  1. The model that he is flying looks like he would be using something else for propulsion and lift, as the rotor seems to be almost stationary at times..... or is that just a optical filming illusion>

Strobe effect due to the camera shutter speed matching a multiple of the rotation speed of the blades causing the appearance of stopping.

OH ! ok how about the upside down part

Using a collective pitch (CP) helicopter. The pitch of the blades, that is the angle, and a different shape for aerobatic work are adjustable so you can change which direction the lift works. In his case it may just be the blade shape and design with symmetric top and bottom.

    Tywais,
You do know what you are talking about!
The booms I use, 0.5mm thick alu square tube, come from a shop where mosquitodoors, -windows etc. are being made.
You can make both centerplates to hold the booms together out of plywood. Light, strong and easy to make. Spray them with some nice colour and the neighbours will be impressed even more!
I mostly use kits but replace the booms with these alu ones amongst other modifications.

For all those would be helicopter pilots here is a note of warning.

    Man scalped by remote-controlled helicopter

A teenager has died after being struck in the head by a remote-controlled helicopter he was flying in a city park in the US.

Roman Pirozek, 19, suffered the fatal head injury at Calvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Witnesses told police the helicopter Mr Pirozek was flying crashed into him, cutting off part of the top of his head and slashing his throat. He died at the scene.

Mr Pirozek’s father, who introduced his son to the hobby, is believed to have witnessed the tragedy.

Mr Pirozek was vice-president of a local hobby club and appeared to have been an avid enthusiast of the remote-controlled miniature helicopters.

Videos posted by Pirozek on YouTube and photos on his Facebook page show him working on the machines and flying them.

One clip shows him performing tricks with his Trex 700 helicopter. The video culminates with him dropping the $1500 model from the sky and restarting the rotor when it was just centimetres from his head.

RIP for sure, but he was playing with fire.

This sure is a horrible and bizarre incident.
Laying on a bed in a bunker with walls and ceiling made of 3 meter thick reinforced concrete may be relatively safe but probably you will soon suffer with other more mental problems.
You can subsitute RC helicopter pilot with
    Passenger/pilot on a helicopter/fixed wing plane/boat
And to keep it closer to our daily life:
How about being a passenger in a minivan in TH?
How about driver/passenger in a car/motorbike/bicycle in Chiang Mai?
How about walking on the sidewalk?

And how about travelling by train in TH?

Sorry if you have already answered this, rcpilot, by what would it take to extend the length of the video- batteries to fly the 'copter, SD card size, etc ..

Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

My camera is limited to a recording time of 30 minutes. Then it stops. seems to be some legal thing in some global regions.
SD cards, with their large capacity, don't give any practical limitation any longer.
The batteries I use to power my copters give me a flight time of appr. 7 minutes.
Landing, swapping batteries and lift-off gives me another 7 minutes.

  2. great stuff

loved the little girls running for their life smile.png

that will give them something to remember / tell their friends smile.png

are these drones something like you use but bigger ?

    dave2

Basically they are all the same, propellors facing up (or down) and no wing at all.

The ones in your picture can not lift very much (I am afraid). Some years ago a German guy flew one while he was sitting on it.

So you can buy/make them any size.

And any number of motors between 3 and 8 as well as any size of motors, depending on the payload you need (camera (GoPro/compact/DSLR), gimbal, batteries, telemetry-radio, video downlink radio, etc. It all adds up.

Mine are some 60-70cm total width. Easy to transport in the car.

  3. I've posted this link before but it's worth repeating. There's huge amounts of advice and knowledge available here

    http://www.rcgroups.com/aircraft-electric-multirotors-790/

    Hi guys,

It is all getting a bit technical now...

Some asked me what hardware I am using.

Well, I just buy the components and build the copters up myself.

Works better for me and gives me more freedom.

    HobbyKing is my main supplier.

Do not forget that hardware is just something you need.

More important is building up experience flying the copter. And common sense.

So I would say, start with something really cheap.

Crashes are great teachers. Start practicing in open empty fields. The higher the grass, the better.

And common sense means NOT flying above people, cars, etc.

When I produced the footage at Thanon Wua Lai I had an open space of just 2 by 2 meter between some food stalls for lift-off and landing and during the flight, my copter was mainly above the water in the moat.

Not an ideal situation but in case of a possible malfunction, a crash on a car or much worse, on a person, is an absolute disaster.

So again to the guys who want to start flying a multicopter, my advice is start with something cheap and take your time.

  4. Ever since I saw the multi-copter videos I really want one. The cheapest I've seen is $595.00 USD and I don't think that came with the RC controller. I've seen controllers that can operate from an Android phone or tablet. Always enjoy <envy> your videos.

BTW - what is the flight time on one battery charge? I assume that is a Hero GoPro camera being used?

Not sure, but I think the copters controlled by a phone or tablet have their limitations. The connection seems to be by WiFi, so quite a limited range. I do use (amongst other equipment) a tablet but I have a radio hooked up to the tablet. Gives my the realtime flightdata and I can give commands to the copter in mid air.

The batteries I use give me a flighttime of some 7 minutes. Of course I do have more sets of batteries.

    I had a GoPro. Gone...

Now I am using a Pana LX7 for the videos and mostly a modified (other firmware in it) Canon G11 for the stills.

  5. Thanks to all for your reactions and likes, especially dru2 for your info about the history of the area and the silversmiths, very interesting.
Soon I will publish another one I shot at Wat Jet Yot (if the mods allow me).

And I will publish an accompanying piece on Wat Jet Yod if and when you do. Must take a lot of skill to handle a video on a multicopter... impressive. Thank you! I have been writing and researching on places like this for years, without ever seeing them from the air.

    Interesting dru2, I pm'ed you.

In a minute I will publish the one I shot at Wat Jet Yot.

  6. Thanks to all for your reactions and likes, especially dru2 for your info about the history of the area and the silversmiths, very interesting.

    To samsara and haybilly.

About the setup, I don't know exactly but I would say around 50000 thb.

The point is that there also is a learning curve. I lost one here and another one there, including a multicopter deciding to start a new life as a submarine, taking a quite expensive camera with it down into the deep as well. That is what makes it a bit more expensive.

Soon I will publish another one I shot at Wat Jet Yot (if the mods allow me).

  7. As a great lover of HARING I want to share this with all Dutch and Belgians, living in Chiang Mai:

Yes, HARING HARING HARING (For non Dutch/Belgians: herring).
At Dutch Jan's Sunshine bar upcoming Tuesday (May 7), Soi 2, Moon Muang, starting around 6 pm.
Sold at cost, so a non-commercial event. See it as a bit late tribute to our new (by then 1 week old) king!

    haring3.jpg
And for all non-Dutch/Belgians living in Chiang Mai, this is how you eat herring:

Oh, what to do untill Tuesday May 9th...

  8. After publishing some footage of the newly build Central Festival and the Promenada, my plan is to publish some more random footage of Chiang Mai. Today a short impression of a resort in Mae Rim. Next time I am thinking of Wat Jet Yot but it can be anything what comes on my path. But wait, how about you, as the TV CNX community, telling me what object you want to see from the perspective of a flying bird. No quarantees, no fixed time schedule, but I will try. So please let me know!

  10. Ok, to be on topic, Thaivisa doesn't support video attachments. Best to upload to YouTube. I've spent a bunch of time recently looking at these remotes on Youtube.

    Got your message Tywais,

So for those of you who might want to see the video, copy/paste youtu.be/GvOzDMhe8jE into your browser to see the video.

It's not perfect, it's intended to just give you an impression of how it's done.

  11. Thanks for your interest eyecatcher.

I make those "Close Aerial Views" (videos and stills) with a GoPro Hero 2 in my so called OctoCopter.

What a coincidence, I've just been looking into those, either home brew or kit. Found the kits, including the GoPro, to be surprisingly expensive. Any clubs around Chiang Mai sporting these? Sorry for going off topic, just excited to see someone with one of these.

    Just PM'd you...
