left?)

Do you want a history lesson to explore the facts behind driving on the left?

    Yes, I do.

Doesn't it have something to do with horses and carts. A long time ago I met a Frenchman (in Paris) who said that there is a perfect logic to driving on the left.

I forget what he said. But I do remember that he talked about horses and carts. I guess he was referring back to pre-Victorian times when horse-drawn carriages were the norm in Britain and Europe.

I do know that you're right and that there is a real reason why it's better to drive on the left.

As far as I understand it, (having said that, I am about to get flamed by our cogniscenti), I believe it goes back to the days of knights on hoseback...If they passed each other on the left, it allowed them to take a good swipe at their opponent with their sword. Since most people are / were right handed, this gave them a longer reach, otherwise they would have to reach across their own body and their horse. It also meant that they could hold their shield with their left hand, which meant that the shield guarded their vbody without obstructing their sword arm.

At least, that is what I recall, but I was always asleep in history lessons at school....

Comments as per above. This is what I now now remember. Thank you for reminding me.

The French man always said that the British system has a perfect logic.

It's to do with sword arms.

Way past my bed time, but that's exactly right. It's what the French man from Paris told me. Thanks.

  5. Last year, I did a quick trip to Kanchanaburi, but did not really have enough time to see all I wanted. Maybe I'll try to go back later this year, then take the train up to Tha Sao and go to Hellfire Pass.

Hopefully, the experience won't be as unpleasant as a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau 2 years ago - that still gives me the shudders. How can people be so evil?

My gf is not happy with the idea of a trip to Hellfire Pass... she thinks the area is too dangerous. Has anyone got any info on potential danger there?

None of my family were in Thailand/Burma in WWII, although an uncle died just before VJ Day. His job was to question Japanese POWs, in the Philippines (I think). One of my schoolteachers had been a POW in the far east. The poor beggar never recovered and was a permanent wreck, nerves shot to hell.

I've heard that Kanchanaburi is 100% safe. I've heard that casual tourists like the place; I've heard that serious tourists dislike the rank over-commercialization of it all. Take your pick.

I did a marketing trip to Poland many years ago before I moved to Thailand. I went to Warsaw and Krakow (spelling), but I couldn't bring myself to go Auschwitz.

How can people be so evil?

You said it. You really said it. But it's nothing new. We've been slaughtering each other for centuries.

Did you see a war movie called The Great Escape?

The cast was mainly American, but there were a lot of Brits and some Scots.

I remember one Scot was called Archie. He cracked up; tried to climb the barbed-wire fence; and got shot.

The other Scot escaped and met up later with the Richard Attenborough character. They got driven to a kind of small mountain. They were let out for a walk and were machine gunned.

    Is this a true story?

FYI ...Scots are Brits (albeit of a superior kind) pro tem.... but not all Brits are Scots.

The Great Escape was based on fact, of course with poetic licence on the part of the film-makers.Google for Stalag Luft iii, which was the name of the real camp in Lower Silesia (now part of Poland), from where the escapes ("Great Escape" and "The Wooden Horse") were made. There is a lot of information available

    Done it. Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia....Stalag_Luft_III

    Some quotes..............

Another notable prisoner was P. P. KumaramangalamDSO, MBE of the then British Indian Army and the future Chief of the Indian Army.

The tunnels were very deep — about 30 feet (9 m) below the surface.

As the war progressed, the German prison camps began to be overwhelmed with American prisoners.[6] The Germans decided that new camps would be built specifically for the U.S. airmen. In an effort to allow as many people to escape as possible, including the Americans, efforts on the remaining two tunnels increased.

Of 76 escapees, 73 were captured. Hitler initially wanted the escapees to be shot as an example to other prisoners, as well as Commandant von Lindeiner, the architect who designed the camp, the camp's security officer and the guards on duty at the time.

Hitler eventually relented and instead ordered SS head Himmler to execute more than half of the escapees. Himmler passed the selection on to General Artur Nebe. Fifty were executed singly or in pairs.[9][30] Roger Bushell, the leader of the escape, was shot by Gestapo official Emil Schulz just outside Saarbrücken, Germany.[23]

EDIT. Charles Bronson escaped, so did James Coburn (he crossed the Pyrenees Mountains into Italy).

  8. The female kind..............menstrates and everything.

On a serious note, it does puzzle me when I see farangs talking to their spouse in pigeon English. Don't they want them to learn?

In my soi I correct the wives of farang on there English. Not every word, just if the pronunciation or grammar is really wrong and they appreciate it. I've found by correcting people in the right way and not demeaning them, regardless of the subject or nationality, is always appreciated.

    Really?

If your english was being constantly corrected you would be ok with this?

It would get a little bit annoying don't you think?

If you have spent much time with non-native speakers, you would know that this can be the best way to help someone lear, if it is done with care. mjj's post points this out...please read the final sentence more carefully.

    What does "lear" mean?

    please read .... more carefully

    Good advice.

  9. Guess the province

    1. the "send them back to their own country" brigade

    2. the "kick them back into Malaysia" brigade

    3. the "if they don't like it here, why don't they just go back to where they came from" brigade

Above quotes taken from the news forum.

  10. Nevertheless, unless you have one foot in the grave the first line of defense against ill health is to address those life style choices which have a proven impact on health and life expectancy.

Smoking. Drinking. Obesity. Poor diet. Lack of exercise. Stress.

    Boredom also leads to stress.

It also leads to excessive postings on an anonymous internet forum, and the misconception that what you post has meaning to anyone else, but you.

That's just about the best comment I've ever come across on "an anonymous internet forum".

I can read between the lines. Thank you very much. And yes, you are so right.

  11. I've known them to be sharp on the combined weight, annoyingly I had a bag at 23kg and carry on about 2 kg, they made me put the extra 3kg into my hand luggage. maybe just bad luck, maybe just a bad day, but all I can do is report as found. smile.png

you must be kidding aren't you ?

I am flying BKK AIR frequently and I have NEVER EVER seen them weighing hand-luggage !

They just don't do that. therefore, not any kind of "combined weight" either.

and they are usually very very generous when it comes to checked-in luggage as well.

maybe you are talking about AirAsia but certainly not BKK Air.

Correct. This guy's either trolling or he's a one-off tourist (with a big mouth) rather than a frequent flyer.

BKK Air don't weigh hand luggage.

While I agree and have never been asked its a bit of a blanket statement to say they NEVER check.

I guess they would if your hand luggage was ridiculous.

It's a bit late now, but .. how much hand luggage did you have?

    Why don't you contact http://bangkokair.com/eng

  12. I'm still holding out for a nice, sage-seasoned homemadeb breakfast sausage patty like good old Jimmy Dean sausage.

I've actually looked up copycat recipes for Jimmy Dean Sausages. And one ingredient they all seem to agree is necessary is MSG. Lots of MSG. So I may try to do one of those recipes. But I'm pretty sure my efforts will fall at least a bit short because I'm not going to use Monosodium Glutamate.

    Sounds delicious!

  14. Hard to believe that some people can be so utterly stupid,I wouldn't expect and I'm probably right, anyone to buy or build a house for me during my lifetime,so why the hell should I do it for anyone else?

Then people complain when they are treated as walking ATMs,I've even seen stories on here of villages in Isaan, where the whole village comes and knocks on the Falang's door if they're a bit short of cash, hilarious!cheesy.gif

Talk about making a rod for your own back!

More excellence. You're really got it nailed.

  15. In my opinion they lived here without me and survived and now that i am here it does not mean that i am their meal ticket. If you start giving more and more is expected. When I arrived here they tried loaning money for stupid things. I refused and now our relation is good and they don't ask.

    Excellent.

  16. I'm surprised that this discussion hasn't thrown up the issue of dementia. What would you do if mentally incapable of looking after yourself. Its not a case of life support and hospital but a degradation into a state where you you can't take care of even the simplest of tasks. And I doubt you will be aware of it if it strikes. That in my opinion is one that should be considered.

Do you mean Alzheimers Disease (spelling)?

If so, are there any documented cases of farangs in Thailand who have suffered from this? It MUST have happened, and surely it WILL happen more often as the number of farangs in Thailand increases.

    http://www.alzheimer...tia-statistics/

If you reach 85 it looks as though you have approx 1 in 5 chance of getting it and then likelihood increases from there.

Then of course you can get it younger.

When you look at the number of retirees here there will likely be a large number that develop it.

Didn't Ronald Reagan get it younger?

    Just checked. Per Wikipedia:

    Alzheimer's disease

    Announcement and reaction

In August 1994, at the age of 83, Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease,[273] an incurable neurological disorder which destroys brain cells and ultimately causes death.[273][274] In November he informed the nation through a handwritten letter,[273] writing in part:

I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease... At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done... I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you.
