  1. patong or naiharn beach.. easy to pick up..

Can you teach me a pick up line which is effective with them?

On another note, working with Russian customers, I noticed often with couples that the guy speaks almost zilch English, but the lady a lot more. When Pjotr is drinking Vodka with his friends, Natasha is doing something more useful with her time: She is learning English.

  2. My hotel water comes from a deep well, depth is 19 meters. Before going into the tank which is directly connected with the hotel water system, the water goes through a carbon filter.I tell guests not to drink it, but brushing teeth is fine. It is inevitable that in places where the tap water might be not up to standard, you get minuscule quantities of it into your body, for instance through showering, and it wont impact your health.

My well water might be drinkable and I would like to have it tested. But reliably testing water is complicated and expensive, a number of separate tests have to be run, to check for chemical and microbiological contamination, traces of metals and so on

In for instance Ireland, you can have your own well water tested for 50 Euro or so, but this is heavily subsidized by the Health Ministry.

  3. Agree with what is stated above. You can comment on politics, express opinions and make jokes about it, but getting actively involved in politics such as joining a demonstration is a very big no no.

Never forget even if you are married to a Thai and have 12 half Thai children, speak the language fluently, and have a sucessfull business employing 250 Thais, you will always be considered a foreigner, and thus have no business getting involved in their political squabbles.

  4. What complete nonsense. No thought to driver education. The real problem here is driver inability to understand the mechanics of gear box use for braking. Really no hope.

Always using the brake when going downhill, the rubber around the brake disks will erode away, and at some point the disks will break. Easy to just use second gear, you go down slowly automatically, but true many Thai people don't know this.

  5. just get a licence 100baht.. hahah..

Yeah, every tourist should be at the licence department at 8.30 am on arrival.

Well worth it for a short holiday?

Easy, people riding a bike should have a bike license. A lot of them really have no clue about bike riding anyway and should not be riding one, they're endangering themselves and other road users.

True. Too many times, I rented out a bike to a tourist, and then saw him/her riding off very unsteadily, needing the full width of the road. Could be a solution to make the person renting out the bike partly responsible for damages.

  6. I would like to know why these JWs are racist.

Both times they visited, they didn't want to talk to my lady who answered the door (she speaks English), instead asked to see "The Farang"

Might not be racism, just a practical consideration. They assume that you as a farang just observe a wrong variety of Christianity, and are thus easier to be convinced of the truth than your lady, who is most likely Buddhist, and might tend to think Jesus died a horrible dead because he had been very bad in a previous life.

  7. Yeah, stop lights. One that has been bugging me for a long time is one I have to pass by on my way to paradise island, where the very busy Ranong-Phuket road meets the far less traveled Phangnga-Phuket road. The light turns green for about 10 seconds, before turning red for a long time to allow the trickle of traffic from Phangnga to pass through.

Why do it the easy way when you can also do it the hard way?

  8. I don't know about 'buzzing' - on the roads, a lot of idling is the term I'd use. But yes, it's busy - a tourist's haven (and an expat's nightmare). I'm sure you'll have a great time... thumbsup.gif

Since a lot of the expats are depending on tourism I don't think most expats will agree it is a nightmare.

Plus without the tourism, the expats wouldn't enjoy the shopping, dining and nightlife/entertainment options they have now.

  9. Ha Ha - ask anywhere about any bus service and you will be told - no bus, only taxi.

Exactly. I have seen many young couples traveling on a budget arriving by taxi in Khao Lak from Patong . They asked at the hotel or at a travel agency, who, it goes without saying, earn a commission this way.

  10. Six provinces warned to brace for serious sea water invasion next April

And people say Thais don't possess foresight. rolleyes.gif

Meaning there will be another flood, but starting with seawater this time,... whistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif Ploddi where are you now?

They are not talking about a flood, but about salt water getting into the soil in low laying coastal areas. In the Netherlands, they use enormous quantities of water to prevent this from happening.
