  1. Hello,

I found a list of protected industries in Thailand a while back - industries which foreigners were not allowed to compete. From my recollection, it included things like banking, agriculture, etc. At any rate, I have a friend considering going into a certain type of business with some associates, and he'd like to check this list before proceeding further. I can't help him, as I can't remember where I found the list, or what was on it. Can someone provide the list, or a link to such a list?

    Thanks.

  2. <<This convicted murderer is only 24! Then he should be spending the rest of his natural life in prison which I feel is a far worse punishment than the death penalty! It's been proven that the death penalty is no deterrent for violent crime!>>

Of course it is a deterrent. That person will never commit a crime again, much less a violent crime.

    <<There's my 2 cents!>>

    Not even worth 1.

  3. <<You would have got notification of import duties.>>

We have received notification of nothing, so....

<<If you want to find out what's going on then you need to go to the post office and speak to the post office staff. If you aren't out in the boonies then someone in the office will speak English well enough to be able to help you. Have you not even visited the post office yet?>>

We went to the post office, as I believe my previous post said (perhaps not?). She was able to get little to no info from them from what I gathered, besides "we might have it" and "might be a problem with customs" and "no, we can't help you with jack crap unless you give us a number."

<<Why'll you're at it, contact the people who sent the package and get the tracking number and find out exactly how it was shipped, surface, airmail, regsitered, UPS etc.>>

It was shipped through the standard post office. Nothing fancy. There is no tracking number, to my knowledge.

What I want to know is, why do we have to go to the post office in the first place? If they have it, they need to send it to her house, send it back to the return address, or call someone on the phone numbers on the package. Is it not standard operating practice in Thailand that one of these things is done?

  4. What the heck is up with the Thai post office?

Been living in Thailand for the last few years. I have a health problem (tonsils) which requires me to use a waterpick. I brought over a small portable one, but that one hit the skids, so I had a family member package up and send me my larger "nonportable" one from the US. The family member put all the proper names and addresses on it, plus telephone numbers (Thai telephone numbers to call). I had it sent to a Thai friend's address.

It never arrived at my Thai friend's house. My Thai friend called the post office, and went there several times. She believes that they have it, although they cannot tell her, she claims, until we give them some kind of "number" which I assume is some sort of tracking number, which I don't have.

I have asked her why the heck they don't do one of the following:

    1) Call her since her phone number is on the package, 2) send it back to the US since the return address is on the package, or 3) send her a letter or something, since her address is on the package. She says "TIT" (this is Thailand)!

She suspects customs or someone may have the package and want some kind of import duty or whatever. Fine! Just act like "normal" people! Either call someone, send someone a notice, give us information, or send it back!

I'm not sure that I'm getting a complete story of what is going on here, because I have a language barrier between me and my friend. So... does anyone here know what the heck is going on? Anyone had any similar troubles? Anyone know what process the post office uses if they receive a package and want money?

    Thanks.

  5. Have lived here for several years. I am looking into transferring some business operations here, which MAY involve substantial cash flows into/out of my Thai bank account, or, substantial accumulations of cash into my Thai bank account over a period of time, which I may then need to transfer out depending on circumstances.

    1) I seem to remember reading quite some time ago that one could transfer money into Thailand, but as far as "substantial" cash (forget the amount - may have been tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of dollars), you couldn't transfer it out. Sort of like the Hotel California - "you can check out, but you can never leave?" Was this ever true? Is it true now?

    2) I read just today someone complaining about an "over $20,000 rule." What the heck is this?

I certainly need answers to these questions before embarking upon any decision to transfer any substantial money over here.

    THANKS.

  6. Will be in Thailand soon, and shortly thereafter will need to build a new custom computer. Doing this in the states is relatively cheap - you just scope the various sites such as tigerdirect and newegg, and mail order parts. However, I suspect if I tried to do the same in Thailand (mail order parts) I would get hit with import duties?

    1) Would I get hit with import duties? If so, what are the alternatives?

    2) What are the standard options for internet (DSL, cable, etc), how expensive is it, and how do you go about getting it?

    THANKS.

  7. I'd like to catch the bus at the Transportation Center. I just want to make sure here...

    1) THE "TRANSPORTATION CENTER" IS NOT ALL THE WAY BACK TO BANGKOK, RIGHT? I am assuming it's somewhere on the premises of the new airport, and simply requires locating and taking a shuttle bus to it? I'm not down with a 45 minute ride all the way back to BKK.

    2) Where do I find the shuttles to the Transpo Center?

    Thanks.

  8. <<The cheapest and least comfortable way is to take a shuttle bus from the arrival hall to the transportation center and catch a bus for around 106 baht.>>

This sounds like a good option. Are there signs, i.e. "arrival hall this way" and "shuttle bus that way?" Do the shuttle bus people and transportation center people speak english?

    Thanks - great info.

  9. Flying into the new airport from abroad. Going to see a friend in Pattaya for a few days before heading up north.

What's the best way to get to Pattaya from the new BKK airport? I am arriving at about 12:25 in the afternoon. I doubt it would be very pleasant to go all the way back to BKK in a taxi to try to hook up with a bus. Is there any transport near the new airport that would get you to Pattaya? What would you do?

    Thanks.

  10. Are you taling about a non-imm "B" visa? If so, purpose of visit is BUSINESS. I have always used that for my embassy abroad and it has been accepted. Probably because it's true.

I actually do not know what type of non-imm I need or will be granted, or even which type I will ask for (and in fact, I don't care). I am simply checking "non-immigrant" on the form. All my friends go to this one place, and they get non-immigrants granted. I am doing the same thing, I just need to put down something on the form that the Thais aren't going to scrutinize too much. I presume that some of you are doing the same sort of thing, and know what I should put down?

Is it "teacher?" Is it something else? What are you guys using?

    Thanks.

  11. Hello,

The web site for the Thai consulate says that the fee for a non-immigrant is "$50 per entry," or "$150 per multiple entries." I do not understand this. If it's $50 per entry, and you want multiple entries (say 4) - that would be $200. However, what the hel_l does "$150 per multiple entries" mean? Does that mean I pay $150 for each entry (say 4)? That would be $600. Or, does it mean $150 for a single multiple entry visa (say 4)? In that case, then why have "$50 per entry"??????

    Can anyone answer please? Thanks.

  12. Okay, I understand I am a little mixed up on terms. So let's forget the terms right now, or better yet, just stick to terms such as "corporate" or "non-corporate," etc.

I am interested in setting up a legal business entity that is "non-corporate" and that will allow me to partner with 1 farang, and POSSIBLY (if it doesn't complicate matters any more) a Thai partner. I would like this business entity to be the simplest, easiest, cheapest route to go. For example, is there such a thing as a "regular old partnership" (non-corporate, of course) that we could set up? Just what are my options?

By the way, I am under no illusions or fantasies whatsoever about doing business in Thailand or anywhere else. This business with my partner is already successful for 20+ years in the U.S. We are simply going to try to move operations to Thailand, where we are right now. The Thai partner we would like to bring on board (*IF* it doesn't complicate the business structure too much and force us into some kind of corporate thing) has been operating a similar business in Thailand for 11 years already. But no illusions or fantasies. Doing business anywhere is difficult. Doing business in a foreign country, especially Thailand, is nearly impossible. But we already accept these risks, and already have the capital ready to go. If it flies, fine. If it goes bust, no problem, at least we tried.

If you know whether we can do a simple, uncomplicated sort of partnership, let me know.

    Thanks.

  13. Hello,

I am a farang, and plan to open a business with a farang partner, and possibly a Thai partner (as originally planned) if this does not end up complicating matters on the type of business structure we need.

The original idea was to do what I call a "Thai corporation" (I think they call it a "public company limited?"), but after doing my own investigating and reading, it seems to violate my basic KISS philosophy (KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID). Way too much red tape, way too much expense, way too much government scrutiny, way too much delay, yadda yadda. My question is whether or not it is possible to do some very basic "partnership" without "going corporate" so to speak, and getting involved in that can of worms?

Question: Are there more basic, simple business structures available for farangs (possibly partnering with a Thai) than this "public company limited" approach? Just a plain, vanilla "partnership" perhaps?

Thanks so much for any help.

  14. Got a 3 entry tourist visa before coming to Thailand roughly 6 months ago. First entry was when I flew in. After 60 days I got a 30 day extension. After that I went across the border and came back, thus using a second entry. After 60 days I got another 30 day extension. Now, that is almost up.

Here's my question. When I got my 30 day extension last time in Chiangmai, the immigration guy told me to "come back to see him in 30 days so I could get another extension." This is not possible, correct? I must go across the border and come back again, right? He was wrong?

Second question - going across and coming back will only result in my having 30 days this time, not 60 which would be extendable to 90, right?

    Thanks for info.
