  1. ^ I rather think that is a little too pat an answer. I'd propose the amount of embarrassment is less than the result of appreciation that can be earned.

Running out of stomach for the fight before it even started.

The fight is against the working classes, not officials who pay up for their positions

The working classes lost the fight a long time ago. Maybe they should get back to working.

Well can't blame them for thinking they have a chance as that's the current propaganda, they matter. I'm sure they would love to get back to work, but the jobs were eliminated.

Interesting pic today in PW , mostly women it seems have been put out of jobs in the recent sterilization. Explains a lot. The new govt has already shown itself to not be interested particularly in giving women a say. One cabinet member out of what.. 30 is female.

  2. Yes, but, you could be posting something that is unknowingly false.

We know there are known knowns: there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns: that is to say we know there are things we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns the ones we don't know we don't know. As long as Somchai isn't parking over my spud patch I don't care, which presently is uknown. neus.gif

Regarding the recent developments, crackdowns of some and not others, some taxi stand OK others not... I wish I could say what I know, but to the skeptical reader, please look at some alternative sites not under control of MICT.

  3. OK here is the story of the arrest of this person. Seems he was Khmer.

"Summary: The 25-year-old cambodian, known only as Ping, was arrested today by police at Koh Lan, a popular day trip destination off Pattaya. He is being accused of intimidation and will almost certainly be deported once he has served a jail term, which could be as much as three years."

This happened almost a year ago, the man is wearing full facial covering, and we're now told who he is ( conveniently Cambodian)and that he will be prosecuted. Not buying it.

This chap just got off a more serious charge in order for a face saving maneuver. Ye ol' switcheroo.

  4. ^ Agreed. Before PW, PG was just a pulpy property pusher. It was forced to shape up.

While the retorts can be a pain, keeping in mind they are designed to get readers to return again and again, and the site can stretch the truth a bit for sensationalism- it is an asset to the community.

  5. There was an op-ed reprinted in BP last week about this law, the author pointed out while well meaning, it does very little for saving energy or the environment. He recommended, somewhat facetiously a ban on furniture as it is the real pollutant-rarely recycled, emits a lot of toxins in manufacturing, uses new wood sources and takes up a lot of landfill room.

  6. So that sort of contradicts what was said earlier that leeway would be given to teachers and tour guides.

When the General (as he was then) made the statements, I couldn't understand his reasoning, without actually changing the law, as tour guide is one of the protected occupations reserved for Thais.

Whether they speak the language of those they are looking after or not.

That comment was concerning the ( most recent) crack down on tourist visa re entries, What Prayuth decided was the immigration officials should have more room for leeway and "not enforce the law strictly" as teachers and tour guides would be affected, so as to allow them to continue working illegally on tourist visas.

This opened up a bit of wiggle room so border officers to be able to get er, gifts.

Was a priceless glimpse into the new mentality of some rules to be enforced, others not.

  7. It's just posted on the video forum and is stated from Koh Larn near Pattaya. Yes deplorable behavior, and yes probably happened more than once on Patong and every other beach where vendors were not regulated. Deplorable just like Jet skis operators who remain in business despite serious allegation of fraud and assault.

  8. What a load of <removed>. Thailand's new motto; CAVEAT EMPTOR.

    New motto?

It's always been that. No wonder you are so bitter if you've only just found that out.........

"Bitter" is a subjective personality assessment.

Are we discussing the topic or your opinion of me ?

    I can't comment on a deleted post.

Time and again, you have been presented with evidence that rich people have been hit by the clean-up, yet, you still ignore it and come out with your "class war" bumf.

Well I appreciate the more civil tone in this latest post, However I have not found the evidence convincing , no matter how many times you insist I must take your view . In fact I find this latest information about officials not be held to task to back up my class war er,. " bumf" ( bumf?)

  9. So whats going to happen when I arrive down to the beach with 5 sun lounges & 3 umbrellas to use for my 2 5yr old daughters, my wife my 93yr old mother & myself?

We like to spend all day on the beach but we like to lay out of the sand under an umbrella will we be deprived of this?

The beach chair/umbrella hire service had been a "unique" part of Phuket Beach life and getting drinks and fresh fruit brought to you was a treat it was also nice to get a massage on the odd occasion thats one of the many reasons we come to a place like this because it's different.

I understand some vendors took advantage of the situation and certainly something had to be done about it no argument about that but I do think the lounges/umbrellas need to be replaced in the high season in a more controlled way. The tourist obviously liked them judging by the scant availability of unoccupied sets during the high season .. we certainly did.

A lot of people here are also blaming the vendors being greedy etc but if you were given the opportunity to set up a business on the beach by the authorities would you not take up this opportunity? I bet some of you would.

No the people to blame for this is the greedy authorities who allowed it to happen in the first place not the locals they were just supplying a much wanted service under the guise of being permitted to do so.

This is absolutely correct. All you people who complain about the "greedy" "lawless" locals who work on the beach: Do you actually go to the beach? Do you know these people? I am on the beach 150 days or more a year. I am honored to know these these folks who treat me well.

I thnk a bit of the divide here is some beaches were inundated, but others were just right. ( IMO of course) While Patong may have have the types who assaulted towel sitters as in the video , Bang Tao was certainly not like that, and to apply the same harsh, baby out with bathwater penalties to all the beaches will prove to be a mistake. ( IMO of course)

  10. A stupid move by the government. The tourist should be able to relax and have food delivered, get a massage on the beach, have chairs and umbrellas available for use. But it should be regulated. Rent should be charge for use. number of sellers reduced and the price of chairs and umbrellas set so tourist are not overcharged.

You mean just like back home at Western beaches?

Why should it be allowed here? For the tourist experience?

It will be near impossible to regulate. The Generals have done the absolutely correct thing and if you don't like it, sorry. Toss them all off the beach.

    Buddha Bless the Generals.

    More at: <removed>

So if Thais cannot govern themselves to regulate something as simple as beach chair concessions then really, isn't that having just about the worse opinion possible for a culture? ( which I agree with completely )

Can't even follow a few simple rules? Is that civilized?
