  1. We have been living in Pattaya for over 6 years. We eat out about once a week, but most days we cook at home. On our menu: pasta dishes, steaks, burgers, Mexican foods, pizzas, quiche, salads, fresh fruit juices, and Thai foods. I took thai cooking classes and my partner thinks my Thai dishes are better than anything you can go out and buy... :-). Really, as we are not trying to make a profit on it, so we use the best meat and ingredients.

    I'm feeling hungry now.

  2. So what they are after is 1. People not carrying their passports 2. People who have bought prescription drugs like Viagra, Cialis, Xiemed , Xanax and Valium.

So they let vendors sell these drugs in order to extort the people that buy them?

  3. The problem here with the OP's account is the following:

There are real Thai police, and then there are guys dressed like and posing as Thai police who are IMPOSTERS....

There have been many reports of FAKE police accosting passengers coming out of Ekamai for whatever reasons....

The difficulty for the average farang is trying to distinguish between the real police, who do have a legal right to search you for drugs on demand, and the fake police who probably are trying to extort money.

Uniforms and badges are cheaply and easily had here by any criminal minded Thais...

I guess one way to deal with that kind of situation is to look for an official Thai police car or motorcycle. I wouldn't want to go anywhere with those types. But maybe others here have some better suggestions for sorting out the professional criminals from the amateur ones... whistling.gif

That's an excellent point. I use the bus station a lot and I often have to wait for my girlfriend to arrive, the real police have a small area just in front of where the buses pull in, and if they're stopping people it's always right off the bus. I would be very suspicious of anyone stopping people further away, although there is a legitimate police booth by the 7-11.

Agreed. I was stopped as soon as i got off the bus and my bag was searched there and then. Nothing was found and the police waved me on. No problems.

  4. This happens all the time at ekkamai bus station. It happened to me and a number of other people here. Although it is an intimidating experience, I don't think the cops are looking to plant anything in people's bags. They are just probably checking for security reasons or for drugs.

  5. Yesterday I was having a coffee in True coffee shop. A thai man walks in, helps himself to an empty seat and starts talking on the dog and bone. Today I was in McDonald's having some French fries. Two thai people came in, sat down and had a business meeting. On both occasions, these so called customers didn't buy any food or beverages. They just came in and used the comfy seating. Furthermore, none of the staff moved them on because they weren't actually paying customers. Is this normal?

  6. This is an interesting thread as i can kind of relate to it. I have been living in Bangkok for 8 years and am now 37, next month I am moving back to England. I have been procrastinating the move for a few years now, but have finally decided to bite the bullet. Reasons for going? I am single, have no assets, am a million miles away from being financially stable, my mom is getting on, and I am worried about my future. Obviously going back in the current economic climate isn't a great idea, but the longer i leave it, the harder it's going to be to get back into the job market. I have had a great time here, but it's time to move on.

  7. iPads suck in terms of movie files. Actually the only movie file iPads play are mp4. Some free apps (mediaplayer or oplayer) will convert all video formats but you have to install them on your computer in your iTunes library. From there you convert on your computer and then sync/ transfer over to the ipad,,,,,a bit of a hassle. Androids are much better because they support almost all formats.

  8. Yeah. Ekkamai bus station seems to be a favourite place. When they stopped me there they were intent on rummaging through my backpack. However, when they saw my passport and realised i was British, they were far more interested in talking about football than my bag lol
