I'll bet the author didn't actually visit the island. Or if they did they didn't take any photos - which is strange for a travel writer.
The pics in the original article are all stolen from elsewhere. ( For example the woman on the beach is from an Australian site in 2016. Just another outsourced puff piece from people with no real interest in travel.

Thanks for your help UbonJoe. :-)

Last question ( I hope ) Ubonjoe . . .
Quote. . .proof of retirement from your embassy.
As far as I know, he isn't drawing a pension. And isn't at statutory retirement age - just gone 50. So not sure how the Brit Embassy can confirm he's retired.
So looks like Penang is the best option. No police letter & no embassy letter required.
-
Roger . . . The usual passport copies, application form, photo plus . . .
Quote1. Curriculum Vitae
2. Official letter from the concerned Embassy/Consulate certifying the monthly income of at least
65,000 Baht
or Official letter from the Bank in Thailand certifying a valid account of at least 800,000 Baht,
and is being held at least 3 months before visa application.
3. Recent Police clearance or equivalent reference of no criminal conviction
4. Medical certificateBut is the police clearance from Thai police ( http://www.pcscenter.sb.police.go.th/eng/ ) or UK police. If it's from the UK, he'd have to go back there to get it, which is a bit of a hassle.

Just came across this thread when I was trying to find some info for a mate who needs to switch from a tourist visa to retirement visa in the next couple of month.
The main stumbling block for him is this requirement :
Quote5.3 Evidence of foreign currency fund transferred to Thailand
He's got the money in the bank. But it's been paid in via transfer from other Thai accounts or in cash. ( No, he doesn't have a WP. )
Any simple solution? Or does he have to find a way to take it all out, transfer it abroad then transfer it back in again.

Add me to the list of people who have been stopped at Swampy when coming back into Thailand. Have got a load of SETV and 30 day stamps in my passport and have spent most of the past few years in the country. Never any hassles before. This time I didn't have an SETV.
Single, with Thai partner but not married, I'll get a retirement visa in a few months, so was planning on doing a couple more hops over to neighbouring countries to get SETV to cover me until late August when I turn 50.
10 days ago, I was with my partner and her Mum in the Thai lane, coming back from holiday in New Zealand, they went through before me and then Immigration officer gave my passport a through looking through and asked if I was working here. ( I'm not ) No other questions but she called a supervisor and i was taken off for a friendly chat. He just asked about what I was doing here. Told him, live with my missus and her Mum and explained that I would get retirement visa when I can. He didn't ask for any proof of onward ticket or cash - which I didn't have anyway. But end result was a note in Thai on the 30 day stamp saying next time I had to get a visa.
As even people with SETV are getting knocked back, I am planning on getting an Ed visa from a language school in Pattaya and then using that to tide me over. Any recommendations for cheap school that can fast track the documents as I'd have to leave be 26 March .
I'll attend classes, if required, but am just doing it primarily for the 3 month visa which I can then renew for an additional 3 months which will take me up to retirement. So quality of teaching isn't paramount. it's a means to an end to avoid the current hassles entering the country on tourist visas.

There's a condo for sale. Currently owned by a foreigner on a registered 30 year Leasehold basis with the usual option to renew.
We ( myself & Thai wife ) want to buy it and will put it in her name, money to pay comes from her bank acc etc. So it would be held Freehold in a Thai name.
Q. Is the process for Leasehold to Thai freehold ownership relatively simple at the Land Office?
We've done freehold land sales from Thai to Thai and Thai company to Thai company ownership before. Also Leasehold condo from foreign name to foreign name. But I can't find any info about Leasehold to Thai freehold.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for quick reply. Put my mind at rest. ☺

My current passport is almost full, enough space for my next visa extension stamp & a reentry permit.
Was planning to get new passport this month but now have to do a trip back to the UK earlier than planned.
Will get new passport when I am back there.
So, on my return to Thailand will have old passport with visa & reentry permit. But Immigration will have to stamp me into Thailand on my new passport.
Is this allowed? Anyone done this before? -
You need a corpus. For decades & in some case centuries, loads of government documents, novels, research papers etc etc have been expertly translated into multiple European languages by private companies and governments. So the translate algorithms have lots of info to work with. With other languages there isnt always this massive replication of professionally translated, identical documents. The Thai - English corpus is minute compared to , say , German - English.
So you get the mumbo jumbo that is Thai - English translation on Google. It also accounts for the fact that Google is pretty good when it comes to translating well written, grammatically correct sentences but when you start throwing in slang it gets confused.
( This from a Google engineer who I know. )

Has all the markings of a botched assassination attempt by a jealous ex-KGB lover if you ask me. They wont forget what happened in Krasnovarsk in '74 and has been kept hidden until this day ( Unfortunately if I tell you I'll have to kill you.)

A bloke dies in suspicious circumstances and all TV members can do is debate how he could possibly be British and yet born in NZ. Almost like someone being born in USA and then ruling a foreign country - impossible to comprehend.

I came for the food. There's nothing like a Chicken fried rice to fill you up and prepare you for a night out at the bars.

Are readers of The Nation supposed to be impressed that several members of the same Thai family can all use Facebook & Twitter? Or just bemused at the crap The Nation fills its pages with nowadays?

Didn't get past the opening few seconds, the fact that they were riding a motorbike without wearing helmets was enough for me to be suitably outraged.

The cost of capturing the white elephant and looking after it could be offset by using it in TV adverts for skin lightening products.

Why can't I take my car and drive up on the foot path because I don't want to wait
You can. That's the beauty of driving in Thailand.

Pattaya Immigration trying to drag the image of the city upmarket. Got to admire their optimism. Next time - wear a Heineken singlet, a bit classier than Beer Chang.

35 x work permits = 140Thai employees. Sure they have work permits
Why the ? You find it hard to believe that four large clubs couldn't each employ 35 Thai staff or more? Bar staff, security, cleaners, dancers etc etc?

Bought a couple of things from them too. Best for people living upcountry. If you're in Bangkok, CM, Patts then I'm sure can get as good or better prices in a real shop. But easier to be able to order from English language ste rather than one of the Thai sites that sell the same stuff for the same or cheaper.

He must have really pissed of his missus. I'm assuming that the TV detectives are implicating her in this. A chainsaw might be too heavy for a Thai woman to handle and so likely that her brother cut up the body. I'm saying 'brother' but of course mean her Thai husband.
Take care, could happen to any of us. Mark my words.

So we're all agreed the wife did it. Good. Case closed. TV detectives keep up their 100% record of solving crimes that leave the thai police baffled. Now let's wait for next week's mystery expat death.

Bitcoin Trading Volumes
in Cryptocurrency News
Posted
Because all that volume came from Chinese exchanges which didn't charge trading fees : https://www.coindesk.com/bitcoins-volume-continuing-decline-major-exchanges/.
You'll see there's zero volume from China now as bitcoin trading is now banned there.
