  1. He explained that power plants would need up to 500 tonnes of waste every day, adding that anything less than that would not be worth investing in.

Perfect example of a snake swallowing its own tail.

Problem: too much garbage. Solution: build waste-to-energy power plans. Problem: not enough garbage to make the plants economically viable. Solution: produce more garbage.

And there was me believing all that crap about us consuming the world's resources too fast. . .

  2. Gambling is proscribed by the Buddhist creed, to which over ninety percent of all Thais claim to be adherents. But just watch the locals rush to squander the housekeeping, the family savings and handouts begged from loan sharks when the first casinos open - as they assuredly will in the not-too-far-distant future..

For all the high-principled hogwash spouted by the present leadership, the sad truth is that in the Land of Smiles morality comes a very poor second to money..

More proof, if it were needed, is the plan cooked up between real estate developers and government officials to give away automatic free 20-year visas to foreigners who buy a condo in Pattaya costing three million baht or more. What a slap in the face to all those long-term resident expats - many married to Thais and supporting extended families - made to apply and pay annually for the privilege of staying another year in their adopted homeland..

Personally, I'd rather live in a yurt in Outer Mongolia than pay through the nose for a high-rise with a bird's eye view of the dubious goings-on in Gomorrah. But that's not the point. Thailand is constantly striving to be the "hub" of something or other. Why bother? It is already a world hub - of hypocrisy.

  3. David has committed to using his powerful global voice . . .

His what? Obviously the author of this article has never heard Beckham speak. I have, and instantly stopped believing in God. No creator with any pride in his (oops! - or her) work would spoil such a perfect example of male beauty by adding such an incongruous voice.

Never mind - actions speak louder than words and he is clearly a kind and caring, as well as talented, lad with his heart in the right place.

  4. Kasikorn has a reputation as one of the safest Thai banks and made a healthy profit last year. However, the timing, length and scope of the shutdown. combined with the coyness over detailing the reasons are not exactly calculated to boost customer confidence.

OK, so TIT. But it is worth bearing in mind that should any Thai bank go belly up, only the first million baht of account holders' deposits are covered by the nation-wide deposit insurance scheme.

  5. A bit rich, to say the least, coming from the representative of a country which has cynically used the so-called "war on terror" as a pretext to systematically undermine the democratic rights of its own citizens and attack other nations without just cause.

Feigned American concern over political freedom and human rights in Thailand should fool no-one.

What the White House really wants is a return to the palmy, freewheeling days when their billionaire proxy, Thaksin Shinawatra, presided over the Kingdom's affairs. The military-led caretaker administration, pledged to squeeze corruption and cronyism out of the system, is equally determined to keep the Oriental wolf of Wall Street from their door at any cost.

    So, it's seconds out. . .

The longer a general election is delayed, the louder one can expect the howls of US-fostered international outrage to become. With an increasingly belligerent China actively seeking closer political and economic ties with Thailand, relations between the US and its diminutive but strategically important Asian allay could be about to enter a crucial new phase.

  6. Morons in uniform trotting out the same old crap of sedatives on body parts.

The morons are those who don't believe it. Ask any Thai woman you trust (should narrow the field a bit!) about the stuff ladies of the night and other undesirables use on gullible falangs.

I well remember a notorious hooker in Hua Hin who used to knock out her elderly gent customers by getting them to lick her boobs which had been smeared with some dodgy substance. The police were not so much concerned about her customers being robbed as suffering possible heart attacks from the powerful narcotic she used.

Some conconctions are apparently so strong that a single drop on bare skin can lead to a loss of consciousness or temporary disorientation - a bit like half a dozen Changs on an empty stomach.

  7. Shades of the Profumo affair and the scapegoating of Dr Stephen Ward, which led this sprat among a motley shoal of hi-so mackerel to commit suicide rather than face the ordeal of a trial on dubious charges.

Strauss Kahn's sexual pecadillos were arguably small beer compared with those of some of his far more prestigious compatriots now running the Republic, but enough of the mud flung by his enemies stuck for a promising political career to be destroyed.

The relentless pursuit of Strauss-Kahn and the late Dr Ward contrast starkly with decades of foot-draggig in the UK over the alleged involvement of household name figures in pedophile rings, including one said to have operated from the Palace of Westminster itself.

Justice, it seems, can choose when to be blind.

  8. M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula commented that the present administration has never stated that it was planning to increase the daily minimum wage in 2016.

In October 2014 the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) published the declared wealth of all ministers in the cabinet. Pridiyathorn was the wealthiest with assets of 1.38 billion Baht.[36] . (Source: Wikipedia)
