  1. Slightly off topic but surly related...........

I am more than a little frosted that less than six months ago I bought a "real" copy of windows 7 pro and MS office for my ASUS laptop. I paid roughly 9,000k for these. Now, of course, MS has came out and said that they are no longer going to be supporting windows 7 and thereby forcing us all to transition over to windows 8.0.

My question is this, how long do we truly have before security is an issue for using windows 7.0? Hell, that was my number one reason for upgrading to a "real" copy of windows. So that I could maintain the upgrades and maintain some sort of internet security for online banking.

On topic question I think as anyone planning on buying a new laptop should at least (I think) be asking this same question...............

Advice truly and greatly appreciated. And yeah, I am still a little pissed over buying this to then find out shortly it would no longer be supported as Bill Gates needs to restock his treasure chests. . Fricken MS...........................................................

Whenever I see Bill Gates getting attaboys for donating money to charity, and he and his foundation do donate millions, I think Good For Him........... It is not his money he is donating, it is ours.

  2. The ASEAN, AEC, I guess to me means that the top feeders want to get more from the bottom feeders. As always, it is always going to be about money and about who gets what portion of it. The bottom line is it will always add up to 100% of whatever it is you are trading. It is just a matter of who gets what percentage of it, and and from whom do they get it. So, some countries are going to do better, others are going to do worse. It is one of those "only the strong survive" type of economic "long game" situations. It is not a "win, win" situation at all. Yeah their are those "win win" situations out there but this sure as hell is not one of them. In this case, there are going to be big winners, and big losers.

In the more global picture to me this would then mean that Thailand had best "first get" and then have their game face on or they are going to get their arse kicked. This is not some fly by night flash in the pants gig. It has huge long term implications for each countries economic health and trade across borders in the years ahead and for generations to come.

I love Thailand. Love the country, love the people. I have spent enough time in all our neighbors countries to state that for me, Thailand has been and is my choice for a great place to live for me and my Thai Family. I am though a little pissed to think that the "culture of doing business in Thailand" would allow the country to fall to the weigh-side as others with more common sense climb on board and overtake Thailand in its standard of living index in SEA.

  3. Life is Short......................

This is not a dress Rehearsal....................

I suggest this on a global scale, not just Thailand. Thailand and Thai girls in general get a raw deal in the lets crap on them category. So forget about that, Pick a country, any country, "same same but different". as the Thai's love to say..................

Meaning I plan on living to 104 but I would not put up with this for more than five minutes, maybe the second, not the first time, but the five minute rule would then apply.

I sincerely wish you all the best.............

  4. We are not far removed from cavemen. Eat more berries and vegetables. period. The three liter of water a day reply was also spot on but

they did not have any refined foods back in the day so that and water should be your focus.

Also, for me, with my Issan Cooking Thai wife, this is never a problem. Based on this my own research would suggest that you try living on Issan Thai food for a few days. If that does not clean you out. Well, you must be already dead..................... End of Story........... :)

On a more serious note. Well, there is none, other than good luck.................

  5. This just may be the best light hearted yet useful, (meaning great info exchange) topic I have read in some time. I gotta say, some of you guys, or gals, have a quick wit and great sense of humor. Busted my gut on the initial post of 365 liters a year as there is of course 365 weeks a year :) all the way to the current "take the horse to water and hope it drinks" comment. Good luck with that by the way. :)

Great Stuff and not a bit of bashing towards anyone, well, not serious bashing anyway. Great bit of humor though.

As for me, I am not a big fan of deep fat frying for anything. Looooove the taste, just lived enough hard years to try and do a better job of taking care of this old dent up body. I also dislike palm oil in general as it flat out is not a real healthy oil.

I honest to God have applied very little to my wife's outlook on life other than this one topic. Meaning, as I have noted before, I have much more to learn from her than she does from me.

The one thing I have asked, and she has complied with is the zero tolerance rule on oils. I bought us two 1 liter jugs of extra virgin olive oil, one full strength, and one light. This was close to three years ago, and we have used nothing but this, no, not the same bottles, ever since. I asked that she simply replace the palm oil with this. No, it does not taste as good in some things as other oils but my Issan country wife puts the Thai Pepper heat to everything she cooks, and she is a good cook, to the point that I cannot taste the oil anyway....................................

    Back to the Banter Boys

  6. This thing sounds beautiful. If possible could you pm me a few pics, both inside and outside views. I am dead serious. Someday I may want to design and build something similar. Sounds like you knew exactly what you were doing and that you spent the extra for quality materials.

    Best Regards

PS, not think this is off topic as the member that posted wanted advice, not that he seems to take any of it very well but he has been given some great advice.

Interesting as a single person / couple home, I'm going to throw in a few 'buts' here.

Your first issue will be keeping that massive interconnected volume cool without getting hotspots on the upper level. $$$ in energy consumption sad.png

What about cooking smells in the living/work area, I really love my wife's cooking but I don't want to smell it in my office area.

The walls in a standard Thai structure are not load bearing and are cheap and quick to put up and (if necessary) take down. The money is in the post and beam structural elements, I don't think you'll save 'big bucks' by leaving walls out.

Leaving out part of the upper floor will save some cash, but it removes a considerable floor area too.

Just a few things to think about.

As to cost, I'll leave that to the construction experts.

Loft properties make fantastic homes I no longer own one however my property here in Thailand is very open plan for example in my very large lounge area which is apprx 75sq mtr I have a fitted European kitchen and off that is an office and coming of the office is a half bathroom ( toilet&washbowl) I am then left with a dining area and a large lounge area I have no problems with food smell as I had installed a proper European extractor hood which extracts food smells out of the building on top of this I had incorporated an extractor fan in the bathroom for any unpleasant oders, above this room is the master bedroom yes 75 sq mtr I access that from the 3 metre wide undercover terrace by way of a granite staircase no problem in the rainy season as such is the design the whole area is under cover if and when you build your property make sure you build it where you can benefit from good wind flow to ensure you get good free ventilation and one thing I have noticed with a lot of farang houses is the lack of undercover terrace or overhangs by doing this you will keep the heat of the sun away from your main living space especially if you have a lot of glass like I have . Build costs vary around Thailand I live on an island so transportation comes into the cost factor . my build cost was 30,000 per sq mtr but it is of a very high standard all the teak is mature aged teak and all window / doors are of brushed steel with double glazing it is not the typical Thai property ! Good luck with your venture!!
  7. I would suggest that more than likely we are never going to know just <deleted> happened to those poor people on board.

Remember the old quote, cannot remember from where or whom it came. "Believe nothing that you hear, and only half of what you see".

Well, for countless different reasons this could most likely play out as one of these. Meaning it is right now one big ongoing well orchestrated "circle jerk" Where the media is being hand fed everything that is then hand fed to us.

Why, countless reasons. High on the list is that it was hijacked and flown somewhere, but they do know why, and exactly where it is. Once there is enough cirlcle jerking that the governments involved with the cover up feel we are all worn down by it all they will then come up with debris and that "the plane" will then be discovered in some desolate area in the ocean.

Is it though truly the real plane with the people on board? Or was that plane flown elsewhere?.............. It would be pretty easy to sink one and declare it "the plane".

This by the way does not come from me. It comes from the opinion of a retired commercial pilot with 40 years experience that I spent the afternoon with this past week. He flat out states, it cannot go down without the "eye in the sky", call it big brother, or whatever you want, but no plane this big can simply disappear, unless "someone (insert government of your choice) wanted it to"......................... What my friend states is logical. He asks, why would hijackers take it just to crash it out in the middle of nowhere................ He says this thing stinks to high heaven of a cover up.................

Meanwhile, sadly, (while I pray that it is truly found) the truth may never be known.

  8. I sow anything I feel like all the year round. In the dry season we seem to have less problems with pests. Planting just before the rainy season is obviously making things easier.

We water young seedlings twice a day, mature plants every day or two days. Chilli will appreciate the heat, and will survive without too much water... I had to find out the hard way, despite receiving excellent advice on this forum, there are so many differences in soil and climate, that it is difficult to apply general 'planting time rules' to gardens in Thailand.

However if you don't want to water regularly, I don't think you will have much success.

    Cooked,

Great User Name, smile.png , also, great Info.

When you state you plant/sow year round, does that apply to as you note "anything". I truly am striving myself also to figure out what grows best during what time of the year. Back in the states in the Pacific NW, right on the Canadian border, we had four distinct seasons. Here, well, hot, hotter, and hot and wet. Not complaining, just trying to come to terms with the difference. It was easy back in states, when the ground stopped freezing you could plant. You then harvested before it started freezing again in the fall.

I guess I am getting long winded and the question is simple. Hot and wet season is coming. (monsoon season). I live S of Bangkok towards Cha Am, so we do not get as much rain as others N or S. I have a small city plot garden. I just harvested corn, carrots, tomatoes, peppers and misc others such as kale and lettuce. Now that we are headed into the hot and wet season, would you say go ahead and plant everything again. Or, are there some that are going to do far better than others. The reason I ask is that I am trying to focus on those that have a better chance of "doing good" during the hot and wet season.

    Thanks Man

Well to start with, I live in Isaan, often when I go to Bangkok I find that it has been raining for days when up here we haven't seen a drop.

The beginning of the rainy season is generally thought to be the best time of year to sow most stuff, I realise that you have a problem getting used to the idea of a tropical climate. At the beginning I certainly was, without realising it, putting things off for the winter time. Switzerland, where I come from, definitely has seasons, and you can't afford to miss certain sowing dates.

I still think that the best way is just to sow stuff that takes your fancy, you may find yourself obliged to decide between using pesticides or not. I am continually cultivating yard long beans and cucumbers to keep up a steady supply, same for herbs. I have found that if it is difficult to find certain seeds in the shops, it is likely to be because they don't grow well, I have stopped importing stuff from Europe, although the F1 Sunflowers are worthwhile, and get eaten eventually.

I gave up on melons some time ago, I don't want to eat stuff that has been sprayed every week. Pumpkins grow all over the place and try to take over the garden, we still have seedlings coming up all over the place a year later.

Ok a list: garlic, bunching onions, chives, onions, basil, dill, tomatoes, bell peppers, two different beans, cucumbers and sweet corn, lettuce, and chinese cabbage. We also have passion fruit growing all over the place, pappaya and other stuff that my wife knows the name of..

    Good luck

    Thanks for the great info.

The area I am in does get quite a bit less rainfall than others also. Having said that, it also is a bit warmer year around than it is in Issan country, so you get less rain, plus its a little cooler month to month (I think. My wifes from a small village outside of Mukdahan and we go up there quite a bit to visit family.( Being an ex farm boy myself, I love it up there. Beautiful country)

So, Bottom line., I am going to Rock and Roll, meaning do as you do and just start planting again. Great list you have and pretty much the same for me................. Flat out blew my mind how well our climbing large cucumbers and runner beans did these past three months. We only had about eight plants of each and flat out fed half the neighborhood for several months. I am now going to be on "fourth" generation tomatoes and thai chili peppers now due to self seeding and germination from the last crop's. I like to call it "only the strong survive". Me and my wife both get a kick out of this approach as we simply pull out the plants when they have run their course, and at about the same time, start thinning out the self seeded new crop that has already started to pop up. Great Fun.

Thanks Again for the Info as I was thinking about sitting out the "rain season" we do not get to much but when we do, holly shit, it flat out turns the entire yard into a rice field that is six inches under water. :))

  9. I can only wish you the best of luck other than to try and heed the advice of those cautioning you about heading into this with no experience on either building or supervising. I would try very hard to bring someone on board that has the experience and that can be trusted. How you do that, I leave up to others as I am still not clear on that, but I am sure it is possible.

As an ex Builder and Supervisor of many back in another lifetime, I have read many a thread on TV about the headaches involved with building a home in Thailand. Someday I may do the same as you are planning on doing. But to tell you the truth, it scares even me to think of the headaches involved. If approached and done right, building a home can be a very rewarding experience, it can also be the nightmare from hell if it is not. And yes, this can be true in many countries but it is one of those things that is even more relevant to undertaking it in the LOS I suspect from what I have read and seen over the past three years.

One of my hobbies in fact is driving around on my bike just to find and then watch and track progress on others projects similar to this. I quite simply spent the first year being "stunned" as to what was "normal" but that in itself makes for great entertainment. I had a lot to learn, I still have a lot to learn, but all I have learned so far is that "wow", I cannot believe what they call acceptable building practices in this country.

Structural, Yeah, you best be on it or you are going to end up with worm holed structural beams as it was pouring down rain the entire time they were building them and the structural integrity is crap. Then, add on the Elec, plumbing, and as noted, you simply must have someone on site that knows what is going on. Yes, this could be the Contractor himself but most of the good ones are doing more than one project at a time so it is put on a "field supervisor", if there even is one. So you truly need to know who you are dealing with. And you quite simply MUST KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON...............

Yes, it has and can be done with great results but from what I have read on TV, only if you are micro managing the project to death. Meaning knowing what it going on and monitoring the project from ground zero each and every day.............

Having said that, I admire your spirit.................... Good luck and I wish you the best results.........

  11. My God..........

All swords have two sides........................... Meaning you best be careful what side of the bed you roll out of each day. As it seems to switch from day to day for some members.

End of the world for Thailand coming per some TV members.................... Meaning I suspect in the long run this is a minor event in the grand scheme of things and truly doubt the end of the world for Thailand as we know it.

Want China for my Bitc................... for others......................... Well, simply please move there and stop wasting my air as you are breathing far to much "free" air.

All because the US is trying to let Thailand handle this "small" issue (on a larger global approach to the world) without getting involved.

I would call that "Dammed if you do, dammed if you do not"....................... There, Done............................ My God.......................

Suggest you move to China and bend over, and then, for a bonus, do not bitc................. when it comes...................... lol

  12. Sad, very sad.

Yeah, could have used some solid CSEP training. Sad news, regardless of if they were Thai or Illegals, as some have stated. Reality is they did not know what the heck they were doing and are now dead. RIP to all of them as of course, they are unwarranted deaths.

Bottom line. Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air and is more than likely what did them in. Hydrogen Sulphide, is lighter than air, and sadly what they thought they could get rid of by simply letting it air out before they went in. In most deaths of this kind, sewer (hydrogen sulphide) gas gets the blame, and it is sadly a simple lack of oxygen, being that it is displaced by the carbon monoxide, that does them in. And no, you do not smell it, it is odorless, where the hydrogen sulphide, as others have stated has a rotten egg smell to it. .

  13. RE: I Think this was the Topic??

What foreigners dont get about Thai girls

Same as in any other country. Simple as that. For those that seem so confused here, and always going on about how "different" they are in so many ways. Heck, you must have been virgins when you got here.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Great book and yes, simple as that. At least for some of us. Yeah, I have read it, At one time many years ago I owned three copies. One I bought, two copies from ex girlfriends. Meaning they did not understand me, and I sure as heck was confused by them.

Yeah, you sure as heck can get screwed over by Thai girls, no, not different, or as the Thai T shirt states, "Same Same, But Different" as any other country.

Love my Thai Wife, confused at times, heck yeah, almost every day. Nothing to write home about though, or fill up a blog, and most cultural, meaning the problem is me understanding her, not her understanding me..................................................... But, maybe I am finally growing up as I strive every day to learn the culture, and from what I have seen in the past three years, it is very cool stuff if you spend the time striving to understand it............

As I have noted before, I have pretty much stopped trying to teach my wife "western" culture. I truly see no point. I love her Budda based peaceful Thai heart. I came here with an open mind. I have far more to learn than I have to "teach". In fact more and more I realize that in most cases all I am doing is setting myself up for causing a loss of face to someone I love and nothing to gain by it. Meaning I keep my "western" culture on a leash and try and give myself enough rope to pull in and learn the Thai Culture. To me, this is far more important and will reap me far more in the long run than trying to "westernize" my Thai wife. Why any of us would want to do that is totally beyond me......... Heck, not being westernized is one of the many things I love about her..........................................

  14. Good initial post scarpolo,

And a few good helpful reply's. Good luck with the visa. Sorry, that as more often than not, while you simply asked someone to stand up for Thai Girls/Women, it ends up being just another bashing....................... and God forbid, somehow someone even got to throw in a punch or two on the US Military going all the way back to the Vietnam war.

As for the Girls/Women, I lobby not a lot different than any other country. You get what you pay for. And "NO" this does not mean they have to or were a bar girl. Could have been, but not relevant. It simply implies that if you find a good one, and yes, there are many good ones out there, you must first be free emotionally to take risks, meaning trust her and fall for her completely, so she in turn can trust you enough to fall for you. Sad but true state of affairs is that without this commitment, a Thai Girl, (and I do not blame them) is never going to trust the Farang as they know to many Girls that were screwed over by them. As one member noted, and I agree, far more girls get screwed over by guys than guys get screwed over by girls.

As for the guy taking "pot shots" at the US Military from of course deep in his TV Bunker...... God I love these guys, Wonder what they would do if the Chinese came Knocking on their door. Oh Yeah, they would plead for the US to come help them...........................

All I can say is God Bless Those that Served in the US Military, in Vietnam or any other war, and God have mercy on those that have no concept of it........................ Funny how many older Farangs come up and thank the US Farang for liberating them from "their" occupied country from (pick a war) . And I suspect some would be turning over in their graves to know that their son or grandson's are now bashing the same US Military that freed them from the "Occupation".......... Some need to spend a little more time reading their history books on their own country. Just who the hell do they think came over and liberated them in WW2, "Ghost Busters" My God this shit burns on me............................................Nuff Said......

Funny how fast a good intention can go down the rat hole on this site.....................

Anyway, getting off topic, lol, not that that means anything here, wish you the best and pretty darn sure you will sort things out and be back. .

As for me, yeah, I know you already know. I am one of the luck ones.................. Love Thailand, Love the Culture, Sure as heck love my Wife............ As I have noted before, someday it may all go to sh........ on me but, well, that happens in any country, sure as heck not just Thailand....... Meanwhile, I plan on enjoying the ride, not finding some reason to bitch about it.........

  15. What farangs Know about Thai Women ( girls ), i's a joke. they know nothing !

God I hate to but I have to throw this out there again.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus............................ PERIOD...................................

Does not matter that the girls here are Thai, no more than it does that the ones from Hollywood are from Hollywood. Or the ones from Paris are from Paris.

To even suggest that you have some cosmic insight into what is or is not a joke, is a joke in itself as far as stating you understand "Thai" women. To even state this underscores the simplicity of the simplicity of the issue.

I am always at odds as to why some seem to think that "Thai Girls" are so much different than any other girls in the fricken world. Seems to me at times that they must have never got laid before they came to this country....................................... These Are Girls, no different than any other country. Treat them right, "sometimes" you will get this in return. Treat them wrong, well, then you are screwed.............................

Tough task for some.................... Do with your eyes closed for others........................................

We are to different species. End of story.........................

Yeah, I am just a simple guy, leading a simple life, not trying to complicate it to much by trying to understand things I am not capable of understanding............................

  16. Very sad but also could have happened in (pick your country). Not a Thai thing. Just a sad thing.

Only other thought, is to blame the girl, when a guy cannot handle being dumped, well, just does not make sense. PERIOD, no matter what or who she is. A guy killing another guy over a girl is just what it is. A guy killing a guy over a girl.

Not changed a lot over the last 10,000 years in any region or country I suspect............................... Stupid then, stupid now.

  17. Gosh Darn, I am glad that is cleared up...............................

Was actually feeling sorry for the "guy"...............................

Now that I know it is not, well, bottom line is that I feel one heck of a lot better. lol

And truly sorry to anyone that I may have offended.........Seems some a little "sensitive" in this area....................... Just saying as I am always one to ponder why?????..

All I can state is this "idjit" as mr, or maybe ms the intellectual wym refereed to me as, is quite happy to be who I am, where I am and what I am.

An Older dude blessed to be in Thailand with a younger beautiful, intelligent, funny and quick witted "Thai" wife.............. End of Story.........

There, now I will let you that seem to be obsessed with it get back to what you do best, Thai Girl bashing and Older Farang younger wife bashing........As Idjit, oops, sorry, Mr or Ms WYM stated, I "was getting off topic by trying to talk us into another direction away from bashing Thai Girls or Older Farangs,. God forbid, we not want any of that. So on with it.................

As for me, I am taking my toys and going home as I am both an older farang and happen to have a younger Thai wife................ :)))

  18. Oops,

Forgot to add: To the young buck that seems to be in love with himself and his pic of "someone' that he wants us to look at each day with each posting he makes....................... Yeah, right there that should tell you something................... lol

I have dated younger "women" my entire life. Why would I be any different in Thailand................ As for the poor guy that seems to think that any younger women wants only younger men......................... Got a wake up call for you............... Once again, pick any country, not just Thailand, and you will find a large group of younger women that want older fit men for a lot of reasons...................., Oh yeah, and being more experienced in the sack is definitely one of them.

There, enough said and sorry to burst Young Bucks bubble.................................................. Yeah, still need money but do not kid yourself young buck, if you did not have any you would not be getting any. Simple as that.................. No different than us older dudes............. Except that we have so much more to offer in other areas. And guess what, we are most likely more fit than you are so you can take your little self inflated ego and go back to your crib...................................

Match my mojo up with any young buck................. Esp one so insecure that he posts a stud muffin pic to reflect what he wants people to 'think he is". Or looks like.............................Just saying but real men do not post pics of themselves like that........ Its a Talk the Talk versus Walk the Walk thing................... lol.............

Oh yeah, and trust me, most "real women young and old (again, pick a country, not just Thailand) are going to look at it no different than I do............... There, enough said.......

  19. ...riiiiiighhht..

    Silly me.

Thanks for opening my eyes to that.

My naughty Thai female friends..there was me believing all along that they are happy with their young fit equally successful male partners..when they are off doing the dirty on them with old dudes.

    Tsk tsk!

    feel really foolish now.

    smile.png

I think you will find, their young fit Thai husbands are doing the dirty on them at every opportunity.

Seems only fair that your Thai female friends get the chance for same.

And really that sums up Thailand.

Nobody is faithful, everyone is cheating, all the time.

But nobody cares, Thailand is a country of sexual freedom.

You just have to make sure you get your turn too.

..and if those Thai female friends of mine are out having some fun on the side, they for sure wont be chosing some young hot guy ..no no..right...its old guys they prefer...

Actually starting to feel sorry for this guy. First, I am sure he has a self image problem. Why else would he have the pic he does reflecting "what he thinks is himself"............... Second, I think he has had a history of older guys doing boom boom with someone close to him. One heck of a lot of jealousy in his ongoing rants about "older guys" and "younger women" not wanting them............................. Does make one wonder...........

..and if those Thai female friends of mine are out having some fun on the side, they for sure wont be chosing some young hot guy ..no no..right...its old guys they prefer...

  21. Bottom line.

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.............................

Does not matter what country we, or they are from. This simple fact still applies...............

And to anyone that thinks Thai Women are money hungry, or only after your money, or would leave you if you did not have any money.............I say go back to your own planeet...........................I am not sure what planet you are from as I am from Mars.

Men from Mars understand that it does not matter what country the "Beautiful" girl is from. Women/Girls from Venus are simply not going to be attracted to you if you do not have any money. Again, being Thai has nothing to do with it.

Based on this simple logic. It truly does not make any sense to bash on Thai Women/Girls for leaving or not wanting to stay with you if you do not have any money or have blown it all. (Even if you did blow it all on booze and hookers)

I honestly never understand these threads when they head into this direction. Meaning (Thai Girls are only after money Thai Girl Bashing threads) I am sure as heck certain that in most western countries you first are going to have one heck of a time finding a women as beautiful both inside and out as a lot of Thai girls are. You then are absolutely dreaming if you think this western women is going to stick with you once the well runs dry. I Mean Come On Already.......................... It is not going to happen.

Long Story Short. Bottom line. It does not matter if they are from Thailand or (pick a country)

If you have not money, YOU GET NO HONEY!!!!

There, I am done and feel one heck of a lot better. And Yeah, I get Honey..................... :))
