  1. I put a question to some university students I was teaching the other day about the number of crashes that keep occurring on buses asking them how they felt about it especially night buses travelling down to Bangkok. The replies I got back were pretty much all the same with them saying they are scared sometimes but to minimise the probability of death in the event of a crash they always sat in the middle of the bus. That was it! Fantastic...

  2. Quote from the OP:

I told them all they were disgusting and should be ashamed when disrespecting other similarly aged people of the same race,

Do you want to explain this comment? If people are black, would it be OK to disrespect them? What are you trying to say here?

I was of the impression the queue list was long gone and you now had to line up to get a queue number to be called up to get a queue number.

What on earth have black people got to do with this??? The race comment was aimed at the people from the English, American and Japanese race of people, colour was not even mentioned for all you know some of the people could have been black, yellow or green (it doesn't matter), it is the simple fact that the three races of people who chose to try and queue jump are from countries were politeness and good manners are regarded as being common place.

Even if the list is there or not why should a 65 year old push in front of another 65 year who is little more frail than the other when one has been waiting for nearly 2 hours longer than the other.

  3. Hope you feel better now.

You're right in your concerns about decorum, but wrong in showing up early to do a 90 day report. Best to let the morning scrum of people seeking visa extensions get resolved and come in after 9:30 am -- by most reports, mid-afternoon is the best.

People act this way because there is a very finite number of queue tickets for long-term visa extensions and they want to be sure to get one. People can be very ugly when competing for a scarce commodity. The supply of 90-day report tickets is almost unlimited -- why get in the way of others by coming early?

I teach so its the only time I can go, I would love to go at 3.30pm and turn it all around within 10 minutes but just not possible unfortunately : (

you wouldn't catch me dead reporting in my free time if i could do it on my employers, that said, you can report by mail, so who is the fool?

Well Mr twominutesbuddy, its certainly not me because if you knew what you were talking about you would know you can no longer report by mail.

  4. Why should that they are same or different race make a difference. Third post recently I've read that seemed to be lacking a decorum, politeness and manners when dealing with race.

It matters because the people who took advantage were English, Japanese and American people who are all races of people and are normally renowned for their politeness. That's why I referenced the word 'race'.

  6. Oh the list... the list... the list... went for 90 day reporting this morning and their was the list. Signed my name (no. 28) (arrived at 6.30am prompt - to be in the top 10 you had to have been there well before 5.45am!!!). Now I consider myself reasonably young at 40 and when I look around most the gentleman waiting around me must have at least another 20 years on me (in most cases - sorry!) so why as time ticks by and you get to about 7.00-7.30ish do the late arrivers waltz in only to expect to push right in at the front of the queue??? These are people from a different generation to myself, a time when manners, politeness and order meant more than they do nowadays and yet that seems to go out of the window when it comes to getting the golden ticket at 8.00 o'clock...

Did something I've always wanted to do but never had the <deleted> to, I told them all they were disgusting and should be ashamed when disrespecting other similarly aged people of the same race, what's that all about??? Didn't seem to do any good but some of the people who had been their since 5 did thank me, but come on I know they don't have adequate facilities at Chiang Mai but that's once you get through the door but as supposedly developed adults and humans you would think a bit of decorum could prevail. RANT OVER.

  7. Never had it from any other place I've ever eaten in Thailand over the last 10 yrs only MK, think it must be a Scottish thing (as I'm that tight) maybe its my inner reflexes twitching at a 500bt bill instead of the usual 60 bt for two???

  8. I drove the new one; very nice car indeed. Doesn't really feel like a small car at all.

Without being too trainspotterish about it with a 1.5 twin cam 16v in a car that weighs bearly a 1000kg I hope it has a bit of pep as well

  9. After trawling around nearly every garage over the past month within a 5 km radius of CM with my girlfriend looking for a cheap little car to buy I would just like to report on what I think is a good deal to be had at the moment...

Firstly I read with many posts about the most friendliest garages and made special efforts to check those places out first (with mixed responses), most of the Honda dealers think they're doing you a favour selling you a car! When you can get one of the hi-so girls that adorn their showrooms to stop playing on their iPhone 5 or iPad when you utter that you are looking at a Brio (circa 430k) they lose interest faster in you than a Bangkok hooker when she sees you've just blown your last 1,000bt bill (only joking about that bit) but you get the idea. Mazda were pretty good but hats off to Toyota, the two branches that went that extra mile were the one next to Honda Big Wing close to Tha Phae Gate and where we've actually bought the car from is the massive dealer close to the Robinson on the right hand side as you go from the city.

Because a new Yaris is coming out in 3 months they seem to be trying to shift the old shape, the list price of the base model is 555,000bt which they are willing to knock 30k of straight away OR recover seat in leather, fit body kit, side cill strips, exhaust cover, car cover, mats, boot tray, 1 yrs insurance, window film the list goes on, but they're keen as mustard!

The sales woman was on top of her game (she knew how to sell and wanted to sell... now!). When we first went in their was a farang having a great argument with the reception desk about shoddy service etc... and gave me a look so not sure if things go down hill after you buy but hey praise where praise is due, top marks for a garage that actually treated you like they wanted your money... well done!

  10. Just a quick one... only lived here 7 months... paid second visit today to MK Restaurant... (delicious) BUT 2 hours later, mouth as a dry as a tram drivers glove, head in a vice feeling. I'm no Dot Cotton... checked MK website and they swear by the fact they don't use MSG but jeez, really?... anyone else have this experience or am I just weird???

  11. If they use the word "Teacher" they MUST attach a copy of the University Degree and translated transcripts AND a Police clearance check. They are correct, a consultant or Assistant would be easier...

That statement is completely untrue. I government school can get you a work permit/visa even if you don't have a degree, by simply telling the local education department that they (the school) need to employ you as they don't have the money with which to employ a qualified teacher. The education department will then allow the school to issue exemption documents which will be accepted by both the labour department and immigration. A person employed as a consultant (I presume educational consultant) will need a lot more paperwork and qualifications than a teacher plus, will need to earn at least 50,000 baht and pay tax at the going rate and not at the reduced rate given to teachers.

That is incorrect. For teaching at a government school you need a teaching license or a waiver and for that you now definitely need a degree or you will not get a waiver/teaching license. Without that you will not get a WP and no extension of stay from immigration.

It might be that old cases are grandfathered in that they will get a waiver of the teaching license without a degree, I am not sure about that, but I know that for old cases the TOIC test for non-native speakers is not really required.

Thanks for the advice everyone, although conflicting this exactly what I am reading and hearing first hand.

I am going to go to chuck myself into the lions den and pay a visit to the labour dept. and ask them directly without mentioning the the different scenarios. I think best to say that the school will be employing me as an assistant and what paperwork do I need and would they foresee any potential problems of obtaining the required visa to be able to work here.

    Thanks again.

  12. If this topic has already been started, apologies in advance and if someone could redirect me to that post : )

I am on an Education Visa but I have been offered a teaching position at a Government School, BUT they want to pay me under the table, they will provide me with a contract but nothing else (by the way I do not have a degree only a TEFL Certificate).

I have heard that it would actually be easy for them to assist with me getting a work permit (and then the appropriate visa) IF they either put on the contract that I am a 'consultant' or and 'assistant' to the school and not mention the word teacher.

I know this a tiny loop hole that I am trying to squeeze through but does anyone have an experience of this.

    Thanking you.

  13. Hi does anyone know a good place to watch F1, I've tried UN Irish Bar which was ok but lacking a bit in atmosphere looking for somewhere where die hard fans perhaps frequent and perhaps somewhere that doesn't mix footie with F1 (maybe that's asking a bit too much)?

    Thanks.

  14. Hi does anyone know a good garage with people that know their stuff about suspension in or around Chiang Mai.

    I want to buy a coil-overs set up for a pick-up.

I see lots of locals that have done the same and I am sure that they have not all just cut down springs (or maybe they have???).

Any help would be greatly received.

    Cheers
