  1. bag snaches,shootings,stabbings what's happening to Samui?

No different then what's happening in George Town,KL, Bangkok, Phnom Phen, Sydney, New York, Addis Ababa , Hong Kong Etc...Etc...Etc...

A question for you - do you live on Samui? If you do and crime is a problem for you, please let us know where you are so that we can avoid that area.

    Sorry - edited for spelling!

Yes, I do live on Samui.

I know of many women who will not drive on the ring road at night because they have previously been the victim of muggings/bikejackings.

There is a schizophrenic woman who roams the streets lamai, frequently with her face covered in blood after being severely beaten by locals.

I had a friend here on vacation last year who was shot in the leg by a Thai who tried to steal his girlfriend's bag.

One of my good friends has had his house burgled twice in the last 2 months (while wife and kids were sleeping there)

Violent homicides are extremely common for an island with as small a population as Samui.

There were so many shootings and stabbings at "Supersub" (the local nightclub in Lamai) that it was closed down permanently.

The police on the island are corrupt, most of them are drug dealers, and if the perpetrator of a crime is a friend of theirs they will not help you.

It's great that nothing has ever happened to you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It sounds to you like you live in a well-to-do gated community, so of course the incidence of crime there is going to be lower than average. Leaving your car/bike on the street with the keys in it though? That's just idiotic.

None of those places mentioned (with the exception of Phnom Penh and Addis Ababa) have anywhere near the crime rate of Samui, which is one of the most dangerous places in South East Asia.

Why do you guys go to so much trouble to attempt to downplay the crime situation on Samui? Even the Thai government admits it is a big problem.

I never lock my truck and my bike is left outside on the steet - usually with the key in the ignition. Our windows are always open - unless we go away.

Then you are a crime scene waiting to happen. Also, do you realise that your insurance company won't pay out if you leave the keys in the ignition?

  4. Hell, I did illicit things when I was 18-22 or so, I think I was 15 the first time I smoked weed........I recall the place.

And let me guess, you turned out fine? It's only other people that need protection and hand holding throughout their lives. You know, the stupid ones.

It's thinking like this that leads to the nanny state.

  5. i doubt it will happen but the Thai police should invite the UK police to help, at least there might be some chance of the truth coming out, v blame it on the nearest Burmese worker or farang.

You assume they actually want to find the real culprit. Might be some big policeman's nephew, which is why they usually blame these things on Burmese workers or Farangs. A real murder investigation could end up with some important Thai person losing face, which would be bad for the police.

  6. I thought the one at Choeng Mon was an eyesore.....all those in favour I can recommend Disneyland in Paris or Florida....I'm sure you will be very happy! smile.png

It's not up to you though is it?

Honestly mate, it's just a bouncy castle. It's not even a permanent fixture, it's no more an "eyesore" than a boat is.

It's unbelievable how much of a big deal you guys are making about something that's really not a big deal in any shape or form.

  7. How old and bitter do you have to be to get upset about a floating bouncy castle?

I'm neither old nor bitter, but when one of these appeared @ Choeng Mon beach a few years ago it came with a rather tacky 'PRICE 100 BAHT' written on it in black marker pen and was policed by the jet ski thugs-to the point where teenage girls were blatantly groped while males were assaulted or unceremoniously evicted for not paying instantly (100m offshore in swimming trunks!) or failing to understand that it wasn't free. The duration of the 100 baht was supposed to be for a full day, but many that went back after an hour or two were expected to cough up twice.

If it's going to be done it needs to be done properly- No 'policing' except perhaps a lifeguard, & free because takings will surely rise.

Why should someone invest in something like this so you can use it for free?

If they want to charge for it they can, get over yourself.

Bunch of communists on this board.

  8.

You still don't get it? Why would a country create a visa class for a small minority of people who don't add much value to the country.

You mean like retirees? Good question.

What makes retirees different from online workers, other than their age?

The main difference is that the retirees follow the law, and don't do any illegal work

Nor do online workers, since online work or telecommuting is not illegal. Again, another full of crap bush lawyer who thinks he knows everything but actually knows nothing.

  9. All that is described of someone using AdSense or affiliate marketing may be true. The topic is here is: Why should or should not Thailand offer such persons a long-term visa/extension to remain in Thailand when such persons repeatedly state that they do nothing that directly benefits Thailand in the manner that Thailand has repeatedly stated are its economic priorities?

What do retirees do to benefit Thailand? Why should Thailand offer such persons a long term visa/extension?

  10.

Why would a digital nomad, i.e. someone who tends to be young, free, single, independent and loves to travel and live in different places want to stump up 500,000B upfront for a card in a politically unstable country that they may not want to live in 1 year down the line let alone 5.

    Digital NOMAD.

Unlike a lot of the retirees who are stuck in Thailand and have little option to go elsewhere due to a dwindling amount of cash and no possibility to earn more these people tend to have options, regular funds coming in, and a desire to explore.

And where did this idea that they are all claiming to be rich hot shots come from? Some people make a lot of money online and some do not but none are claiming to be a hot shot.

Just guys and girls doing their thing online and making their own way in the world without having to rely on others to tell them what to do and pay them a wage.

Unless you are paying tax somewhere you are guilty of tax evasion which is a serious crime.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Yet another Thaivisa "expert" on nothing.

Where did you get your degree on tax law from buddy?
