  1. A little extra to add before I switch off and go to 'AOD' - we have a very friendly tuk-tuk driver that lives down the Soi who could organise any tuk-tuks needed but we could pick up some people and transport them to AOD if we can organise it in advance - I can get my step-sons to do a few runs here and there if we know who is where and when.

The younger step-son and my son are not big drinkers and could be talked into dropping people off afterwards (if you promise NOT to puke in my car!!) so whichever you prefer us Ubon people can take care - be it a tuk-tuk or car, we'll get you back to your hotel/mansion/short time motel or cardboard box under the 'friendship' bridge!

  2. It is a declining market I'm afraid to say - the tractor started taking over about 15 years ago and the villagers sold the oxen! My father-in-law at the time went from 6 to none in 6 months and the family have never bought another one.

There is a fortune to be made if you have the time and space to buy and breed oxen to sell to the villagers when the crash comes and oil prices put the tractors out of business. You will have to wait 5 years before recovering any venture capital though.

  3. @ Marco and everyone reading really.

I am going to the big one near to BigC tonight (Wednesday) and will take some pics of the place to post.

There is no problems with numbers because the place will seat about 300 people and I will confirm that there is live music every night, we can sit at the back if we need to talk! - I will also take pics of the Soi from Chiangkul road so there should be no problem finding the place.

The beer servers are in fairly skimpy get-up but nothing the wives will tut at. Draught or bottled Singha and Chang (cold if you drink it quick - it's getting hot here!) and most beers cold bottled.

There's a 'short time' motel about 5 mins walk from the restaraunt that will do any overnighters but I'm not sure of the rate for the night - I can check if anybody needs me to, lots of mansions close-by that do overnight for B400 - 500.

The name of the place is 'AOD'.

  4. Marco has just told me that there is no McDonald in Ubon and on thinking about it the lack of the HUGE M at Robinsons would mean that the outlet there will be a KFC one but they do serve burgers there.

The donut place you used is on the corner of the building ChiefBEM - go around that corner and you'll find the KFC (I'll have to have a look tomorrow!) and if you look over your shoulder as you enter it you will see Swensons across the parking lot and Pizza company outlet just behind Swensons - you can't miss any of them!

  5. Is this Ubon or Udon? In Ubon Marco is on the ball but you can get the standard Mc Donalds crap at Robinsons on Chaiangkul road but for a real tasty burger go to where Marco told you!

No Idea about Udon - been 20 years since I've been there.

    Thaibites,

We will be in Ubon for the New Years (2007)

    Exactly what does Robinsons serve?

Do they really add vegie meal to their hamburgers?

    Is it ran by Farangs?

    :o

It's a standard McDonalds franchise at Robinsons department store and serves the usual cardboard crap you get in any overseas McDonalds. It is run by Thai's and if you are into eating fast food it will suit your needs.

There are also KFC outlets dotted around as well as MK suki yaki places.

Robinsons is easy to find - it's a large department store on the main road through Ubon about 1K from the bridge over the river. Robinsons used to be a family owned store called 'Ying Yong' and they had a large food market on the ground floor but closed it down a few years ago. Franchises at or next to Robinsons are McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Swensons and The Pizza Company, all Thai owned and run.

  6. I'm in for the 24th Marco - myself and the wife.

Don't want to change your plans but have you thought about the Korean Beef place next to BigC?

Easy to find and the best I know at the moment with draught Chang and Singha (cold!) live music and very big - late in February means the Thai's will have run out of money for the month so it should be fairly quiet!

    I will phone you tomorrow.

  7. Is this Ubon or Udon? In Ubon Marco is on the ball but you can get the standard Mc Donalds crap at Robinsons on Chaiangkul road but for a real tasty burger go to where Marco told you!

No Idea about Udon - been 20 years since I've been there.

  8. The 'I wouldn't get out of bed for less than B70,000' and 'they rip us off so we can do the same' posts just show you the mentality of the firmly entrenched Falangs that never travel outside the known falang area's.

A Thai teacher teaching English in Ubon with a couple of years experience would be getting about B8,000 and if they are lucky enough to be working at a government school they will get an annual increase - after 30+ years they may be on B32,000 which is a real fortune here.

Is all of Thailand a crime hotspot? I've been here over 25 years in Ubon and have never been burgled or accosted in the street, I have never been mugged and have never had my car aerial snapped off by vandals - is it safe to live here? A hel_l of a lot safer than most places I've been.

Travel from anywhere to anywhere in the city limits will cost you B5 and a filling and tasty meal at lunch time will cost you B30 so the information in the post is correct. An evening meal will cost you B50 or B2000 depending on where you want to eat.

Is B25,000 a pittance? Go home and earn $4000 then.

  9. A quick one for Jay - I asked my son and he said it's just a USB connection from his mobile and it cost him B35 in a local shop - he uses a 1222 dial up too and although it is slow and does get difficult to connect to sometimes as Lampard said it does work most of the time.

The choice becomes yours - a years sign up or a throw away card that is slower - how much net time will you need? ADSL is fast but binds you and monthly cards are cheap but slow.

I am on a 1222 A-net monthly unlimited card and must admit that I very rarely get better than 3kbps but never normally have a problem connecting - if you need to send large files to your office this would not be a good way of doing it but if it's just emails and general net surfing you will not find better for your situation.

  10. Sorry bergen - a slight mistake on my part, the temple is in Cambodia! Pretty close to you as well!

Day 3 : Khong Jiam - Ubon Rachathani

After breakfast, drive with your guide to Khao Phra Viharn. Khao Phra Viharn Khmer temple complex was started even before Angkor Wat in the heart of Cambodia! Unlike other Khmer Temples, this one has not undergone the restoration efforts of the Fine Arts Department. If Indiana Jones were real, he would have found this place! Walk up steps to graded causeways through awesome "gopuras" and arrive at the extensive but dilapidated center, which is on a cliff-top overlooking the virgin Cambodian countryside. On the way back, stop off for a look at Maw-I-Daeng cliff carvings. These carvings exhibit many similarities to some of the Hindu subject matter at Khao Phra Viharn, but experts disagree exactly which site preceded the other.

Have lunch at a local restaurant, then continue the drive back to Ubon Ratchathani. Visit a number of city sites in Ubon including Wat Thung Sri Muang, built in a very unusual mixture of Thai, Lao & Burmese styles. Also see the National Museum (unless the day is a Tuesday, when the museum is closed). The exhibits here help to put what you have seen over the last days into perspective. This museum is also home to 3 of the most important known inscription stones in Thai history. Your guide will have much local knowledge, so if last minute shopping does not interest you, he/she can take to see a few more cultural attractions before driving to your hotel for overnight and dinner.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Accommodation: Lai Thong Hotel

Featured Attractions: Khao Phra Viharn Khmer Temple Complex, Maw-I-Daeng Cliff Carvings, Wat Thung Sri Muang, National Museum

It's a 2-3 hour drive from Ubon and there is some walking required to get to the Temple itself but the views are breathtaking!

The day came from a google search and was part of this tour that included the cave paintings -

    http://www.north-by-north-east.com/ISAN/details_ISN007.asp

I hasten to add that I am not part of the company and this was just a google search!

  11. Thaibites

I'll try one of those dial up cards when i'm there. At that price you can't complain. Thanks.

    Jay

I've got a Moto V3 phone can you just put the sim card in the phone and connect to your laptop. Is that how it works?

Not sure how it works Jay - I have 2 phone lines and I'm hooked up to one of them with the puter.

My son runs his laptop on his mobile phone so it's only a matter of asking him!

  12. will be in UBON next sunday on a airasia-99-Baht-flight for 2 nights to "wipe out" the last white dot on my personal Thai map... anything interesting to do there ? or any nice people to meet for a drink or some food ?

Lot's of interesting things to do, sites to see and places to go, 2 nights in Ubon but are you on the morning flight in and evening flight out? A trip on your free day to see the cave paintings or a visit to the Temple in Laos (no visa needed) and the now famous Korean beef back in Ubon in the Evening? It just needs booking, depending on how you want to do it - a group tour or private car for the sightseeing (a fish or chicken feast at Sirindorn dam is always a treat!) and there will be 'nur yang korlee' within 100m of where your staying if your in Ubon city.

A pic of 'Korean Beef' at home!

    post-16800-1137506061_thumb.jpg

  13. Hey Lads

Where is this Korean food that you keep reffering to. Is it close to the town centre because I would like to take my wife there for a meal when we arrive. Is the food any good or just the beef?

    Jay

It is now everywhere in Ubon Jay - they open and close or change hands all the time. There are some very good ones and some awful ones but when you get here next month give me a shout and I'll tell you where the best ones are! It is only Korean beef style but that means Beef, pork, squid, liver, and all the greens you can eat in a soup stock - you BBQ it yourself at the table.

For your internet access it would be best if you bought a monthly dial-up card - lots of companies selling them and it's better than signing a contract for a year, unlimited access with free phone hook up with A-net will cost you B329 for the month and if you leave half way through the month you lose a couple of quid - big deal!

  14. Go to www.ebolamonkeyman.com for the best negro bothering anti-scams on the net.

Let's put our heads together! How can we alert the men in brown to the threat that Africans pose to Thailand??

Am I the only person following to notice that what started out as an attempt to entrap a single Nigerian con-man soon devolved into the above racist rant? It would seem that if the other posters were uncomfortable with Griffin's shameless klantalk they would have surely expressed it. Instead, as far as I can see, he is readily accepted as one of the gang (klan). Is he just saying what everyone else here thinks? Do you all percieve Africans as posing a threat and is the aim here to bother the negro?

Might be a good idea if you visited the link and see what TSB has to say on the matter! You will find a lot of posts that are VERY anti scammer and not a one that is anti Nigerian. The fact that Mr Okofar is a Nigerian SCAMMER is the reason he is under attack - if you did actually visit the site (I know it's such a pain to click a link but do try) you would be able to chat with Nigerian scambaiters - they dislike the scammers as much as anyone.

Not sure how you make a single post into a racist rant but if that's what makes you happy please do feel affronted.

  15. We now have another bank account! Because the people at TSB (see the link) are offering more than the scammer can accept into his savings account (how many charities use just a savings account?) he has had to send current account details (I won't post the details here because they will be deleted) and we now have a Thai involved in the scam that we can nail - maybe a dupe and maybe in on the scam but either way it's hard evidence for the boys in brown!

The bait is still going on and there are pics to be seen and all details for this scammer are here -

    http://thescambaiter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5639

  16. Let's put our heads together!  How can we alert the men in brown to the threat that Africans pose to Thailand??  It seems e-mailing them is a waste of time.  What about the sub offices??

Didn't Khunt Thaksin have a post box for stopping crime??  Maybe a few  FWD emails from darkest Africa would help.

This scammer is not in Africa - he is a Nigerian in Bangkok and could be using the internet cafe nearest to you!

How do we get the boys in brown involved? Good question there, I've given the info to the bank and local police here in Ubon but knowing how things work here I'm not holding out any hopes. My email to the bank got a reply that is posted on this thread and I have had no answers to the many mails I've sent to other places.

  17. And now a pic of the contractor doing the 'biulding' in the Tsunami affected area's - looks a lot like BKK to me but who can tell.

A click on the link will show you why Mr Ying does not exist and Prince xxxxxxx xxxxxx needs you to send him large amounts of money!

  18. What makes you so sure he is yet another African crook?

Well the name on the bank account was a bit of a clue!

We now have his account details, a real address in BKK, 2 mobile phone numbers, a name of a Thai girlfriend/dupe to receive Western union or Moneygram payments and A REAL PICTURE of Mr Tosak Ying ( looks nothing like the first one he sent though!) holding a sign saying 'property of TSB' - you need to read the link to see the significance of that.

He paid somebody to pose with the sign - couldn.t do it himself because he's nigerian and is inspecting the sites in all Tsunami affected area's!

  19. I will go with nickerelastic and donate gmail addy's to anyone that wants to bait this scumbag.

Gmail addy's are untraceable to the scammers as they do not list the ISP on the headers, I use Gmail to bait scammers all the time - if you want one just PM me with an email addy to send an invite to.

  20. Lot's of chances bret - maybe not a cobra because they are very rare but if you go into any hospital outside Bangkok you'll see a poster on the wall showing the varieties of snakes that are native to Thailand.

A simple google search will show you which ones are there. My late father in law was very quick to get me away from the bamboo thicket because it was home to a really nasty one!

Snakes here are more the run away type and you need to corner them or annoy them in some way before they bite but they are around and even in the cities you will find them.

It does depend on where you go for your camping and fishing -maybe this link will help -

    http://www.siam-info.de/english/snakes_poisonous.html

  21. Mr Ying and his 'biulding' company are spending B1m on every house they are building for the Tsunami victims so he really does need YOUR help to build these palaces.

We now have a real address for the scammer and another phone number (landline) to the girlfriend/helper/dupe so is anybody in BKK ready to help?

Thanks to the member that PM'd whilst back home in USA with info but we need somebody in BKK right now and we can nail this piece of human filth.

  22. There is no Mr Ying Patsycat, just a Nigerian scammer sitting in an internet cafe and hopefully having a hard time finding his real victims amongst the scambaiters.

Got a reply from the bank this morning -

''According to your mail, we are pleased to provide the information as you

    requested.

Referring to your e-mail, we would like to ask you please kindly inform the

    police to take legal process.

Wish you would be appreciated to our services.

For more information please contact KContact Center Tel. 02888 8800 or

    e-mail : [email protected]''

One of my mails to the Royal Thai Police website bounced because the box is full and no replies from anywhere else.

Still, at least we're giving the guy a hard time for his dirty money.

Noboby based in BKK willing to pop the original scam into a real police station there? I would forward the scam and his answers to you and I am sure the police would do something.

  23. Why Nigerian? Sounds like a Thai scammer to me. If its a scam, which it probably is.

Anyways, sure the Thai police have an e-mail address somewhere. Why not just forward it?

The name on the bank account was pure Nigerian. It is very easy to open an email addy with any name you want but opening a bank account here in Thailand is a little harder! Try the link I put up to get to the best scambaiting site you'll ever find.

Read this thread to see that reports have been sent to the Thai police and the Thai farmers bank.

The scammer is a little busy at the moment because he is printing off a 2403 question form sent by a baiter on the link I posted - it would get the scammer $50,000 if he manages to fill it in right!

    The link again -
