  1. I have advised them to buy a coffee and sit somewhere till the first train leaves at six AM.

In my home country in Sri Lanka, there is an area called Bentota where there is a river to cross by Ferry. Usually tourists use it often. Recently a group of rich russians asked the ferry man how much it costs and he replied hundred, which is less than one dollar US. The russian pulled out a hundred dollar note and the ferry man was happy. Since then he asks for hundred Euros/ dollars from all tourists and at least 5 out of ten pay it as I was told. This is quite close to what my wife is experiencing right now in Bangkok!!

  2. Thanks a lot for your concern....They found the cabin, and the drivers are asleep in their cars and there is no one in the cabin and no driver is willing to drive!!! This is crazy! If anyone knows any other way to get out of the Airport, please post here as my wife is reading TV postings on her i pad. Address her direct....Chrisna is her name. Speaks Afrikaans too.

  3. Is anyone around at the airport now? The two ladies are peacefully seated inside waiting for the first train. Probably in four hours!

This is what my wife wrote about the Mafia just now....

They told me all of them have they same price and if we do not want to pay we can walk!! the audacity!! they can all fly a kite!!

    Who had similar experiences?

Unfortunately I am in Germany right now and cannot help. We have a car parked in the Garage in Chatuchak, but for many reasons they decided to use a Taxi.

  4. As a Sri Lankan, new in BKK, was looking for decicated coconut to prepare the traditional Roti bread. In Sri Lanka it is grated fresh and mixed into the flour with a pinch of salt and baking powder before they are roasted in a hot pan. I love them warm for breakfast with salted butter and jam!

Unfotunately, this product is not available in Thailand. I was in the Villa supermarket round the corner and even the Manager shook his head!

I heard from a friend about an Indian store near Asoke who could have it.

Who knows where a DIY shop is in Bangkok where I can get screws, tools and building material under one roof.?

  5. We too were worried about this issue and asked our Condo owner who herself is a Lawyer. This was her reply......

For the immigration issue, I checked with the immigration police, it's not lessor's duty to do. It will apply only for maid or servant who house owner applies work permit for her and allows her to work and stay at the house.

So, if we have a two year contract for our Condo, can we forget the immigration issue fully? of course we will do the 90 day report on the working visa.

  6. We arrived a week ago....my wife on a working visa and our daughter on a multiple entry tourist visa till the 26th of Sept issued in Germany. Our daughter is 25 and on a Belgian passport doing an 8 month online teaching diploma course. She plans to teach here after completing the course.

It is our first visit to Thailand and we have read so much about visa runs and overstay fines deportations and more so that we are not sure how we should handle things with our visas

    Our immediate questions are,

    1. Must our Condo owner register us at the Immigration or are we responsible do do it?

2.When the stamp on the passport reads valid until 26 Sept. can our daughter get an extension at an immigration office in BKK ? and if yes, for what period?

    3. If she MUST leave Thailand and return to get a new period of stay, would a land border cross be sufficient to get another 2 months?

    4. She has a triple re entry visa stamped on her passport which means that she could use the three to do the so called visa run. What is the best way for her to travel safe as a young inexperienced girl?

    5. Is there a max. limit of extension period for a tourist visa?

I am on a tourist visa myself but will fly out after 24 days in Thailand. So, I am ok.

    Any information is welcome.

    Thank you in advance

  7. I am a born Sri Lankan with German citizenship retiring at the age of 61 and joining my wife who has a two year work permit for Thailand. All what I read in Forums about visas is still too much for me to understand.I love my freedom to wake up in the morning and decide to do a trip to a neighbouring country as often as I please. I see that this is only possible with complications.

My wife will be having a work visa but coming into the country on a thirty day one that needs to be converted to a different status.

As I am accompaning her, I need to get a similar one issued in The Consulate in Germany.

Can someone here explain why my wife must leave Thailand to get her Visa extended after 90 days? This is the most awkward visa system in the world! Must I do the same? I am slowly regretting and feeling sorry for my wife who has to spend hours at Immigration offices and borders begging for visas.

  8. me being a diabetic type 2, read this point about MSG

MSG stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. So many diets these days are concerned about the Glycemic Index of foods and yet none of them address the fact that MSG and free glutamic acid stimulate the pancreas to release insulin when there doesn't even have to be carbohydrates in the food for that insulin to act on. The food industry has found their own "anti-appetite suppressant". It's a convenient way to keep consumers coming back for more. The blood sugar drops because of the insulin flood. And you are hungry an hour later. Sound familiar?

    Who has positive experiences?

  9. I drove twice from Germany to Sri Lanka overland obtaining a Carnet at the Automobile club in Germany. All countries including Sri Lanka accepted the document. I finally obtained an import permit to the vehicles paying the Import duty in Sri Lanka and flew back. I am coming to Thailand for a 2 year stay while my wife works as a teacher.

Who knows the formalities if I bring my left hand driven Vehicle that I use in Germany to use during the two year period and take it back? I was toying with the idea of driving, but after looking at the political situations of the countries I need to cross, I have changed to shipping.

Would the Thais accept the Carnet for 2 years?

What would a 2005 Corolla cost in Bangkok? Just an alternative idea....

  10. Reading about the trouble and the money one has to spend to stay in Thailand scares me from going there!
My wife has accepted a teaching post in Bangkok for two years, leaving comfortable Germany.
I am still trying to figure out what exactly we must do to enjoy the freedom of leaving Thailand whenever we wish and come back.
I feel like being imprisioned within Thailand and harrased after 90 days to cross a border to renew your stay permit. I am over 60 and do not need to work in Thailand.
My immediate questions to the forum are,
As my wife enters the country with a 90 day visa, issued in Germany upon presenting the letter of employment, would she get a visa for 1 year with multiple entries so that she can travel out of Thailand when she wishes?
What Visa would I get as the legally married husband? Must I keep crossing borders to renew my 90 day visa?
This is the most ridiculous set up I have ever heard of.
Can someone here make,a clear statement if I have got it all wrong please?

I read above that some even fly to my native country, Sri Lanka for this purpose.smile.png

  11. Hailing from an Asian country, and living in the west for over 40 years, and being married to a western lady, I can only tell you that Thaii partners are like all females world wide who like to be cared for and loved. If you give them trust you will definitely get it back.If she feels that you are loosing interest in her then you have not done your home work. Think well about what you, with a western background can do to put things right.

  12. Thanks so much for the infos.

Yes, you are right....I will wait a little with a car. We will be based in the Chatuchak area and according to your experience would you advice us to use public transport or Taxis? How would you advice a Female to travel alone 5 to 8 km from home to school? Is it possible to get one specific Tuk Tuk to do a pick up and drop off on a long term basis? Are they reliable?

  13. My wife will be moving to BKK in August to start teaching in an International school on a two year contract. We work and live in Germany and are both EU citizens. I will be joining her in Nov. after retirement in Germany. Our 25 year old daughter also an EU Citizen will be joining us to study in BKK while living with us. I do not intend to work in Thailand. Just the non teaching spouse as it is called.

Please could some of you in this forum advice us what visa we should apply for and what options we should take if we like to travel to the neighboring countries during breaks. For ex. Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia and even to Australia and my home country, Sri Lanka?

Are there certain do's and dont's in applying for Thai visas? We have never been to Thailand before but have experience in traveling worldwide. Thanks in advance for any advice one would have for us.

    Our immediate questions are...

Can our daughter come with us on a tourist visa and look for a school once she is in BKK and then apply for a study visa or is it better to fix the school before coming and get the long term visa at the Thai Embassy in Germany?

What exact Visa must the non working spouse apply for if he wants to go in and out of Thailand as he pleases?

Is there a Visa for my wife who is working, with multiple entries?

We are thinking of buying a car in BKK. Is there any Expat here with a vehicle in good condition that he or she does not need from August onwards that we can pay in foreign currency from a German bank to yours to an account in your home country? It could be a station wagon Corolla type and the deal will take place after we arrive around the 30th of July. We could do with a scooter too to start with. What are the formalities in purchasing a vehicle? How long can I drive in Thailand with my German national license and the International one valid for 3 years?

Must I obtain a Thai Driving License?

I see that moving to Thailand is not as easy as I thought! wink.pngwink.pngwink.pngwink.pngsmile.png
