  1. Takes 4-8 hours to receive a wire transfer from the USA to Thailand. Unless you're using a Thai or some other foreign bank.

About the same amount of time it takes to receive in Vietnam.

Use Citibank or HSBC and its no more than 4-8 hours.

  2. Wow, 60K a month. I couldn't do that. My deal was 29K for the house, 15K for the telephone, 14K elec, plus add the car, resteurants, housekeeper, gardener, net, water, a flight every 6 weeks or so, then add the cost of TWO computers and a Kliptch sound system ( 33K after shpping etc) that were wiped out during hellatious lighting storms ( Tot still insists on having telephone wires travel on top of the ground to the mountain top) in the course of only 8 months!

More than 120K/mo and definitely not like a king. Upper middle class by American standards, but not upper upper....just upper. Now add the boat.

  3. ""You Americans (yes I'm generalising and stereotyping) can be so touchy... ""

Well yes, I guess that since we're the best and so many hang on our ankles, we're allowed. Just think, a simple twist of fate and we could have been born #2, 3, or........australian.

    Perish the thought.

  4. Sorry, you're right. It's not backward at all and you can always hold them liable. I was only trying to help, but you seem to really know what you're doing in Asia so I'll humbly remove myself from this and maybe we can all learn something here.

    Good luck

  5. You will create more work for yourself and be at greater risk if you ONLY establish a US relationship with HSBC. BKK HSBC is fine, but the most user friendly branch is in HK ( other than the USA)

Therefore, ideally you would float from the USA to HK as your base in asia and throw the thai's a bone every now and then as a third account.

Unless you're bill gates. The attitude in thailand is unprofessional at best even at HSBC ( although way better than at the others with the exception of citi bank, which again you need to be bill gates to capture any attention there)

You may find yourself having to extricate yourself from Thailand and they are not as cooperative when the dollar is trying to walk out as they are in HK, or even Vietnam.

Slow down. You're nuts if you pay cash.

Again, but maybe you are bill gates.

  6. ``""As Thai people do not have real benefit from such [a] treaty, so why [do] we have to keep it?'' Mr Pornsilp asks.""

Frankly I have no problem with that nor do my counterparts in TL despite the USA is Thailand biggest trading bonanza.

I think we in America are going to be diversifying anyway and those who have an attitude can feel the heat for a few years while those who don't can have air conditioning.

  7. Hey! Bangkok bank? You may want to give HSBC a call. 2nd largest bank in the world and you will get the straight scoop from them which I'm not so sure you'll get the same elsewhere.

I'm able to move about pretty freely between Vietnam, HK, and BKK while maintaining things in HSBC Florida as well.

Great bank for this kind of thing.

    Good luck

  8. mrentoul, thank you for your continued example of intellectual depth. Thankfully we call all swim thru your pool and not get the tops of our feet wet.

And since you insist on reading my "jaundiced posts" ( your own admission), I suppose I could delight in the fact that such a giant of journalism who thinks of himself so astute can find no way to hold himself back from reading my inarticulate writing and then critiquing based on his wisdom, but frankly I find you laughable.

Thank you again. You are on permanent ignore.

  9. Uhhh excuse me, depends on which "press" you're part of doesn't it?

I mean if you want to "sell newspapers" the national enquirer" is pretty good.

On the other hand, if you want to be a journalist, perhaps you should consider something else as with an attitude like that, you're a long way from being thought of as one.

  10. Hey, please keep us informed on this one as my wife is Vietnamese and in my opinion it would be foolish to give up the green passport unless she can have two.

We're a few years from that, but I have british friends who seem to do ok with going both ways on that although a few of them have been getting their chain yanked on their pensions from England these days.......they live in the States.

    Thank you in advance

  11. Hi Tom,

It's possible. Thailand is about to go thru a continuing economic scenario that will most likely produce a change in attitude....but if not then I'm in agreement with you 100%.

My friends have all been to Cebu ( visited not lived) as well as Vnam. I've lived in Vnam, Thailand and have visited several others. I'm planning on visiting the PI to check it out. Next year.

  12. Yeh, real simple. You go to a foreign country and pay someone to make your life a little more simple. Whatever it may be. Pay for a work permit, pay someone to keep the police away, pay someone to wipe your ass, whatever.

And that seems to be ok for a lot of people. Why? Because they can that's why.

So you think that government doesn't do this? Don't like it? Too bad, nobody cares what you like or don't like. Think it's a free world? Hey, there used to be one place that had that. It's gone now. Thanks to all those who helped in it's demise. Now we can all pay for it.

Give me a break. Get real.

  13. Don't know how to answer. My wife is Vietnamese and there's a world of difference between the two.

When I took her to penang to get her a visa renewal, the embassy/consulate guy said to me with a smile, " why you no have thai girl?" to which I replied, "I have many thai girls", but Vietnam girl is for wife" to which he then smiled and said " I understand".

  14. Hi Tom,

I'm back in Florida after a couple years in Vietnam and South Thailand ( Koh Samui). My wife and I finished with our K-1 visa and I am now back on the treadmill in the States.

Howz cebu? I saw property selling for as little as 2 bucks a sq mtr on a beach over there with maybe the costs to bring in elec and water only a few grand. Don't want to publish the name of the island yet as I'm still researching it. Our plan is for me to go like crazy again in my coin business while my wife works on our Vietnamese penpal website and after we find an honest and knowledgable web person....to replicate the sites and also bring in a few other countries. Hopefull we'll have enough coming in for us to have the choice on where we want to be at that point.

How bout you? How long you been in cebu?

    Regards

  15. Dave, the more they think you NEED it the more they will extort from you. It's really as simple as that.

And you don't GO THERE and try to make your deal. Youo do that ahead of time and if it's not to your liking you pick a place that is.

Kiss no governments ass. They may have you hoodwinked into thinking they've got the best game in town and maybe they do. But there's a lot of different towns.

    Regards

  16. """Sure, a big problem is also that so few Thais get the chance to travel except to a Farang bf. At the same time, there should be given them an opportunity to visit the West for a sensible price."""

The opportunity needs to be created so that they have the opportunities for a better life where they are! Even the Chinese will admit that of the immigration doors to America had no rules, there would be nobody left in China and America's biggest language would become mandarin.

Philosophical crappola aside, the money's going to go to where it is best served. Where it is less taxed and where the legal extortion is kept to a minimum. Governments and the people that support them have themselves to blame. Use that to your advantage.

The next couple of years are going to be real interesting.........
