  1. These changes in practices are long overdue. Thailand actually has a labor shortage and has only been able to keep costs down using foreign workers. This is not sustainable and it makes more sense to improve production efficiency. Undoubtedly there will be some disruptions as inefficient low cost production moves to other countries but I question their value to the Thai economy.

  2. "Article 309 endorsed all actions of the 2006 coup regime".. ^^...The operative phrase here being "The Coup regime"..........any other questions?

But for the PTP, there is a silver lining to this cloud. With the Democrat Party linking itself so closely to defending this "coup regime", certainly positions them accordingly. I'm sure this is not lost on the majority electorate.

Just solidifies the notion, if it needs solidification, that throughout all this political to-and-fro, following the bouncing ball, always suggests that it is the Democrats who are the principle benficiaries of coups. Is it any wonder therefore, they are defending 309 tooth and nail, and trying the Thaksin change-of-conversation trick behind which to hide their true motives....not to me it isn't.

Exactly. My first thought was to wonder why they would make it so obvious that they benefitted from the coup. However, I believe the real purpose is to serve notice to the Army that they have a dog in this fight and maybe get them to break their truce with PT.

  3. Thoughtful commentators point out that yes, the gun laws in the US do need tightening but that will not solve the problem. Other contributing factors are a lack of adequate mental health care as well as movies and games that offer gratuitous violence. In reality, if you were to objectively rank the causes, mental health would be number one, movies, games and a general increased acceptance of the horrible would be number 2 and choice of weapons would be number three. However, simplifying the argument to only guns is politically easier and allows the left to continue to portray the right as inhuman, unfeeling baby killers (oh wait, it's the left that thinks it's okay to kill babies, but they call it empowering women so that makes it okay).

In the wake of tragedies like Sandy Hook, the appropriate response is deep sorrow, hugging your own children that much tighter and encouraging thoughtful dialog. Neither the NRA response nor the cries for banning guns from the left fall into the category of thoughtful or appropriate.

  4. My Thai daughter is hyperactive - but not a problem. We laugh and play together - she's smart - she learns quickly - her mom has taught her to be super respectful …….

Ya, sure she talks a lot but her imagination is incredible. She dances and sings. Maybe she is a "stand out" for hyperactivity - I don't know for sure.

What I do believe is that when some behaviour is given a name - like ADHD or ADD or whatever, one can then "own" it and say "I'm like this because I'm ADD or ADHD". Then, it becomes how they identify in life and, in some cases they feel like there's something wrong with them.

Please don't jump to labelling these kids "hyped up brats" or suggest that "They'll grow out of it in their late teens and become lazy SOBs". Play with them, enjoy them, teach them, love them. You may have been a kid once yourself.

Amen to that. Too many people are hung on labels and think that labeling behavior defines the person and the problem. Everyone is an individual and needs to be treated as such. On the other hand, if we know that 25% of the ADHD kids will become arrogant then we can know where the next crop of politicians is coming from.
  5. Mixed feelings about this. On the one hand any statement from a Thai official should be taken with mountains of salt. On the other hand, I think the wage hike can be a good thing as it will help wake employers up to the fact that Thailand cannot be relied on as a low cost labor market. In fact, the low wage jobs tend to be filled by people from surrounding countries. There is in reality a labor shortage here and if this wage hike forces the issue to make companies more productive then it could be a good thing. However, I suspect that some of the companies will respond either by going off the grid or moving to other countries.

  6. I have traveled over most of the world for a number of years and I have concluded that the relationship between men and women is exactly the same in all countries and cultures. The only thing that differs is the degree to which the men have figured this out. By that measure Thailand is fairly advanced. Even though men predominate at the positions of power, everyone knows that it is the women who are really running the show.

  7. If the AEC truly comes into effect with free flow of people and services Thailand will be in real trouble. Better educated people from other countries will come here and relegate the standard undereducated Thais to working in Thai firms that don't care about English. Unfortunately, those firms will be a vanishing breed in the face of competition from other countries. The situation with the highly educated Thais will not change much. Those who feel compelled to stay here will still do so and do well. Those who want to go abroad will still do so and do well. Unfortunately, many of these highly talented people, at least the ones that I know, want to go abroad.

The "good" news is that AEC will not happen as planned. There is no mechanism to force countries to comply and the ASEAN 3 monkeys policy means that things will just keep on as they are.

  8. I'd be happy if they could process passengers in the 45 seconds they say they take now. Getting down to 20 seconds is a dream. WHile things have improved slightly recently in the past I have had to wait almost two hours for entrance immigration. Exit immigration remains a disgrace with long waits for a process that should be simple. I went through recently and it took a half hour while half the stations were unmanned (or unwomanned). There is no excuse for that. In Singapore it is rare to even have one person ahead of you in exit immigration.

  9. IMHO motorcades are one of the few things the Thai police are good at (they are also pretty good at solving the cases they want to solve but there are too few of those). I suppose you could argue that there are too many motorcades, especially for some of the yellow cars, but in general they seem pretty professional about it. I get caught in traffic stoppages on the elevated motorway firly regularly but usually it is only for a few minutes and traffic flows nicely when it is done.

  10. As someone who has spent the past few years in the area of food science and information I find it distressing to see this type of crap being spread in Thailand. If people are really concerned about blood sugar levels they will stop eating white rice. It turns out that blood sugar levels after eating a gram of white rice are just about the same as blood sugar levels after eating a gram of sugar. Check out the Glycemic Index for more information.

This is just another way for people who distrust corporations (and who doesn't?) to blame them for what are really behavioral issues and a decline in physical activity. There is one whacko in the US named Barry Popkin who started the whole sugar tax crusade and who blames Coca Cola for the global obesity epidemic. He doesn't talk about the other side, which is that if you tax sugar and people consume diet colas then there is another school of thought that says diet drinks do not satisfy hunger like sugared drinks do and lead to overeating.

One thing I have learned after years of media monitoring is that any food you can name has somebody who will tell you that it is bad for you. The best advice is to ignore the hype, eat a balanced diet (including snacks in moderation) and get plenty of exercise. If you are overweight, eat less and exercise more, repeat as needed.

Note, I do not and never have worked for the soft drink industry. I am just interested in good science and unhappy with the food nannies who think they know best but usually don't.
