  1. I'd like to stay 9 months in Thailand :D

I have a triple entry visa.

The guy at the consulate in Milan told me I cannot use it for a 9 month stay in Thailand as I planned :including the extensions "2+1,2+1,2+1"(total 9 months).

Instead he told me I have to do it this way :

    -2 months> visa run>back to Thailand.

    -2 months> extension 1 month> visa run>back to Thailand.

    -2 months> extension 1 month> visa run>back to Thailand.

-1 month (regular 30 days permission to stay for Italian people), go back to Italy.(total 9 months)

When I asked why I cannot apply for an extension after the first 2 months, he told me because , this way my triple entry will be expired before I can use the third entry :D

Hmmm is this your experience with a triple entry?

I found it really weird, I'd really like to avoid that trip to a border after 8 months, just to stay another month

Last time I used a double entry and asked for an extension after the first 2 months and everything went OK (total 6 months)

really confused, need to drink another Chang to clear my mind :o

    Your help really appreciated!

    Ciao

  2. He cited whale hunting and restaurants serving wild animal meats such as the Carnivore in Kenya.

Um, Carnivore is a stand-alone restaurant and always has been. Not within a zoo or connected to a wildlife park! How can Old Ploddy possibly compare the two? It would be a bit macabre to view young lions and giraffes cavorting about only to be able to dine on them later...

next move is birdwatching sessions on Doi Inthanon in the morning and free hunting lessons in the afternoon :o

  3. Curious if anyone on here has tried to use sites like sologig.com or elance.com to pick up freelance projects from Thailand... if so can you tell me your experiences? I wouldn't mind picking up an occasional extra project, but am reluctant to pay their fees if there aren't any real legitimate jobs posted on their sites....

rentacoder.com has a huge market, the only problem is you have to "fight" with a lot of people from India,Romania,Urss to get the job. They are very professional and due to their economy they work for peanuts compared to western standard.

I'm also tempted to try, the secret is to accept a few jobs and build your reputation on good results, when you are well known by the community, you can ask for a proper amount of money, but as anything it takes time and hardwork.

    well just my 2 satangs

    ciao

  4. Why do you have shared files, if you only have one machine?

    Turn off those shares, immediately.

You may also be able to snoop into the files on the other machines.  :D

herr , actually i wrote I have another laptop (I use them both to trade US futures) and that's why I want to share files.

Anyway I just put my laptops in trusted zone(zone alarm setting) and now they can share with no intrusion.

Only their IP's are allowed to pass the firewall.

Snooping on other machines? naaaa I'm not a bad guy :o:D

  5. thanks bangbuathong for your help, i'll set zone alarm as you said(and I'll read carefully  the help once for all).

So basically the others workgroups listed in "Microsoft Windows Network" are just PCs connected to the same LAN and they cant' access my HD?

ok I'll try and see what happens.

    thx again!

if you have your computer setup for networking to share files and printers then other computers within the same workgroup should be able to acces your files

yes , you confirmed my suspect.

I didn't think of changing my setting which was suited for a connection via adsl modem at my home.

    Stupid, stupid ,stupid

Thanks a lot for your help

  6. thanks bangbuathong for your help, i'll set zone alarm as you said(and I'll read carefully the help once for all).

  7. I just moved in a building in CM, which offers internet access in my room through a LAN.

I plug one cable end into the ethernet socket of my Laptop and the other end into the socket on the wall, and I'm ready to surf.

    I use Zone Alarm

Now what happens really worries me.

If I check the "Microsoft Windows Network" I can see 3 different workgroups:

    -Mshome

    -Arbeitsgruppe(sounds German to me)

    -Workgroup

If I try to click on these icons I can only acces the workgroup I created previously(Mshome) as expected(i guess), but what worries me even more is that i can see 2 unknow computers in Mshome(my workgroup!).

Is this usual when you share an internet connection through a LAN or it rappresents some sort of breach in my system?

I have another laptop that I use to create a small network through a cross cable(i think that's what it's called). Usually I share some folder between the two laptops.

Does this mean the unknow PC's I found in Mshome can access my shared folders?

As you can see I'm really ignorant about this topic and I'm freaking out , really need help.

    TIA

  8. Whimsy, thanks for that additional info - starts to tie in a bit better with what I'd had said to me by someone I asked to check it for me......

I don't have a problem giving them a deposit for rent. services etc - as long as I know I'll get it back the day I leave. But I'm not keen on that kind of small print - I hope it's something that they make very clear at the time of booking.  :D

Do they have contracts printed in English?

Hehe, that's a good thing. You know, I just signed a three months contract and everythings written in Thai.

I hope I didn't give away all my possesions :o

Got to learn quickly to read Thai (geez, I can tell you it was easier to learn C++)

At least they warned me about the "minimum 3 months stay" policy.

  9. oh and when you enter Myanmar remember to give your passport to the Burma's officers (they don't give a rat to ask you for it)... or you'll have to go back to the mkt and try again to kill 30mins like an idiot... herm.

And they accept 250 bahts, instead of a 5 dollars note...well, till 3 days ago.

  10. So what? Sorry for the bad adventure man, but this stuff is nothing compared to what happens where I come from.

You cannot even walk safe at noon in downtown, and I'm talking about North Italy here not Mexico

Really this place is freaking safe compared to 95% of the rest of the world.

Sorry for the miss, she must have passed 2 shitty minutes.

  11. Hmm sorry, this is going to show all my ignorance about the city, but after a couple of months, this place is really growing in me.

I like it a lot, and...geez... yes now I even think it's beautiful (harmonica , go on and kick my @ss :D ).

But I still have to develop a network of friends and I'm single (so no thai girl to give me a direction), and to me it's a little difficult to find interesting news about the city, I'd like to dig a little bit under the surface.

Is there a way to do that, I mean newspapers, books, websites, anything to help me develop an understanding of the dynamics of the city ( gosh, look what i just wrote...).

    Any advice is really apreciated

(by the way TV is great, but I need mooore :o )

    Thanks

just found city-life web site, seems interesting, going to read it

    bye

  12. Lanna 3 Huay Kaew Rd.

Great view of the mountain, great position for restaurants near CMU, professional security, helpful front desk etc

Drawback is that the larger condos are in great demand and there's usually a waiting list.

Yes no easy to get a room there, last time I checked (1-2 months ago) there was only 1 room available , but no AC, and they only accepted a 3 months contract.

It seems they really have demands for their rooms, must be good...

The area is great , well at least to me. I can take my motorbike, my laptop and in 20 minutes I'm working on the top of DoiSuthep with fresh air and a great view. (I'm staiyng on the other side of the road at Lanna2,same management, but different level.

Not what you are looking for... but cheap eheh :o )

  13. Shoot! They ain't gonna catch me, I won't miss my daily walk down town.

Look at my avatar, just bought it yesterday... :D

Ahaaa!!! who's the loser now?!! ah :D:D:D

    :o

edit : loser with one O ...you jerk!

  14. Hey ProThaiExpat, thanks for the compliments to my country, yes often when I tell someone where i come from, (by the way I'm from Bologna...,nice city, best food in the world, beautiful women)they ask me what the h*ll I'm doing here.

    Well ..not sure yet... rofl.

Mmmh Italian kanom pan, I'm just craving for a good slice of real bread , I guess you'll have to send me a PM with the address or name of this guy or I'm gonna cry . PLLLEAASSEEE :D

Good to know I'm doing fine renting the MBK.

Well I'm not here to bash DoiView nor I'm a spoiled guy, but the reality is that once you've seen the pictures on their website, your expectations are really different from what you find there.

I don't know when they took those pictures, must be the climate, the cheap painting, I don't know really... I hate to contraddict the poster who took his time to suggest the place, I bet things where different when he was staying there.

Yes I know maintenance has really a different meaning here, generally only the big companies seem to have funds to take care of their buildings.

I still have to decide where to settle here in Thailand (that's why I'm travelling all around) ,Chiang Mai Looks like a good candidate so far.

Thanks for your advice about the low season etc. I think it's very smart and useful to anyone who reads this thread

Sorry I realize the post is getting a bit to much personal for a forum, but I'm fresh here so I'm forgiven uh? :o

    Ciao

  15. Buongiorno a tutti!

I've been here in CM for a week and I had contrasting impressions of the city.

Well the smog, it's been repeated here a million times so it s not a first right?

    Ok,my eyes agree.

The look of the city.... ahem, I think when someone says it's a beautifull city, he means good, but he's speaking with a Thai point of view, cause let's be honest here, we are here for a multitude of different reasons , but aesthetic of the cities is not the first of the list right?

Well, compared to others cities of Thailand i must admit is ... decent hehe really.

But when you take your motorbike or car or whatever... and go a little bit outside the city, man! I feel like I'm a little kid again.

Thanks god i wear my helmet cause my jaw would drop against the floor so hard.

What a magnificent nature, wonderful people, they seem just jumped out from a cartoon, cause they can't be real, can they?, I 've seen things no human...bla bla., my heart is so big and I have butterflies in my stomach.

Tears down my face, is it the wind? :o

And the people in town is really friendly, I was at the waterfall next to the zoo and a group of young guys wanted me to drink with them and offered me a bottle of cold beer, NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE ( never happened in my life in ITALY).

Or the guy who wanted to know all about my life at the traffic light (HEHE crazy guy)

Or wandering around the city looking for a house, I recieved only big big smiles from the people living there, you know the real not interested smiles ( you can recognize them after you are in Thailand for a while i think.)

And on and on, really different from BKK or Samui or Krabi etc.

I feel accepted and really no dirty look in my direction and thats a BIIIIG plus to me.

Try to stay in Chaweng for a month (Samui) and you'll know what I mean, they are letterally fed up with Farangs , and I understand them.

And the river in the evening (and with a lot of mosquitos repellent) is so beautifull and pittoresque, I want a woman just to go there :D

And the "bars" scene is so small that I can avoid it completely, again try to do that in some places with beaches around Thailand ...

And what about the old lady who asked me how much I was paying for my rent and when I told her, she promptly informed me she has a room and will let me pay her 5 times what i'm paying now. What an angel :D oh yes 400 a day but just 15000 a month, she was good at math as well :D

Well after a week I think it's not bad at all and if you like Wats..hehe welcome to your Disneyland

  16. Hi there, since this thread has been so helpful for me , I thought I can add my two Liras ( oh yes by the way, I'm from Italy, 36 yo, so please excuse my stinky English :D ).

Tawan court was very good as a base to search for a long term rent around the city, though it's 600 bath a day now.

I was able to rent a brand new honda for 2300 bahts a month ( ok I'm sure you can find a better deal around, my skill are not so good when it comes to haggle, geez i have a soft hart :D )

    Now the bad news...

Doi View seemed my best choice, 'cause wireless internet is a big plus to me, but... oh boy ! I was so disappointed with the place. First of all the "basic" room now is 8500 bath a month , not 7500 as stated in their web site. (told them to update it. With a big smile and the look as an answer...hihi..you know the look right?)

Now the room showed to me was not worth the money they were asking.

The furniture is all scratched and looks very old , I mean it's been used by a gang of teenagers or what?

Internet is another 1500 a month...yea sure, do you want me to bend at 90 degrees?

The facade is dirty, though this seems to be a general issue all around the city... too bad.

So i went to Lanna 3 to have a look, same story, don't be fooled by the pictures, GO AND HAVE A LOOK before making a reservation.

I went to a couple of others places but was not really satisfied. I mean ,I'm not looking for the moon, but I give value to my money and I expect to recieve the right service for the right money.

So in the end I went to a shitty place were I pay 3600 bath a month with hot water a tube and AE, well at least it's worth the money :o

Now why this little voice in my head keeps telling me KEE NEAOWWWW!!!

    What does it mean??

    Saluti

oh I forgot to tell you, Chiang mai n.1 in my list and I've been in Thailand for 6 months now, so I'm a newbee, but I learn fast. :D

    Laeo jer kan na khrap!
