I grew up in a very 'White' town just outside of London.
You must be old. Even I cannot remember back that far.
Wow there are a lot of Haters on this site!
Longmead Estate in Epsom. During the nineties when I was growing up, my family and an Indian family where the only asian people in the area and they used to get their fence kicked in. It's changed now, completely, like many similar areas around London. People have learned how to integegrate! I'm sure many Asian families live there quite happily now which is why the location wasn't worth mentioning.
And what does "even I cannot remember back that far" mean? Thank God that not every family experiences racist attacks but that doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist in people's lives. My family never once retaliated, we let the police handle the situation. London and the Boroughs are a wonderful place for seeing a big mix of cultures... But I didn't start seeing that until I was 14... which was also when it flipped the other way and I had started seeing white kids getting robbed on the trains by black kids. (FYI, trainline Selhurst to London Bridge) info ok now guys!
Keep your OWN experiences coming... It's good reading them

Worst: I grew up in a very 'White' town just outside of London. We used to get rubbish thrown at the house (eggs on the walls and bricks through the window) My Dad's English, my Mum's Thai. The neighbours children would shout racist comments at us and I was regularly asked if my Dad had bought my Mum!
And where ? may I ask was this very "White" town just outside of London???
I don't understand why that information is important to you or what significance it has to the topic?

Hi All,
I feel that it will be a good idea to open a topic where people can describe their Best and Worst experience when integrating the Thai & Western cultures...
Yes there are many posts circulating about how somebody is settling into their new surroundings. But, if you can think of a situation that may be surprising to other readers or may be of help to people at the beginning of the journey... then please share.
I'll start one off.

Best: I like surprising local Thai people with my Bangkok accent. I look 100% Falang. They are confused when I start talking because the voice doesn't match the person It's great when bartering for goods and telling naughty Tuk Tuk drivers off.

She doesn't buy you birthday presents and so, on the advice of more than a few bitter men you decide to dump her clothes in the parking lot. And people say the Thais are amazing.
Exactly... That is pretty harsh!
Besides, it sounds like he has more to lose out of this than just the lack of Birthday attention. If the assets are in her name... that exit strategy won't fit

Hi Sametbeachboy,
I think she's Using you, sorry.
If you're asking if Thai people usually exchange gifts and make a fuss about Birthdays and New Years... Yes we do. If she's not making you feel adored and loved then I presume it's because she doesn't adore you.

Where did the OP go?...

What's apparent to me, is that people don't tend to take their personal guns to ranges and practice, if they did then the woman wouldn't have looked so shocked. My comment related to another member that posted about the pricing if you take your own weapon.
I just found it amusing because my BF couldn't communicate properly with her, I never asked her because I have no intention of owning a weapon and taking it to practice.
It doesn't really matter what you believe. You're reacting very strangely and being very rude because you're sitting at a computer and not in front of me. I don't come on these forums to put people down and insult them.

Sorry I meant the range down the road from Chalong Circle.
Yeah I thought that it would give off the wrong idea after I posted it. No I don't keep a gun and wouldn't like too. Like I said, my BF gets worried for me when he's away... I think I proved how idiotic I'd be with one at the shooting range when I couldn't even hit the target.
-
Haha, my English BF scared the sales lady in the Rawai shooting range sh**less when he asked if he could bring his own gun!!
He meant to ask for me, if I could come and practice with my own gun (BF is paranoid about the crime here and wants me to protect myself when I'm alone in the house. I'm English/Thai).
It's expensive in Rawai and seems to be that standard rate across the island (10 bullets 1000 baht) I haven't seen any promotions but that might be because its High Season.

Ok... So lets flip this question over for a second...
Do Men here on TV (just as a small sample) regardless of culture, ever lie to their Mothers.... and when/if you do... How comfortable would you be if your new GF didn't support you?
In this case we're talking about a HARMLESS lie, we don't want to know about infidelity etc etc. that's for a whole new thread. Perhaps there's a scenario where you didn't want your mum to think you were a womaniser...
Ps. aTomsLife, I think that was a lovely little story that she told her mum about how you met... it wouldn't take much effort to keep Mom happy. The new GF may love you more for supporting her rather then becoming confrontational. Lies fade when the trust kicks in, you can't expect it up front when the relationship is still young.

Honestly, I'm going to try out a few of these tricks and report back.
Happy 2013 everyone. Lets have even better luck next year. X

Class of Service: economy
Route: London Heathrow - Doha - Kuala Lumpar - Phuket
Aircraft Type: airbus A340-600
Seat Configuration 2/4/2

In-flight Entertainment: excellent, touch screen tv
In-flight Cabin Service (good or bad?): very good service. Cabin temperature a bit too cold at times
Seat Comfort: economy, good leg room, very comfortable
Food Quality: decent, lots of free alcohol, plenty of refreshments offered regularly
On Time Performance: not so good
Comments: Very comfortable seating and excellent service. Unfortunately, the flight London to Phuket is advertised as 1 stop off but it's actually 2 because they don't count Kuala Lumpar as you don't actually get off of the plane (you just sit there for 2 hours instead). Lots of disgruntled customers voiced there annoyance so we didn't have to.
During the inbound flight, the pilot flew us into a massive back cloud and the aircraft was bolted to sh*t by lightening. Scary decision! It's ok if you don't work in aviation and can't calculate the risks; we could.
I would not recommend Qatar for the London -Phuket journey as there are too many take offs and landings for the price tag. Long delays both times when stopping in Kuala Lumpar.
I would try Qatar for a different journey though. Qatar seating, in-flight entertainment and service exceeds the Thai Airways, Air France and Royal Jordanian experiences.

Hmmm... A story explained to you by a Mother... and describing the moral ground of her prized possession. You shouldn't think too much into it.
I've told my Mother a few 'white lies' it just simplifies life. It doesn't make a woman Bad or Untrustworthy. How can anyone generalise someone's morality based on how transparent the woman is with giving info to her Mother.
This isn't a Thai thing, it's just a trust thing. And what does it matter if your GF is embarrassed to tell her mum you met on-line? Maybe she's saving your face because her mum dislikes this style of introduction. Just sayin.

Hiya vulcan903, i think the GF is talking about skin bleaching surgery. It's popular in loads of countries... US, Brazil, Israel etc etc. just look at the Jackson family for an obvious example.
Your GF is fed a lot of BS about beauty through friends and media so it's probably very deeply rooted in her head now. If its a surgery she's adamant to have you'd be better off researching good quality surgeries and aftercare with her so that she doesn't end up sick.
Sorry I almost forgot to leave you a link:

by the way, this little incident or the one where some kid drove his motorbike into the side of me a couple of months ago doesn't put me off phuket at all. i think its a great place to live but thanks for the advice I Like Thai: 'It was all your own fault.
You should be thankful that you weren't shot, you would have deserved it.
Stop complaining and go back to where you come from if you don't like it'
its to avoid people like you that i like living here
I still like the place as well, despite what some members on TV may think. That said, out of curiosity, how many times would you have to be held up at gun point before you say enough is enough and seriously consider leaving Phuket?
and go where? somewhere where that never happens, like say Antarctica?
'ILikeThai' seemed only to be predicting what some people on TV might say to you... His/her writing isn't very clear, I had to read it 3 times before I could understand it. I support anyone that speaks up about an incident, especially when its to inform their community. Power in numbers! If people want to start taking the bike out at 5 am instead of 6am then the petty criminals are going to have to start operating in shorter hours.

These are all good things to consider, thanks for the input guys.
Yes I'm certain in ths case that they were Mosquitos because they were flying around me like mad. The BF and I swatted most of them. The workout was from 4pm to 6:30pm so the sun had been coming down and it was well shaded in the camp anyway.
I spent a lot of time travelling between BKK, Isaan and Chiang Mai but the Mosquitos up there were never able to bite through my clothing. That's why I was wondering if they are a different type in the South.
Twinpin, I spent time in Gambia were the mosquitos are much larger but again they could never get through my clothing.
Ok, Deet creams & vinegar baths are the way forward... Marvellous. Any particular type; Rice Wine Vinegar or good old Malt Vinegar?
One thing i find good is the jar of camphor balm they at times use for the massage. Many Thai believe this cures everything, for prevention, sure the mozzie would not like that smell at all and if you use it on the effected area might give some relief also.
I have used this for different things and very suprised it is actually very good for many things.
The lime green color one seems to be best
Haha yeah there are two types... A hot one and a mild one. My blind Thai Grandma gave me the wrong one once... The hot one stings like hell!!

ps. The bites are healed up now and they didn't ooze. Gawd mrsa on the floor mats??..I'll layer up on the gym trousers.

I find the bum bites happen when I use the toilet. I hate bum bites. I squirt a little repellent in the bowl before I sit.
Haha they are the worst... I spray the entire room/cubicle! I love it when they are fluttering about and then suddenly drop down dead!
-
Haha, I use other forums but they're not as informal.
I get bitten during the workout and afterwards. Sweating definitely helped them locate the food source. It's probably the Thai diet that's made my arse more popular than my ankles these days.
theblether, what did you use on your legs after the 42 strong attack?
-
Hey, does anybody else have the same crazy reaction to Mosquito bites as me and how are you dealing with it? In other words, how can you help me deal with this?
For example... I've immersed myself in the repellant sprays... Over dosed on antihistamine tablets... Eaten fresh garlic, fried garlic and garlic tablets... but I still get bitten to bits.
I finished a Muay Thai class in the gym recently and found 5 bites on one bum cheek and another 4 bites on the other bum cheek. They swell up and itch for days and days. I'm at my wits end!
I wear long jeans and shirts most of the time, especially in the evenings but they bite through my bloody jeans!! They are super evil in the South.
Your advice would be appreciated

I would think you'd have more of a chance of getting something done about stopping this if you went to the newspapers, rather than the police.
A few incidences like this broadcast to the media and possibly picked up by the ambassadors in Bangkok might have some long lasting positive effect.
Anyway, glad you're OK and they didn't hurt you.
Newspapers will not generally run something that hasn't been reported to the police. The ambassadors and wardens can then present the news reports to police when they have their regular meetings with them adnask what they are doing about it. It does make a difference.
Agree!! Why should we let petty criminals have free reign. The police won't take it seriously if the victims and their community won't.
-
So attempted robbery at gun point is now considered a non-incident?? Hmm, there goes my faith in my community. I suppose that if I spot this happening to you when I drive past you in my truck, I'll just give you a friendly wave because Steves is only getting robbed at gunpoint again...
