  1.

They argue that welcoming Muslim immigrants was the first mistake the Western governments committed.

Granting migrants’ quest for their religious rights was another blunder

    And that is incorrect why?

Allowing persons of a mindset that is radically opposed to everything a free people holds dear to obtain citizenship was a huge blunder. The Saudis don't make that mistake. They allow "guest workers" only as long as they have a job, then they go home. The Saudis allow no dispensation for Christian worship and presumably any other infidel religion. They allow no tolerance for cultural differences, forcing everyone to kow tow to sharia. They have the example that the west should follow re Muslims.

More fool the west for not doing so. IMO not one mosque in a western city till there is a church in Riyadh.

Riyadh?? Why not Mecca and Medina?

  2. To the fellow who shut off his circuit breakers, worked on equipment and then found that the equipment worked on was live anyway: do you like living? Do you not have a multi-meter? Before I work on anything electric, I take my multi-meter and stick the pins into a plug-in socket I know is live to test that the meter is working and set up properly. Then I shut off the breaker to the equipment I am working on. Then I test to see if said equipment is live with the multi-meter. I test it at least twice, ensuring good contact with the pins. Only then do I work on that equipment.

Another common mistake I see is someone shutting off a control switch instead of the circuit breaker and then considering the equipment is isolated. That is not sufficient. Countless Thai "electricians" will wire the switch so that it switches the neutral wire instead of the load or hot wire. That means that the equipment will not run but it will be hot. Be very careful out there.

  3. Friend of mine got stopped years ago in his picup on Sukhumvit in Pattaya. The cop could find nothing wrong to issue a fine for so came up with a fine for smoking a cigarette while driving. My friend (who spoke good Thai) started laughing and told the cop in no uncertain terms that wasn't going to wash. The cop waved him on.

  4. The poster who says that there are no commercial oil quantities in the Gulf of Siam might want to tell Pearl Oil (Mubadala) or Salamander. They are both producing oil in the Gulf of Siam.

As to not benefiting the poor in Thailand? How about relatively inexpensive & clean electricity provided by the Natural gas industry? Or all the high paying jobs related to all the offshore oil activity?

  5. Really. Imo nationalise the telephone companies. They are using public resources for personal profit. The tech behind phones is easy, simple, and cold be better implemented as a public monopoly. Try and avoid the mess that Australia is in.

Great idea. Let the government run it, governments are so good at running businesses. The post office, the Soviet Union, Cuba, Venezuela come to mind...........

  6. No kidding on the freebees for gov't officials and families of Thai Air executives. I have been flying back and forth BKK -PEK on a monthly basis for 9 years and during the last couple of years, most of the people in First Class and Business Class are free loaders. You can always tell by all the deep bowing and kow-towing by the Thai staff.

I also agree that the practice of parking on the tarmac and busing to the gate is a pain in the butt. Now we are doing it both ways. Busing out to the plane on the way to Beijing as well. Once a first rate airline (20 years ago). Now a second rate airline. They are fast becoming a third rate airline.

  7. Beware Shell stations, They are notorious for not re-zeroing the meter. I once had a goof ball fill my 2 gallon tank on a motorbike and try and charge me 400 baht in 1990 at the old Shell station on Central road near the Nova Lodge. I had to threaten the manager that I would call the cops and surely they would see the absurdity of a 2 gallon tank trying to hold 10 gallons. She relented and charged me 50 baht (which was still too much)

  8. I have been flying Thai Air regularly once a month since 1988. I started with the Seattle - Bangkok flight. Back then the flight attendants were young, pretty and very attentive. The service and food were excellent. Over the years I have flown to various destinations and the overall service has steadily deteriorated to the point that Thai is one of the worst airlines in terms of service and food. The planes are old, dirty and hay wired together. I have seen toilet seats secured to the toilet with duct tape, etc. The only reason that I still fly Thai is that the alternative is even worse (Air China out of Beijing). Too bad Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific don't fly that route direct.

Some of the flight attendants that I flew with in 1988 are still flying with Thai but in business class and they have certainly enjoyed the food supplied by Thai. LOL

  9. Here is the info that you need. They are very professional and helpful.

This is from the lady at the consulate:

    1. A valid Canadian passport with at least 6 months of valildity remaining
on it when you enter Thailand and at least one set of two opposing blank
    pages in the passport
    2. One passport-type photo - coloured or black and white
    3. A copy of your Marriage Certificate
    4. A copy of the picture page of your wife's passport - this also must be a
    valid passport
    5. A copy of your flight itinerary from Calgary (or wherever your first
    flight originates) to Thailand

You will come in and fill out a Visa application form (takes about 15
minutes). The usual turnaround timeframe for visa issuance is two business
days. However, if time is of the essence, for a $20.00 surcharge, we will
complete your visa the same morning you apply. The cost for a Multiple Entry
Non-Immigrant visa is $175.00. The cost for a Single Entry Non-Immigrant
visa is $65.00. We accept cash or money orders only - if paying by cash, we
ask that you bring the exact bill change.

Hope the above is a bit clearer - if you have any further questions or
    concerns, please let me know.

  10. A Farang female friend of mine asked me which Thai Language School has the best reputation for effectively teaching Thai and help with getting an Education Visa. She would like a school that has branches in Bangkok, Pattaya and perhaps elsewhere. She says that she plans to use the ED visa to be able to stay in Thailand but that she also wants to learn Thai at a reputable school as well. Does anybody have any suggestions?

  11. Works both ways. A friend of mine stopped at the 7-11 on the Chonburi Motorway halfway point and bought a couple of beers during the restricted hours and a Thai behind him asked the staff what was going on and why couldn't they buy beer? The answer from staff was "it's ok, he is a farang, the rule dosesn't apply to them". My friend had to work very hard to contain his giggling and sense of satisfaction of "getting one over, for once"......

  12. Crook? I don't know about Paul McCartney but Clinton sure as hel_l is a crook!

Thailand to target deposed PM's assets

Forbes magazine in July said Thaksin is Thailand's fourth richest businessman with a fortune worth R2,2-billion.

Who are the three? The ones richer than him? Would be interesting to know.

....and what is R2,2-billion? Is that Rand, Ruppees, Baht even, or Dollars or Pounds? I'm a multi milllionaire in Vietnam and Italy, really!!!

You will find details about the other three, all wealthier than Thaksin, at the following site:

    [link removed by Admin2]

They are, according to Forbes ranking:

    214. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Thailand, 61, $3.2, alcohol

    292. Chaleo Yoovidhya, Thailand, 74, $2.5, Red Bull

    317. Dhanin Chearavanont and family, Thailand, 66, $2.4, agriculture

Thaksin was clearly a wealthy man before taking office and was taken to court over the stated value of his assets some months after taking office. He was cleared by the courts.

Why do we assume that, because he's rich, that he's a crook? Paul McCartney's a billionaire, is he also corrupted? Bill Clinton was on the verge of bankruptcy but is now a multi-millionaire.

So many critics, I wonder where all of you get your facts.

  13. You need the multi entry type with your travel and the only place that has a high probability of issue would be Penang.  I would highly advise going there rather than Singapore (or as a side trip if you have other plans in Singapore).  You do have valid reasons for the multi type so it might be that Singapore would issue to you but in general Penang is much more likely to provide.  Be sure to have copy of wife ID card if she not with you; as well as copy of marriage certificate.

I have attained a one year multi-entry non-immigrant type "O" visa in Singapore more than once with no problems at all. All you need is a copy of your marriage certificate, your wife's ID card and the normal required extras such as photos. They do not like to issue long term Type"B" visas in the Singapore embassy but Type"O" are no problem.
