  1. Got to agree with you. As I've said a few times before on this forum...what's the problem? All we do is spend spend spend, we get nothin' for nothin' here. We'll never get Thai citizenship or welfare payments and free housing and free medical....all those things that Thais get back in our home countries. So what's it matter if John Doe spends 10 months a year in Thailand ringing the bell in a Pattaya bar or eating a coconut on Patong Beach?

There is no welfare system in Thailand like you would find in most western countries even for Thai nationals, you can however access the health system and the limited social security system if you have worked here and contributed from your salary each month.
My company provides health insurance but I could if I chose to use a government hospital at no charge.
When I retire should I decide to remain in Thailand I will be entitled to the same pension as a Thai national and can also still have access to the government health system by paying the charge which I believe currently is 460baht a month
Why do people who retire here think they should have access to the Thai welfare system(limited as it is) when they have not contributed?
Would I for example be allowed to access the welfare system in Australia if I chose to move there when I retire? Would I even be allowed to retire there? Currently I cannot access the NHS in my home country (UK) apart from emergency treatment as I have been non resident for over 20 years
I do however agree with your comment about it being very difficult to get Thai citizenship
PR is not so difficult though but you do need to be able to show that you have payed taxes here for 3 years or more I think

  2.
Uh, those people are giving their mobile 'phone number - not their membership card number.  Hardly difficult to remember.

Being able to quote your phone number in Thai I have found is also quite useful
However if that’s not possible maybe consider only going shopping with your wife lol

  3. I have no issue paying slightly more, eg - 80b instead of 40b.

What I do have a real annoyance to is some of the places charging 8 or more times the price. I was in Ayutthaya last year and was forced to pay 320b for a ticket to 4 or 5 of the temples when my wife paid just 40b. They rudely wouldn't accept my WP, DL or even my wife showing her Thai ID with my surname added on it.

I pay about 13,000b / month in tax so over the course of a year that is 156,000b Thailand gets from me working here. I am not expecting hordes of gratitude, but being treated fairly would be appreciated, as would an entry line at airports for people working here (like many other countries) and not being forced to queue with the hordes of tourists at immigration.

You can get a fast track letter which allows you to use the priority lane at immigration at the same time as you extend your WP each year or you can apply online
Your Thai HR colleagues at your company should be able to do this for you
    Email [email protected] for details

  4. I too am against it.

I think it was originally intended for the bus loads of foreign tourists that come here on vacation.

Who's to say that the cashier(s) are being honest and not just pocketing the extra money?

When I enter places like Phu Rua or other national parks I am charged 10 times what my wife is charged (200 baht vs 20 baht or 400 vs 40 etc).  Who's to say that the cashiers don't just ring up an entry for two Thai nationals and then pocket the extra "falang" money?

Could be a good racket for dishonest cashier(s) in my opinion and should be discontinued for folks living here (with a Thai driving license) and especially for those with a Thai wife and kids (as they have a family to support).

How do those children feel growing up knowing that their Daddy (or Mommy) has to pay 10x extra to get in just because he was born in another country?

I'd feel better paying the same entry fee but later dropping some cash into a donation bin (for upkeep and maintenance of the park) hoping that the money is not pilfered by unscrupulous individuals.  I'd personally drop more into the park donation bin than they get out of my 10x farang entry fee.

Why do you assume the difference is pocketed?
When ever I have entered a NP with my girlfriend I have received a ticket which clearly shows I have paid the non Thai price and she received tickets showing the Thai price paid

  5. I am seeking some information as I will be hopefully retiring in 2 years time from my job here.

At the moment my extension to stay is based on the fact that I am employed here in Thailand

Will I be able to stay on the Non B but just change the extension to stay to Retirement?

I have more than adequate funds to cover the financial requirement.

Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

  6. The new work permits do not have the employers name on them anymore. But those have only been issued recently. There is not clear info available stating how it is done now.
I would say you will have to get a new work permit when you change employers.
The work permit is not the only thing that has to be changed. You current extension of stay would have to be canceled and a new one applied for with documents from your new employer and a work permit application approval letter.

Ubonjoe I’m afraid must disagree with you on one point
I recently renewed my work permit and now have the new digital version as an app on my phone
It consists of two pages the first being my personal details such as name passport number and job title
On the second page it clearly states my employers name and address
Unfortunately I cannot post a copy here but I’m you wish I can pm you with the details to back up my comments
    Regards

  7. So this is basically a cautionary tale for any would-be stupid tourist type like me in the hope it can save you a lot of trouble........

So I have been to Thailand several times and am usually on my guard but being that i have been here several times I let my hair/guard down and had a few (too many) drinks on the khao san rd on my first night in bangkok.

I was walking around and a tuk tuk guy stopped and asked me if i wanted the usual ping pong, lady boy, or strip show. I said no and he gets out a booklet with all these things ppl can do.

I have a look to be polite and see shooting range stuff so I ask a price and he says 6-8000 THB. I said that was too expensive and started to walk away and he follows saying "he knows a better place, cheaper and better".

So...............long story short I agree 4500 THB for a taxi journey to a "private gun range" including firing 30 bullets and we set off me sat in the back with a bottle of chang in hand.

About 45-50 mins ish later (i think) we arrive at what looked like a warehouse/garage lock upo with a house next to it in a little like industrial area and i get a bit worried thinking Im gonna be robbed. The driver gets out goes to a building and a guy comes out they talk and the driver waved me over. I stayed in the tuk tuk and he came over with the guy and the guy says "I have gun range private, you can shoot gun". I went in it was like a 3 lane gun range and looked like it had been home made as there was sand and lanes and 3 targets at the bottom.

The guy went to a locker brought out 3 hand guns and a basket of bullets and put them on the table and the driver and him were talking in Thai. The driver then said ok 20 bullets 4500 THB and I said no 30 so we haggled a bit and it was agreed 25 bullets for 4500THB for this handgun to be fired.

They said they had no new targets so i had to fire into the old ones already up and after 3 bullets the gun jammed. sorted and again kept happening and gun range guy says "sorry gun needs maintenance" so i kept having to pull back the top bit to get the jammed rounds out. Rounds were flying out and I had my bag there under the little table and I asked to get some videos of me.

He said no because "private gun range" and I eventually was allowed to take a picture of the guns and ammo and the target but NOTHING else (which now kind of makes sense but after 7-8 chang....).

I fired about 28 and the gun kept jamming, we kept having to pick bullets up off the floor and reload the gun magazine and in the end the guy said I had to leave as he had "other people coming" so me and tuk tuk driver left and went back to bangkok Khao San rd area where he tried to get even more money out of me (standard).

So, 10 days later Im on koh tao riding my moped back from snorkelling and there is a police road check and they stop me (and everyone else). The police guy puts his hand in my bag and pulls out a live 9mm bullet. I thought it was a joke or a way of blackmailing me at first but he was serious and i was arrested.

Long story short I had to get a friend to post 80,000 THB bail. I am having to go to court and it looks like I will be deported and blacklisted after being fined.

I am absolutely devastated to say the least and this is a warning to only go to proper gun ranges and maybe use a little common sense that unfortunately i did not on the night.

I can only assume the bullet fell into my open bag (I took mt camera phone out and it was below the shooting table) when the bullets were jamming in the gun as the "range" had zero safety measures (i wasn't even given ear defenders just them orange platic things for sleeping better).

    Anyone with similar experience?

I think you got what you deserved, anybody wanting to visit a gun range of any type after 7-8 Chang’s needs their head examined

  8. I met my current gf on TF and she is a single mum aged 30 and her ex has done a runner
she insists on working(home pro ) and has not asked for money from me she has a nice Thai style apartment that she keeps looking very nice
Obviously when we go out to meet friends and socialise I pay as I should do!!
We maintain separate homes at the moment but maybe we will move in together in the future but who knows
But she has not even hinted about giving up her apartment to come and stay with me
Sometimes she stays with me at my house and she has work the next day I pay for the taxi for her to go to work as my home is a long way from where she works
She is a fiercely independent woman and I admire for that
She is just a nice girl who wants some love and affection and stability in her life and she gives me the same
Not all the girls/ladies on TF are gold diggers so just chose carefully
    Rant over
So to conclude not every girl on TF is a gold digging freelancer

  9. We applied for UK Visitor Visa for my G.F a few weeks ago and were successful.
i did everything myself, no agent, I must of wrote rewrote the Sponsors Letter, numerous times,  I compiled a folder with probably more info than needed.
Thanks for all the info and advice everyone, saved me thousands of baht.

I agree no need to waste money on an agent, you need to show the immigration people in the U.K. That you have the funds to support your self and your gf and her child whilst you are in the UK and they will not become a burden on the Uk taxpayer
You also must be able to show that you have a reason to return to Thailand after your holiday, I get my employer to confirm my position and salary here in Thailand and I have also backed that up with copies of rental contract for our home in bkk
A letter from a family member confirming that as well as you they will be supporting your gf and here son during their visit
Although not a requirement I always take out travel insurance for my gf and here daughter when we go to the uk to further demonstrate she won't be a burden on the uk tax payer, this is icing on the cake but all adds to the general picture
As I said earlier they(uk immigration) want you to show you have the funds to support your gf and her son and that you intend to return to Thailand
    Good luck

  10. Most handicapped toilets I have seen in Thailand have sliding doors.

What makes a toilet handicapped? Does it have MS or perhaps Cerebal Palsy or even Downes Syndrome
I prefer the term Disabled which is now commonly used in the UK as the people that fall into this category are less able than the rest of us they most definitely are not handicapped
For the record my wife has cerebal palsy and she is not in anyway handicapped
    Rant over!!!
  11. I have read replies ...

I do not have a solicitor or anything ..

What started as my main concern was if the Thai family could get hold of our money .. Until he pays me wage he owes me ..

I have no idea if the villa has actually sold..

If it's sold, I have no idea where the money is as he is on tourist visa ..

I have no idea where he is living cud be with daughter in law.

He does not seem to want a divorce .. If I mentioned it.. He ignores ..

I am just kissed off .. He just changed and all because this daughter in law was affectionate to him.. But I do know whatever she or however she acts.. It's for her own agenda .. She also played me, my so. And my Hsiang against each other and she was the one that always was the victim if her and my son had fights.. Nasty piece of work ..

So, there is nothing I can do .. But in the end his loss .. As he is loosing his own family for the Thai family .. Silly man..

And your a native English speaker? Please!!!

  12. Irish Consulate in Bangkok sent my application back because It only had a signature of the witness.

They need 2 photos signed and stamped and the form singed and stamped by a witness,

    for a replacement passport.

How do you put a company stamp on the back of a passport photo?

My company have a smaller stamp specifically to enable their expat staff to have their photos stamped when renewing passports

    Simple really

  13. So all these farangs come to Thailand and marry local girls. They do

not have a SINGLE thing in common. Not religion, not education,

not language, NOTHING. Then later on they wonder why the marriage

did not work out, and the Thai girl just wanted money.....cheesy.gif

I would suggest most foreigners in Thailand have mainly little or no education, no skills, and are generally the dregs of western society.

In which case they have a lot in common with the 'Issan farm girls' they marry.

    As for my marriage,

My parents bricklayer and hairdresser, her parents farmers.

My education to post grad, her education ..... junior school when we met, she was very young .... but now finished high school, started university.

Once she's finished our educational levels will be the same.

I find your comment very insulting both to me and my gf

I have a very good job here but have no formal qualifications other then city and guilds in engineering

My gf is from a farming family near surin she is not and I quote an "issan farm girl" she speaks two different Thai dialects and perfect English and passable Afrikaans due to having lived in SA for a number of years

She didn't finish high school due to both her parents passing away when she was only 15-16 so she came to Bangkok to work in a factory to support her younger siblings with the help of her elder sister and she studied hard to better herself

She has now done night school to catch up on what she missed by not finishing high school and will start at university soon

And I am so proud of my "issan farm girl" she's 38 by the way

so I think you should desist from taring everyone with the same brush so get back on the bar stool and drink another Chang

    Rant over

  14. Find a girl your age and one that has an open mind and some appreciation for the fact that you come from a different culture and that there is such a term called "meeting in the middle". There seems to be this perception that all Thais are dead set in their ways but that's not necessarily true.

A woman my age is likely to be wrinkly with sagging breasts and maybe a few teeth missing. Why on earth would I want one of those? blink.png I might as well be back in my home country, or doing without.

A woman over 35 definitely - for me. Much better biggrin.png

And before you ask, No, I am not perfect, but I'm not considered too bad either laugh.png

I am 77 and she 27 been together 4 years now get along great. No its not the money as I am not rich but after I snuff it she will get enough for a small house on the land she now owns. She will have enough to survive on till the next lucky gent comes along and thats OK to. Somebody will get a darn nice gal after I am blowing in the win. What worries my is that so many expats now want only the thinnest most beautiful girl around. They seem to be on a mission in this respect. I lucked out really because my g/f met my 3 criteria. No kids, speaks tolerable English and does not work. For the sake of disclosure she was my 3nd attempt at finding somebody compatible but the wait was worth it.

    We're discussing your granddaughter right?

  15. When I first got here, I had two relationships where the girls were 19-21 and I was in my fifties. I was hoping for love, but later I realized neither one loved me. They were just using me for sex.

    Lucky you!!

How much did they pay you?

Was it for shirt time or long time?

  16. Not sure why a witness is needed to get a passport renewed. But that must be a requirement from your home country.

Why is your wife reluctant to try the local police? They might do it.

The U.K. Requires a witness to confirm that the photos you submit with your application are actually you, the back of the photo is agh ed by the witness.

The witness must be a Policeman, Doctor(MD), Lawyer, Accountant or. JP

    Same rules apply in Ireland

    No they do not.

Not if you are applying for a new passport.

Only if applying for your first passport.

Yes they do as I have recently applied for a new Irish passport and the form had a section that had to be completed by the witness who signed the back of the photos stating their occupation!!

The financial director at the company I work for did this for me as obviously being the financial director she is an accountant!!

However I will stand corrected about the British passport renewal as mine still has some time to run

And before you get all unnecessary I have dual citizenship

One of the benefits of being born in England to Irish parents
