That is a common problem. And you found already a workaround, the extension.

No.
But it does with flash drives which it detects.

I have 4 Apacer flash drives, 3 different models, and it doesn't see any of them unless I put them on an extension lead.  All other brands are instantly detected and without the necessity for the extension lead.

In the original post I should have used the word 'detect' rather than 'recognize'.
I've tried to amend that in my original post and remove the atrocious spelling mistake from the title but Aseannow won't let me.

I have 2 notebook computers, a very old Lenovo and a less old NEC.

The Lenovo recognizes all flash drives without problems, including my Apacer flash drives.

The NEC one fails to recognize when any Apacer flash drive is inserted.  It recognizes all other flash drives without any problem.  However it does recognize Apacer flash drives if I attach them to an extension USB lead and insert the lead into the computer USB slot.
The problem persists whether I run Windows on the computer itself or Linux distributions from a flash drive.

This all seems very odd to me.  I'd be grateful if anyone can offer a possible explanation for the NEC item's refusal to see Apacer flash drives other than when they are attached to an extension lead.

Income Bonds are a possibility - can open by post with a Thai address - very safe - can manage by post and online - but need a UK bank account to pay in and withdraw, an offshore account with a sort code is OK.

I have no solutions but can offer some food for thought.

If the system has no major leaks and no taps open then the pump running continually would build up huge pressure which would result in water squirting out from the joints and gaskets in the pump.  If that's not happening then I suggest that the pump is not drawing or pumping water at that time.  I can only guess as to why opening and closing a tap alters that......  But that would be my first line of investigation.

You could try closing any and all outlet valves from the pump at night and see if it still happens.  If it does then the problem is the pump/bore-hole not the distribution system - and if not, vice versa.

Pressure switches can be very problematic.  I would take a look at it.  Ants and other creatures sometimes invade switches causing huge problems.  I'd take a look at it and clean it up if possible.  If you're working on the pump be sure to disconnect it from the electric supply and release all pressure in it (open a tap when the electric supply is turned off) before working on it.

EDIT: Having just re-read the OP I wonder if the pump is drawing water from a bore-hole or the mains water supply.  If the latter then low/non-existent mains supply water pressure might be something to do with it.

I am a Brit with a Thai wife and so have similar considerations to the original poster.

A matter that bothers me but as yet I haven't had the opportunity to investigate is whether or not my company pension provider will need a national insurance number and UK tax code before they will be able to make payments to my wife/widow.  I strongly suspect that they need both.  I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has experience or knowledge of the situation regarding these possible requirements.

Unfortunately the trees nearby mean they'll usually at least be tree snakes hanging around. They eat everything like mice, lizards, frogs and eggs. I just found it easier to catch them when I can and release them in the jungle down the road. There aren't many venomous snakes in Thailand and it's not common to encounter them. 

If you post a photo of the area you'll trying to snake proof I might be able to give you some more useful suggestions.

The above two replies give excellent info and advice.

We regularly encounter snakes around the house, occasionally inside too - everything from tiny little slithery things through to king cobras and pythons.  Most will leave without any trouble so long as you don't corner them or try to do them harm.  Pythons and vipers will not slither away voluntarily and can pose quite a problem.  You have to deal with them on a case by case basis.

Pet dogs are great for raising the alarm when there's a snake nearby.  We keep three.

Cats will take on many snakes, but they don't always win.....

Geese fall somewhere between cats and dogs as snake alarms and snake repellers, but they are also hostile to most humans.

Finally, although you have to be mindful of the possibility of snake encounters you don't need to be permanently on edge.  They don't want to meet you any more than you want to meet them.

The above is good advice, but my experience differs slightly.

When I first arrived in Thailand I was able to obtain a one year Thai driver licence by providing the necessary documentation and a current international driver permit (I suspect that this is no longer possible).  I was not required to do any tests other than the reaction/eyesight nonsense.

I never drove so I allowed my Thai licence to lapse.

Fourteen years later I bought a little car for the wife and so decided to renew my Thai licence in order that I could legally drive it and was insured to do so.  Because I'd allowed my licence to expire for longer than a year I was required to start from scratch - documents, videos, and tests - but when I completed everything successfully I was given a five year licence on the grounds that I was renewing the very out-of-date one year licence.

I would add that if you do this through a driving school they often have connections at the licencing office.  For a small fee you can complete the entire procedure in a couple of weeks, as opposed to several months in our area.  But the fee won't guarantee that you pass the test.

When I took my test there were eleven of us who started - three failed the theory test, six failed the driving test itself - only two of us were successful, which is amazing because it's all unbelievably easy.

I cannot answer your enquiry directly, but I live in Isaan just outside a small to medium size town a long way from Udon.  My experience is that the by and large the authorities locally and nationally and the local people are taking the situation very very seriously and are responding to it vigorously.

We have yet to hear from anyone locally who knows of even one case in the area.

I know that my contribution to this thread is all anecdotal, based on nothing more than hearsay, but nonetheless I'm comforted and encouraged by the local response to the virus.  Relatives of ours elsewhere in Isaan report similar news.

I'd much rather be here than in Europe or the USA right now.

I plan to change from extension based on retirement to one based on marriage.  I understand that one of the requirements will be an updated Kor Ror 2 registry document from my local ampur.  I am interested to know whether this will be a new document supplied by the ampur or an endorsed copy of our existing KR2.  The reason that I ask is because our old KR2 is very very dark and doesn't copy well.  I want to know in advance if this might cause a problem.

By the way, we married in Thailand but nowhere near our present location and ampur.  I assume that this will not complicate the issue.

I have had experience of helping Thais with their English in three locations - Bangkok, Petchaburi, and Isaan.  My experience has consistently been that if the potential student is not enthusiastic and is not supported in his studies by those around him then the entire exercise is a waste of time.

You wrote, "My wife has a quite big family in that area".  I would suggest asking them to find a teacher.  If they are enthusiastic they will easily be able to do so.  If they don't do so then you throwing your money at the situation will achieve nothing positive.

I don't know, but.....

...your Bangkok Bank branch might not be the office that deals with incoming international transfers.

My experiences:

Many years ago I had accounts with Kasikorn Bank at a branch in the Sukhumvit area.  I went to the branch when my transfer didn't arrive.  They rang the administrative office in Phayathai and after some discussion sent me there.  Phayathai was the office that dealt with incoming international transfers at the time.  My Sukhumvit branch was not directly involved.

The staff at Phayathai were red hot! They advised me to request the TM103 Form and take it to them.  When I took it to them they examined it for no more than a few seconds and immediately identified the problem as sender error.  They advised me how to proceed with the sender bank and that was that - no drama, no BS, just good professional customer friendly service.

Last year I had a similar problem with a transfer to Bangkok Bank and contacted BB via the "contact us" link on the BB webpage and again the matter was resolved quickly and very professionally.

If I encountered a similar problem in the future I would start by contacting the sender bank and obtaining the TM103 Form from them.  Then I would present the TM103 in an Email conversation with Bangkok Bank via the BB webpage.  If that didn't work I'd visit my BB branch with the TM103 but if I lived in or near Bangkok (which I don't) I'd probably go directly to BB head office which I think is in Silom Road(?).

I hope that the above is helpful.

I have had this problem twice with SWIFT transfers and it is easily resolved.  The receiving bank (in your case Bangkok Bank) can only help if they have the transmission details which the sending bank hold.

So,

1 Request a copy of the sending banks SWIFT (MT103 Form) otherwise known as Proof of Sending Form.  The bank should be able to Email this to you.

2 Send a message to Bangkok Bank via their webpage stating your name as shown in your Bangkok Bank account passbook and your Bangkok Bank account number.  The message that I sent was as follows (details omitted):

I asked my Thai solicitor a couple of years ago about preparing a Power of Attorney document.  She replied that she would happily do so if that's what I wanted, but warned that in her opinion it might prove very difficult to make any Thai bank, bank branch, or bank manager act on it and so advised against it.

She advised that my best option would be for me and my proposed attorney(s) to cultivate a positive relationship with the Thai bank branch(es) that I use in the hope that they would try to be helpful if I ever could not take care of matters for myself.  So I took her advice.

I do have a UK Power of Attorney document which was prepared in the UK and which is now stored at my UK solicitor's office.  It has no value here in Thailand.  I doubt that any Thai organization would accept it - especially because the original would never be forwarded here.  Best practice is that it remains in the solicitor's safe keeping and only certified copies are released.

It should be noted that UK banks are extremely difficult and obstructive about accepting Power of Attorney documentation too, but that's a whole other discussion and doesn't directly relate to the OP's post.

What are the percentages of usage on your CPU, memory & disk? And what is causing it? As others have said, a reformat should help, changing the HDD for an SSD with a clean install definitely will help.

Thanks for your input.  Task manager has always been inaccessible when the display freezes.  At the moment all readings appear to be in acceptable ranges.

I couldn't agree more.  I'm a big fan of Linux.  I used Linux for many years but returned to Windows for the reasons as outlined below by @manarak.  Also I found that whenever I shared a Linux generated file with a Windows user (WindowsUser=AlmostEverybody) they wouldn't be able to open it or else when they did open it the formatting would be lost/corrupted.
