  1. When I was looking for some built in wardrobes using solid wood, I was advised on this forum to visit the several wood shops on Thepprasit Road. Due to my own limited time I couldn't get them built, so cannot comment on any shop there, other than to say there seemed to be good quality furniture on display.

  2. Also be careful not to cover halogen light fittings with insulation they get very hot

Yeah I knew about that one, about three inches from the light? thanks.

Looks like I'll be going for the Stay Cool foil wrapped installation after all, but wonder if its easy enough to cut down to size and seal it up using aluminium tape as the lengths don't match where the lights protrude in the attic floor.

  3. I wasn't going to choose PU Foam spray from a spraying company as it'll cost too much. Good point about it lifting the roof tiles though if not done correctly.

The insulation would be on the attic floor, not the roof tiles. I can't help but think that the screws pointing up through the attic floor and the metal clamps on the cables that hold the suspended ceiling will rip open the aluminium and expose the encased fiberglass. At Home Pro I noticed there are spray cans of Polyurethane Expanding Foam and was thinking that I could use one to cover these possible sharp edges before the fiberglass was installed. Of course if I went with the PU Foam sheets from Home Pro, this wouldn't be a problem, but I would like the best possible insulation option too. What do you think?

Also, can I use the spray can of Polyurethane Expanding Foam to close the small gaps between the walls and the suspended ceiling at the attic side?

    Thanks,

    Tom.

  4. I know this has been discussed before and on other forums also, but after reading loads of information I still can't decide if I would be better to install M-PE Metalized Polyethylene (double sided aluminium foil PE foam, 10mm thick) or the Stay Cool 75mm Premium fiberglass blanket encased in aluminium foil, or something else.

The house has the usual Monier CPAC tile system, but there is no insulation on the underside of the roof tiles or on the attic floor / ceiling. Obviously as an existing build I am limited in what I can do without spending too much. My thinking is that installing insulation onto the attic floor is my best option and should reduce the air-con usage too.

On paper the M-PE foam sheets seems to offer the best results (R=20), but I've not actually found anyone who has said it works just as good or better than the other solutions. On the flip side, although on paper the fiberglass encased in aluminium foil (R=11) doesn't seem to preform as well as the M-PE, most people seem to opt for the fiberglass solution.

Anyone got some experience with the above solutions or other recommendations?

I know there is the PU spray foam, but two quotes from ARC and the other company in Naklua were quite high compared to other solutions.

    Thanks,

    Tom.

  5. Good: Starting to walk from Beach Road up a soi towards Big C (Soi 2 or 3 I think), driver said to just get on the taxi and no charge. Once opposite Big C on 2nd Road, as he was about to drive off, I gave him 5 baht anyway, which got a polite thank you and a smile. So there are some good drivers out there.

Bad: Really to do with the customers; Getting on the baht taxi with some shopping and baby, other taxi customers (sometimes both Thai and farang) will happily move towards the rear of the taxi causing me to go inside and sit next to the driver's rear window, really awkward, especially if the taxi starts moving again before seated, people just don't think. Likewise with a pram (or suit case as I've seen with others), just don't seem to understand that the large item can sit on either side of the step on/off platform and you can sit on the end of the bench seat holding the item so it doesn't fall off, allowing other people to freely move on and off the taxi. Even putting the pram on the end and then having to explain to the people sitting on the end seat if I could sit there, sometimes met with - oh... yes... of course, and other times with confused looks. Some people are just totally oblivious to what's going on around them.

Certainly I've recently noticed an increase in baht taxis that will stop to pick up customers, but are really wanting a ฿100 rental, so as customers are about to get on the taxi, it pulls away again as the driver is not interested in just ฿10 or ฿20 fares. Some tourists are left a little perplexed. One amusing example I've seen was someone about to step onto the taxi as it pulled away, they still went through the motions and ended up stumbling a bit, but gave a little smile afterwards.

  6. Where's all the photos?

(At least when Global House in CM brunt we all passed along some great photos.)

Entering the Big C mall, there's still a slight smell of something burnt, roasted soles maybe.

Anyway, doesn't seem to have affected customers to the mall itself, and the chemist shop on the ground floor is opened again. As for the upper floor, all the shops (5) in between the said shoe shop that was on fire and before Bookazine (Bookazine seem to be untouched) have their shop windows covered up and checking stock outside. As for photos, I'd think the security guys there would quickly stop any being taken.

  7. what a great detailed and imformative post this is, everything you need to know, nice one :o

Well not everything, didn't include the actual price of this service. I'll assume its ฿2,500 as mentioned in Syd's second post.

    Regardless, lots of details, thanks.

  8. On the way home tonight my partner asked a motor cycle taxi guy who said that it was the cinema at Big C North that was on fire.

I haven't seen any other news to confirm this yet.

  9. I didn't realise that Robinson's in Sriracha even has a Toys 'R us. I know they have a toy department but I'm pretty sure it's not called Toys' R' Us????

You're correct, but they sell some of the same toys as Toys R Us do.

I went to Robinson's at Sri Racha yesterday for a look, as the toy shops in Pattaya (at Mikes, Outlet Mall, Toy R' Us at Outlet Mall, Toy R' Us 2nd road, Big C and Tesco) are somewhat disappointing in items I'd actually want for my kid and at rather expensive prices. However I couldn't find a Toy R' Us at Robinson's but the department store did have a small section of various toys, but I left there as disappointed as with the other toy shops.

Hadn't been to Sri Racha before, so the 30 baht per person there and 30 baht back on the bus from Pattaya was just fine and stops off / pick up at Robinson's too. Also went to see the Thai/Chinese temple.

  10. Possibly try the two big jewellery stores on North Pattaya Road on the City Hall side. Certainly a large selection, as for reasonable prices, you'd have to go look first. You can just walk in during the daytime.

I too am looking for some jewellery, would be interesting to hear how you get on, as well as hearing from others.

  11. We accepted a powdered milk product for our baby from the hospital (can't remember name), however our baby didn't take to it at all. We done a little research on the products found on the shelves in places like Big C and Tesco Lotus, and chose the Mead Johnson Enfagrow A+ system. He takes the milk with little to no trouble at all, unlike the other brand we tried first.

Also, we checked with Mead Johnson regarding the milk powder scare from China, and their products are fine, as also stated on their web site.

As Mizzi said; it costs a little bit more, not by much though, and personally I'm very happy with our choice.

    Hope that helps.

  12. Hi Tom,please take a look at the news clipping forum and confirm if the any of the lady's involved is one of the pick pocket's from this topic.Anyway good riddance of scum.

I presume you are referring to; Three Baht Bus Pickpockets Detained By Danish Tourist.

It's hard to say from the pictures displayed as they are so small, but reading the news article on Pattaya One News online, the ages of these pickpockets don't match the ones reported in the Pattaya Mail article who are definitely the pickpockets we encountered.

  13. There are many such gangs robbing on baht buses .Every pattaya resident should be aware of the danger by now ,but i feel sorry for tourists .

I was on a couple of Baht taxis tonight and noticed pickpocket warning stickers that were displayed. At least some effort in warning tourists.

  14. ... Well I suspected as much...

What do you want? That the police mount up in a couple of cruisers and roll out with cameras while inviting you along for your personal satisfaction?......

NanLaew; If only you had read it all in a non-criticising manor as an information update only as intended, but instead you read it with a 'glass half empty' attitude. My intent was just a follow on update, not criticism.

  15. Thanks for the info, I'll give that a visit sometime.

By the way, this week I noticed an Indian shop has started up in the food court of Carrefour, the prices were a bit more than other food shops though, but that maybe reflects what they are serving. I didn't try anything, but might do next visit.
