Shocking murder, feeling less safe here all the time.

RIP Mr. Kenbay and I hope your killers are brought to justice.

"Feeling less safe here all the time"?

Are farangs are being smoked day in, day out on the streets of Pattaya?

Are there snatch gangs roaming the streets looking for fat, rich farangs to kidnap for ransom?

Why would people stay here if that's the case?

    Oh, hang on.......

No what they need to do is piss test as many of the oh-so-squeaky-clean white sex tourists and sexpats as they can and dish out highly-publicised punishments (deportation, custodial sentences, large fines) as a deterrent.

These scum are the Africans' number one customer for coke, yaba and methamphetamine in those areas.

It's time people pull their heads out of their asses and realise that there's no supply without demand.

The police should tackle the problem from both sides of the equation - hit the dealers but make sure that customers realise the serious consequences of being caught with even a tiny amount of contraband

Ever noticed the only people that want to get into Thailand are farang

You are persistent  in your effort to cover your original faux pas. Unlike you I have no reason to distort the truth, and yes I am patronising in areas where I clearly hold knowledge others have made no effort to discover. There is nothing more to discuss, I do not come onto threads like these to spread falsehood. I have no 'statement' to defend as I tell it how it is, in my life. You can't accept that, then I will never convince you otherwise, does that sound patronising? or the voice of experience from years of debate on Tvisa?

    What faux pas?

    What truth have I distorted?

How the hell do you know what others have "made no effort to discover".

How do you know that others haven't experienced the "intimate looks" and "basked in the afterglow"?

You didn't ask; you just assumed and proceeded to pompously secrete a load of syrupy BS about "little touches" and "sparkling eyes" as if you're some sort of love Jedi who's awakened to the true nature of the universe.

Mate, it's taken you until the twilight of your life to discover what you call "true love" after, by your own admission, screwing up several relationships with booze and partying.

On a personal level (I can't speak for others but if I want to know, I'll ask them), I didn't have to go through a lifetime of f*** ups and wait until my dotage to experience what you're gushing about like some daft teenager.

Oh and, what's more, I didn't have to come to Thailand and cough up an allowance to do it.

  5. The guy's incredibly unstable so one has to believe that Congress and the Senate will stop him doing anything really stupid.

Getting involved in slanging matches on Twitter is not the behaviour of a Commander-in Chief.

I think it's worth remembering the sheer scale of the opposition to him from within his own party during the presidential campaign.

That $1 trillion fiscal stimulus plan will be heavily opposed and Trump himself will be impeached within 2 years.

China won't back down, you can count on that.

Those of us who have successfully negotiated the ups and downs, the sharp curves, U turns, and cul de sacs of life, are aware, and have experienced the many facets of the female form. With 'true gratitude' as you call it, firstly it does not compare with true love, second the effort is high maintenance on the part of the female and the mask can too easily slip.

I am always rather surprised when my wife slips her hand into mine walking in Public, I shouldn't be, she does it often, then looks up into my eyes and smiles. Before you say it, I am not at the stage where I need support, or helping across the road. I get the impression my wife is proud to be my wife and not afraid to demonstrate this in public....I guess she is comfortable and confident with the thought our love will last...she should be, I have never been happier, married to such a remarkable person, we think along the same lines, only very occasionally have a variance of opinion, we are confident enough to be very open about how we feel on all topics.......we make a good team......I'm afraid this information may come as quite a shock to you but never the less appears to be the case.

You will of course be starting to work out why my life is successful and I have the ability to build lasting relationships......just look at how tolerant I have been with your questioning and innuendo even though you are far off track

No but I am wondering why you expect people totake you at your word when even the most basic, innocuous questions about the circumstances have you pulling the privacy card after such a laughable display of self-aggrandizement.

Cross-generational unions are almost always based on a financial arrangement.

If you say yours is based on "true love", that's your business and nobody else's.......until you patronize others.

    Dear Yeah Siam

To take a quote out of the clip you provided - "It is about what I am entitled to do "

I am entitled to limit the information I provide about my family on a public forum  for no other reason than to be sure my family are put at no risk.

Again thank you for your concern,  I do not wish to labour the point but your concern is unwarranted and totally unnecessary. Please do not further waste your time pontificating, apologies if you have not reached the conclusion anticipated. Life can be like that.

    Well wait a minute.

You're the one who proclaimed that you have this idyllic situation and that the more realistic among us lacked "je ne sais quoi" because we apparently don''t experience the "intimate looks", the "little touches" etc.

You put your business in public then when called on it, you pretend it's suddenly become private.

Answering a simple question about whether or not you pay a stipend won't put your family at risk; neither will stating whether or not the children are yours or your wife's from a previous relationship unless of course 473geo is on your passport or your house book.

Anyway, look, if you don't want to say then don't but you'll understand if I and other posters reading your cryptic, Howard-esque responses surmise that you are not an exception at all.

Kid yourself all you want - there's no law against being deluded - but don't feign pity for those of us who can see what guys like you really have even if you can't.

I appreciate your concern for the welfare of my family and I, but it really is misplaced.

Oh dear oh dear  oh dear - let it go

Depends on whether the children are yours or were in situ when you arrived.

Well without providing too much detail my wife and her family have played a large part of out family progress over the years and so it continues, truly a partnership, not a one way street at all. My wife is also very protective of the interests of our immediate family. So yes life is good, and we work together to improve all along the way, a truly enjoyable experience.

Many will have seen me write this before......my life has never been about money

Very skilfully evaded but you didn't answer the question

    Are you paying an allowance?

    Yes or No?

After all, no one actually wants to admit they're a mug."

That would be me then.......excepting I happen to think the 'mugs' are the ones that think it cannot happen.......perhaps lacking a certain 'je ne sais quoi'

Well if you've achieved that apparent state of nirvana without having to serve up an allowance to her or her family, good on you; you may well be that exception

If, on the other hand, if you're doing the "stupid stipend" thing, I'm afraid nirvana is definitely one-sided in your case.

Ignoring the fact that (I think - but could be wrong) that there aren't many thousands of foreigners here earning over 80,000 bht a year - it also has to be remembered that there are probably a similar number of non-working, extremely wealthy foreigners living here, spending just as much - if not more.

It also has to be remembered that us 'lowly' retired expats only having a minimum income of 65,000 bht per month to spend - bring NEW money into Thailand, rather than re-circulating existing Thai money - as is the case with most of those working here.

    You are wrong.

There are many thousands of foreigners working here on much more than 80K a month.

There may be many "extremely wealthy" foreigners living here but most of them won't be pensioners.

Most pensioners move here to stretch a buck - nothing wrong with that but they should stop kidding themselves that they're a central pillar of the Thai economy - sorry but you're just not that important.

There are far more of you "lowly" expats who park that 800K in a Thai bank to qualify for their visa/extension of stay but live on pensions of less than 20 or 25K a month.

800K is nothing - even at today's significantly lower exchange rate to most Western currencies.

    20-25K a month is nothing -it's less than GBP500 or USD700 a month.

  14. Completely agree with the OP.

It's seriously disrespectful to grope someone in public even if it's in a club or a bar.

The hookers often don't complain for fear of losing a mark but they definitely don't like it.

I saw a guy the other day in a bar trying to force a hand into a girl's shorts while pressed up behind her at the bar.

Utterly disgusting behaviour and a total lack of respect.

She might be a hooker but she's still a f******* human being.

    Do that shit in private

So that means in my 50 year working life I was an expat in 35 different countries ranging from 2 or 3 weeks to over 4 years at a time. Most of the time my salary was paid in my home country and I only brought enough money into whichever country I was working in to pay my living costs and did not necessarily pay local taxes.

No I am NOT here to stretch my Western currency but to live with and support my Thai wife and our son. I haven't lived full time in my home country since 1992.

In addition to that because of living in Thailand retired and full time I am actually a NON Immigrant according to the Thai Immigration Office who issue my retirement extension of my NON Imm O visa.

Technically, you're only a "non-immigrant" in that you've not been granted indefinite leave to remain, citizenship or permanent residence but to all intents and purposes, you are an immigrant.

Your status as an expatriate over the last 50 years doesn't enter into it.

In any case, you asked me to give my definition of a real expatriate - that's what I did.

Don't take it personally just because I used the word, "you" or "you're".

You'd be better off de-stigmatizing the word "immigrant" or "migrant" rather than clinging to hierarchical labels you think elevate you above your counterparts who move to the US, Europe etc to be with their families or to improve their lives.

  16. I was initially tempted to say "You'll figure it all out in time" but I guess you came here for help so......

You can buy whatever you like from wherever you like but you're going to have to pay import duty on whatever you bring in.

This is why imported stuff is more expensive; get used to it or buy local stuff.

Those brands you're looking for likely won't ship to Thailand.

You'll have to ship them to someone in your country and then get them sent on to you.

    Again, factor in import duty

You won't get stuff at UK prices unless you import them illegally or get a mate to bring them in should they visit.

Well that's exactly why I am thinking of taking my whole little family to Malaysia, and visit here from time to time. IMHO all the the rules here have one aim: make you feel unwanted. Friendly staff in my Immigration office doesn't let me overlook the petty(corny) rules. When I immigrated to Australia, they stamped my passport, applied for a few return endorsements, when going overseas, and, 4 years later I was Australian...

    Fair enough.

It's enough of a pain in your ass to justify shipping out so that's what you're doing.

I wish more would follow your example instead of carping on about it and insisting the Thais don't want us here when the reasons for what seems like the pettiness of the requirements are well-known and accepted by so many of them.

It's  rapidly appoaching the boring stage. The street vendors and their wares and food are one of the major tourist attractions to Bangkok. Another factor seriously affecting this tourism attraction are the many areas scheduled to disappear because of new developments, mainly of overpriced condos or shopping centres which are obviously a money laundering project for the investors. Examples are Hemmingways on Sukhumvit soi 14, now gone and due to be replaced by one of the above mentioned developments and cheap charlies just off soi 11 plus the very good adjacent restaurants, soon to go. The information I have that almost all these new developments are on land owned by indians, Washington square being one as well. How is this so?? I understood only Thais could own the land.

Tens of thousands of Indians are Thai nationals so they can own land.

Sansiri, Noble, APThai and other publicly-quoted real estate development companies are money laundering projects, are they?

As usual, a little information can be dangerous.

There are plenty of street vendors left elsewhere in the city which does, believe it or not, extend beyond Sukhumvit and the side sois off it. I bought my breakfast off one this morning

Most of the crap that was being sold on Sukhumvit can be bought at a million outlets elsewhere in the same locale.

The clean out means that real shops selling stuff of real interest (Asia Books, etc) can be found easily rather than having to wade through counterfeit Kamagra gel and "DKNY" underwear with "Emporio Armani" labels inside.

I agree that the last thing the area needs is more malls and overpriced condos but the land owners can do whatever the hell they like with their assets.

It was the Thais who pressured the authorities to clean up the streets. Just because they didn't do it farang style by jumping up and down and yelling, doesn't mean they weren't fed up.

It's their city and their area.

They don't give a shit if the "spectacle" for farangs is reduced, they want their quality of life to improve.

  19. 14 hours ago, billd766 said:

Would you like to explain YOUR definition of a real expat to us all?

    OK, I'll bite

While the term "expatriate" can be widened to encompass anyone who lives outside their home country, it's most commonly used to define those who live in another country in a professional capacity - as in working

The fact is that we are migrants in the same way that foreigners who move to our home countries are migrants.

The term "expatriate" has romanticised connotations and is associated with words like "pioneering", "adventurous"

The term "migrant" has negative connotations and the Western man couldn't possibly live with a negative label like that.

A white man moves to a "brown" country and is described as an "expatriate" even though his reasons for moving are almost always tied up in affordability.

A brown man moves to a "white" country and is described as an "immigrant" even though he may be a skilled professional.

If you're here to stretch a pound or whatever Western currency your income is denominated in, you're an economic migrant.

If you're here to work in a professional capacity, you're an expatriate.
