A water-related, slightly off-topic story 🙂 When I first moved to work in Yangon, I lived in an old tenement building in Latha Township. The shower was just a rusty old pipe from where dirty, smelly cold water trickled out. I hated having showers! One day, after a particularly foul shower, I asked my Burmese neighbour where the shower water came from. "It comes from the river at the end of our road" was his reply. Great! I have been showering in dirty river water..... Then I had another thought. "And where does my toilet pee and poop empty into?" I asked. "Why, it all empties into the river at the end of our road" was his reply!!!

Why on Earth did you drink the tap water? I have lived in south-east Asia for 23+ years and have never even considered drinking the tap water water in Thailand, Laos or Myanmar. (I'm a scientist, so I understand the risks that could exist...). Anyway, if you boiled the water, I hope you can sleep at night after boiling all those cute bacteria to death..... Now all you need to concern yourself with are the various heavy metals and other elements/compounds etc (think Arsenic, Mercury etc) that aren't neutralised/removed by boiling the water!

Lol, not sure what you mean 🙂 When I left the UK for Thailand, I had to surrender my guns to the police. I do miss horse-riding on Exmoor, but the current lack of property to rent over there is keeping me in Laos/Myanmar for the present.

I lived in the English countryside for many years, shooting a couple of pheasant every weekend, hanging them in my attic for a week and then skinning/degutting them. The meat tasted great but it was the only time that I took up smoking a cigar as I disembowelled them 🙂 I used to catch magpies using a Larsen trap (live female magpie in the trap to attract other magpies). Magpies kill song birds, so I had no remorse about killing them. Mind you they would give me the evil eye as I twisted theiir heads round and round until their necks broke... There was plenty of fox hunting with hounds in my neck of the woods, both in Buckinghamshire and on Exmoor. Although I rode horses a lot as a kid, I never rode with the hounds, but I 100% understood the need to control the population of various animals, especially those who prey on others. It's a pity that the same rule isn't applied to the human race.

Also... given the choice of living in Hull or living in Luang Prabang, for some reason I chose the latter 🙂

The rental cost of the house isn't an issue - the wonderful UK benefits system will pay all or almost all of my rent..... It's the lack of rental properties and the number of people chasing that property to rent.

I looked into these benefits when I recently considered returning permanently to live in the UK. As a single pensioner of limited financial means, I would receive about 550 quid/month in rent assistance, zero council tax liability, of course free NHS, bus pass, discounted utilities, free eye check-up and glasses etc etc. It would be wonderful, except there are few houses available to rent and the UK is full of Muslims..... I think I'll forego those benefits and stay in south-east Asia!

It's completely irrelevant as to what design or colours were painted - it is the reason why they painted the flag that matters (patriotism). If they got the colours or layout incorrect, so what?! Stop 'dissing' others who no doubt did not have such a wonderful education as yourself....
