  1. there are definitely some expensive places on there, but there are also places that go for about 10,000B/month. Also have to consider that those are all inclusive prices. Places in the lower price ranges are for rent only. Either way, if its out of your price range, try the other two sites....

"I feel like I will get something better if I look around when I get there"

This is true, but as 'cabralad' points out many of the better or cheaper places fill up quickly. You will be better off having at least a short term rental reservations and then look around once here. Also keep in mind that its easier to rent by month from the 1st rather than some odd day.

Check out the Thai Visa classifieds for Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Citylife classifieds, and www.airbnb.com for Chiang Mai.

    Good Luck!

I find airbnb to be quite expensive when I know there are places around that are around 5K-10K baht. Airbnb seems closer to 15-30K

Great advice, thanks! So good oppertunities there, however I'd like to check most of them out in person so I might just have to find a temporary place first.

  3. Will it be tough to find a good deal for April and March in Chiang Mai?

Songkran will be in full effect, does that book up a lot of the rentals or just the hotels?

Basically, I am wondering if I should find a short term solution for now and then when I get there in April try to find something, or try to book something now.

I feel like I will get something better if I look around when I get there, but I also don't want to miss out if a lot of the good places get booked.

  4. You have seven days either side of the report date in which to appear. I always go before rather than after, just in case the officer is having a bad day and introduces a rule of his or her own.

To the former it is 15 day's before and seven days after the expiry date, as to the later approach them with a smile and it will not occur.

What is this, some sort of riddle?

  5. Visas are obtained outside Thailand for all but extension of stay reasons (which you would not qualify). Also be aware any work performed in Thailand legally requires a work permit which you will not have; and likely will not be able to obtain.

I am a little confused by this, Can't I get an extension on my 60 day to a 90 day? Or maybe you mean the 6 month entry?

When you do border runs to activate the next 60 day entry, you must enter the neighboring country so you have to purchase a visa at the border, Laos = $35, Cambodia = $20, Myanmar = 500 baht, and Malaysia = free.

Note to OP Celcius: Lao fees differ by nationality. Canadians must pay $42 for a Lao entry, more than any other nationality. Any reason would be speculative.

Probably because they know we won't complain and just apologize for bothering them

  6. Yeah, you're right. I am looking more of a version of the map about, but instead of from 1995 but the 2013 version. A web 2.0 if you will - hahaha (going to go kill myself now)

I have this Google Map image I made, but I feel it doesn't give the full detail. Just checking to see if someone knew of thing better. It can be hard to know what area someone is talking about. Looking for a kind of reference sheet.

  7. The visa will be valid from for 6 months form the day that it is issued, not the day that you enter Thailand. That's why you should get the visa just before leaving and not in advance as you will lose days.

Oh very interesting! Is it possible to get a visa upon entering the country, or while in the country or do I have to do it before I enter?

Just trying to maximize my time.

  8. During the last 30 days of each initial 60 day permission to stay you go to the immigration office responsibles for the area and apply for the extension. Fill out form TM7, 1 picture, copies of your passport (bio page, visa page, current permission to stay stamp), copy of your departure card (TM6) and 1900 baht.

When you do border runs to activate the next 60 day entry, you must enter the neighboring country so you have to purchase a visa at the border, Laos = $35, Cambodia = $20, Myanmar = 500 baht, and Malaysia = free.

All three entries must be made on or before the "must enter by" date on your visa, so it's best to get the visa just prior to leaving for Thailand as they are valid for 6 months from the issue date. You will have to do your last exit and re-entry before that date so you might not get full use of the last extension. When you enter the third time you will get 60 days which can be extended even though your original visa has expired.

    Great info, thanks.

If I apply for my triple visa today in Canada will it start now or when I enter Thailand?

  9. If you get a triple entry tourist visa just prior to leaving you can get almost 270 days with 2 border runs and 3, 30 day extensions. The consulate in Vancouver used to be very friendly and you can do it by mail

How do you do the 30 day extensions?

My only question is why do you NOT want to have a return ticket. It is usually much cheaper to purchase a return ticket than to buy two, one way tickets. From what I've understood when talking to the Thai consulate in Canada I can get a triple entry visa which gives me a maximum of 180 days, but practically, more like about 175 days because you lose the remainder of any time left on your visa every time you leave the country. Then, providing you FLY out of the country you are allowed 3 more exits and returns for a maximum of 30 days each time. If you were to time it perfectly and make your exit on the last day your visa expires then you could get 180 days + 30 days, + 30 days, + 30 days, or a total of about 270 days which equates to about just under 9 months. After that you have to wait a year before returning.

I'm fortunate that I only WANT to stay in Thailand for 6 continuous months each year.

Thailand has good reasons for the laws they do. They DON'T want people just to immigrate to Thailand without going through the proper process. Thailand is certainly a LOT more lax when it comes to tourists visiing their country. You certainly can't do that in North America. The average poor Thai can not even come to North America as a tourist, even if they have a return ticket and passport.

I don't have a return ticket as I don't plan on returning. I will probably stay in Thailand for about 9 months or however long my visa allows, and then move on to another country.

Vancouver BC Thai consulate is great! I got my B visa there w/out any hassle.

I plan on working there, telecommuiting. However I don't have much in ways of documents expressing this. What kind of documentation did you need to get a B visa?

The return ticket can be asked but normally is not for western world home country visa applicants. But it is included in the requirements as they can ask when they feel it is prudent.

As said there is no limit on stay or requirement to stay away any period of time.

Oh, that makes sense. Hopefully they don't ask!

  10. I am trying to find some information about getting a Thai Visa from Canada.

What is the best way to go about this? What do I need?

On this site here - http://www.thaiembassy.ca/en/visiting-thailand/visas/types-visas-periods-stay-fees/tourist-visa

    It says

    • Passport
    • Visa Application Form
    • Recent passport photo
    • Return flight

Well, I won't have the return flight, is that going to be a problem? I am hoping to stay in Chiang Mai for a while and just extend my visa as needed. Probably about 9-10 months total. Is this possible?

  11. well I did not ask for a review, thank you

Sure hope your attitude towards your customers is better than what you have just displayed here.

Came here to say this. You are looking for us to become customers but won't accept some well thought out criticism? Even if you don't agree with it, there is a more respectful way to handle it.

I for one, am also not a fan of the site. I can't find any way to do some advanced searching. The template you're using is old and has a terrible colour scheme. I do like your info section, looks like there is a lot of important questions there that people might ask. I also wish the price displayed on ALL the search results for a quicker comparison. Good luck, you might be able to get more customers if you focus more on the actual functionality of the main product, and hear some criticisms.

  12. What's this term "ballhockey" ???? - I've played FIELD-HOCKEY for many years in Holland and even made it onto the Army's first-team there for a while, also played in Canada, but I've never heard it refer to as "Ball-Hockey" . . . . .

Can someone please enlighten me; this really puzzles me.

Ball hockey is the mix in between field hockey and ice hockey. In the fact that you run on a surface (artifical, cement, etc) instead of ice. You also use a ball instead of a puck, usually a orange ball. Also you use a normal ice hockey stick, instead of the field hockey stick. Other than that, the object of the game is still the same. Trying to score :P

  13. Thanks for that link, it appears it's quite possible to get a nice place for a good prices as long as you know where to look. I can't see how many bedrooms some of those suites offer, it just says comfortable for 4-5 people.

Are there any other places similar to that, I wouldn't even mind paying a bit more in the Nimanhymen area.

My friends and I have stayed at Emporium and several other places in that area.

The single rooms are very nice ....... Thais all sleep in the same bed.

Get a single room for a week or a month, look around the area.

That sounds like the way to go. Find a place for a bit until I can find something else a little more permanent.

In that area you have highlighted, there are literally loads and loads of places.....in Santitham expect to pay 5k per month for a room with TV, fridge and aircon. If you want something better, then an apartment in Nimmanhaemin two rooms and/or living area expect to pay 9k-15k?

    Generally, 3 months is minimum.

Quite like the look of this place but bit of building going on next door at mo.

This place is now finished, I checked out rooms small but nice and now has a vibrant little area going on, coffee shop downstairs, 7-11 close, few nice little Thai places to eat opposite.

I have lived in Santitham area on and off for years, I like it. Just be aware if you want peace and quiet, you do not want to be in the rooms overlooking Santitham Plaza, it is quite loud at night!

Thanks, I wish I had the names of those places. I guess I'll just have to look around when I arrive!

  14. You'll be here during low season, so there won't be a problem with availability. If you book online or in advance, you might end up beside a construction zone. Did you know, for example, that in the center of the area you indicated, there's a massive new development underway - Maya shopping center. You wouldn't want to be close to that until at least next year.

Get a hotel room for 2 or 3 days somewhere central and make enquiries when you arrive. There are lots of places in the area you mentioned whose business is to rent month to month places - but there's a lot of construction, and who knows where they'll break ground in a few months time. Landlords generally want 6month rentals, but they might be more flexible if you're renting 3 months in the off-season. Choose some places online to view the week before you arrive, but don't agree to anything until you've seen them.

I didn't know about the construction, thanks! Also the low season, that should help.

I'm thinking something around this area -- how is this area? http://goo.gl/maps/IOETG

    You've circled three areas

Bottom half ...... Nimanhymen, yuppy and pricey

Top Left ....... Jet Yot, cheap, rooms around the Lanna College can be had for 2k/month

Top right, Santhitham, loads of places around 5k/month

Emporium residence in Santhitham road is fairly good at 5k/month, right in the center of students

    http://www.emporiumchiangmai.com/

Loads of other places in the same road.
