    You wont like it here.

Its filthy, smogy, and filled w/ poisiness snakes. People are miserable unhappy and  poverty sticken. Wild Elephants run rampant at night killing hundreds each week. Its  hot and humid. Food is scarce and the water is undrinkable."law and order" are not words in their vocabulary.

Services like Electricity and Telephone are scnaty and unpredictable. The ferocious wild Tigers are protected by international treaties, so cant be delt with.

The good news is that I dont believe rumors that Osama Binladen is hiding here and we are subject to a full assult by US Marines at any moment.

Chiangmai? A virtual ###### on earth.

Now That I'm here I'm pulling up the draw bridge :o

  3. Lance now that sounds like the way to go, in comfort with a few drinks etc.

    skycop :o

Took the "Sprinter" train from Bang Sue (BKK) to Chiang Mai. Depart Bang Sue 0900; arrive Chiang Mai around 2000. One snack, meal, and two coffee/drink breaks provided. B511

Returned by 32 seat "VIP" bus. Departed Chiang mai at 2100, arrived Mo Chit, BKK next morning at 0630. Again a snack, coke and one coffee in the morning. Had a voucher for a bowl of noodles at a rest stop.  B403  Have heard good reports on the 24 seat Super VIP bus, worth a try.

  4. Today at Winn Dixie they had em for .29 cents per pound. They were all about 10 lbs. and costing under $4.00. Some kind of special...think the birds were on strike and got you know whacked.

    the sarge

Bought a Thai Turkey at Makro 4.2 kilos for 546 baht =130 baht a kilo.

Cooked it for around 2 hours and it was delicous no problems.

not greasy or dry. check em out :o

    Aroy!!

  5. I think i have that one, and Its a good film. i have about 200 or so dvds. Hard to keep track.

    the sarge :o

Speaking of Slim Pickens' movies - wasn't he the Air Force guy in the Peter Sellers movie about "Dr. Strangelove; and How I Learned to Love the Bomb" who rides the bomb down to the target bareback, waving a cowboy hat?

And didn't Ryan O'Neal father Tatum O'Neal, and didn't father and daughter play together in a movie as father and daughter?

And wasn't Ronald Reagan formerly married to the more famous movie star, Bonzo?

and the common link was each was having a love affair with the other.... Oh Doctor Strangelove ... indeed

  6. Great job with the pictures...

A couple of weeks ago in another thread I mentioned these delicious oranges from Burma, and periodically sold in Mae Sai, but still rare. Well, I found some few days ago. 35 baht per kilo (20 baht last year this time)

I think it's technically a tangerine because of the thick loose skin, but locally they're called "Som juud" which implies a lack of sweetness- certainly a misnomer in this case.

On the left is Som Juud. On the right is Som Sai Naam Pung (another tangerine, 15-35 per kilo in CM, 15 baht in Mai Sai)

(note the green leaf- most of the ones I saw for sale had this leaf attached.

    orange1.jpg

Both have relatively thick and loose skins, making them much easier to open than Som Kio Waan, in comparison ...

    orange2.jpg

I much prefer the Som Juud because it has few seeds, is nicely sweet and flavorable (In a taste-test with these two, the Som Juud was clearly sweeter and had more flavor than the Som Sai Naam Pung, but I think I might have picked a bad Som Sai Naam Pung this time) and it peels super easy and fast with one hand...

Also, in Chiang Saen, the Chinese apples are in abundance, along with Mali Waan and others.. Box prices (approx 8 kilos) run from 125-180 per box (around 4 baht each?), depending on your bargaining skills... Bargain hard, for with so many sellers there, they don't sell many boxes each. 10 boxes on a decent day I was told, though only 3 boxes for this particular seller by 4pm that day. I made her day by buying 35 boxes... :o

  7. Progressive I think refers to seeing thinking like a bifocal with out the lines. As you look in the middle or bottom of your glasses they get bigger. I do not personally like them.

You are talking about Photo Lens. I think..

Hello all.I will be arriving in C.Mai in May with my OA retirement visa in hand, the posts concerning condos, apartments, dental clinics, etc.have been very helpful.

Any suggestions on optical/eyeglass clinics?? Anyone have any experiences with getting "progressive" lenses fitted in CM?

(they're the lenses that darken automatically as they're exposed to sunlight) Thanx in advance, the Harpman.

  8. What about pollution there and hospital care.

    skycop :o

Have you thought about Chiang Rai ?

CM is a large city and is going to get a lot bigger if Taksin stays in power. He has big plans for his home town.

Only you know what is important to you so only you can make the  choice but CM has traffic problems which would delete it from my list

CR is small enough to enjoy but large enough to have the amenities that you require.

  9. :o Taking Your Life in "the drivers" hands.

    Not me...train or fly...

To many accidents..do not trust drivers..

Has anyone tried going from Bangkok to Chiangmai by bus? I have been told the trip takes about 15 hours. Is it worth it considering that I think about trying this trip not only to get to Chiangmai (which I can do by plane) but also to see a little bit more of Thailand? And how much would a ticket cost me?

  10. Got me thinking about this place

Maybe I had better think of somewhere else...

I have two wide windows with balconies overlooking Doi Southep, but visibility is poor.  I've noticed that if my shirt sleeve cuff is protruding from my jacket, it's soiled within 20 minutes (while riding on the superhighway).  Dust piles up inside the house even though we keep most of the windows shut.  Pollution everywhere.

  11. Do they serve drinks too.

    skycop :o

AA has its own clubhouse. Meetings are in House 11, behind the main hospital building. Meetings are daily at 9.30am and 6.30pm.

    aathailand.org

If you need help, you can call the Bangkok-based helpline at 02 231 8300 and they might be able to put you in touch with someone in CM.

  12. Rent a crew with Truck of course.

I am also looking to buy furniture for a new house of I have just built in Jontiem and will be using the information posted here,

My question is how easy would it be to get the furniture from chang mai to Jontiem?

    Thank you in advance

  13. Hello I too was thinking of shipping a few items but not for $7000, and I was just going to send a couch and a bar and a few more items. Might not even check now.

    skycop :o

Hi, getting ready for the big move, but just got our quote for shipping the furniture. Someone on this forum said a container to Thailand from UK could be got for as little as £300 so contacted a few companies and so far the cheapest we have found, door to door from Birmingham to Chaing Mai for 1 container is £3,960.00.  This has made us start to think about leaving everything here and buying new in Chiang Mai.

My main item is my beloved Toshiba 60" Rear Projection TV. Any idea how much this item would cost to buy in Chiang Mai? Also interested in an 8ft * 8ft projection screen. (I can bring the projector in my suitcase, it is small and light)

I saw one post that seemed to sugest that a bedroom could be furnished for about £150. My new home will have 1 lounge, 1 family room, 6 bedrooms, office, dinning room, kitchen etc. Any ideas how much it would cost to furnish this, excluding the air-con. I like English style soft 3 piece suites.

Trying to decide whether to ship averything or buy new. Also import duty. I know a returning Thai can bring in personel possesions Tax Free, but can only bring 1 TV etc. Is there an age limit to this. Because my wife can bring in the main TV but my son has his own TV in his bedroom. He is Thai and returning to Thailand. Can he bring in his stuff tax free as well? He is 10 years old. Also my daughter, born in the UK but holds a Thai passport. Can she bring in her TV etc?

Sorry for all the questions but this moveing thing is becoming a nightmare!

    Regards CHris

  14. My wife is Thai but now a American Citizen can we still get a break on shipping to LOS...

    Skycop

Until you have an O-A visa, or an extended O visa, there are zero concessions on  the importation of household goods.

This, unfortunately, is correct. OTH, you say 'we'.

If your wife is a returning Thai national the situation does look different, as she will be entitled to bring the goods in, under certain restrictions and conditions.

Customs clearance has to be done in the port of arrival, usually Bangkok or Laem

Cha Bang. After clearance onforwarding to CM by over land transportation.
