Uh, those people are giving their mobile 'phone number - not their membership card number.  Hardly difficult to remember.

Being able to quote your phone number in Thai I have found is also quite useful
However if that’s not possible maybe consider only going shopping with your wife lol

2. I have no issue paying slightly more, eg - 80b instead of 40b.

What I do have a real annoyance to is some of the places charging 8 or more times the price. I was in Ayutthaya last year and was forced to pay 320b for a ticket to 4 or 5 of the temples when my wife paid just 40b. They rudely wouldn't accept my WP, DL or even my wife showing her Thai ID with my surname added on it.

I pay about 13,000b / month in tax so over the course of a year that is 156,000b Thailand gets from me working here. I am not expecting hordes of gratitude, but being treated fairly would be appreciated, as would an entry line at airports for people working here (like many other countries) and not being forced to queue with the hordes of tourists at immigration.

You can get a fast track letter which allows you to use the priority lane at immigration at the same time as you extend your WP each year or you can apply online
Your Thai HR colleagues at your company should be able to do this for you
Email [email protected] for details

3. I too am against it.

I think it was originally intended for the bus loads of foreign tourists that come here on vacation.

Who's to say that the cashier(s) are being honest and not just pocketing the extra money?

When I enter places like Phu Rua or other national parks I am charged 10 times what my wife is charged (200 baht vs 20 baht or 400 vs 40 etc).  Who's to say that the cashiers don't just ring up an entry for two Thai nationals and then pocket the extra "falang" money?

Could be a good racket for dishonest cashier(s) in my opinion and should be discontinued for folks living here (with a Thai driving license) and especially for those with a Thai wife and kids (as they have a family to support).

How do those children feel growing up knowing that their Daddy (or Mommy) has to pay 10x extra to get in just because he was born in another country?

I'd feel better paying the same entry fee but later dropping some cash into a donation bin (for upkeep and maintenance of the park) hoping that the money is not pilfered by unscrupulous individuals.  I'd personally drop more into the park donation bin than they get out of my 10x farang entry fee.

Why do you assume the difference is pocketed?
When ever I have entered a NP with my girlfriend I have received a ticket which clearly shows I have paid the non Thai price and she received tickets showing the Thai price paid

4. Take a TM 28 to the police station and watch the confused looks.
[/
When I visit my gf family home near Phen I too enjoyed the look at confusion at the local police station on my first visit when I presented the form but to be fair they are now used to seeing me and stamp and give me the receipt then I am happy with that
What they then do with the paperwork is not important as I have the official stamp on the receipt confirming that I reported
We do not make a special trip to Phen we just submit the form when we are in town and put the current days date on it
Obviously they or immigration have no idea when we traveled from bkk so personally I don’t see it as a major hassle

6. I would also say that here in Thailand the rules for driving bare no relation to how they are say in Europe or the US
One should always remember that the me me attitude means very few other road users will yield or give way
Sensible filtering at busy junctions is non existent and the attitude that other road users can and will pull out from a left turn without looking and recklessly change lanes for no apparent reason again without looking or signalling as it seems the general rule is that it is your responsibility to avoid them when they pull out in front of you, jump red lights or make any other crazy unexpected(to a normal person) manoeuvre
Unfortunately this phenomenon is not fully understood by visitors
With often tragic results
I have a pickup and a big bike and I drive/ride on the basis that everyone else on the road is trying to kill me!

7. I really don't think that Thais know who has right of way. I cannot remember how many times i have stopped at a roundabout giving way to traffic from my right, and everybody else stops too. Or the guy behind me starts hooting.  grrrrr !

I’m sure you realise that there are not that many roundabouts in Thailand so generally most drivers are not aware of the “give way to the right” rule and in fact it is the cars actually on the roundabout that must give way so that is why the guy behind you was hooting as you had right of way and the vehicle on the roundabout should give way as you enter
Crazy but that’s how it is

8. Someone tell me why the Irish government didn't put a border up when the IRA were killing Protestants (and Others) for years during the 1970s-1990s. Funny how it was important then but it is now!

Actually during the troubles there was what would be termed a hard border at all major crossing points between the ROI and NI such as the one at Auchnacloy in Co Tyrone on the A5, other smaller roads were blocked to prevent vehicles crossing but crossing the border was always possible on foot in the border as a lot of farm land belonging to a farmer would very often straddle the border so hence the reason troops were deployed to what is some time known as bandit country to try and counter this.
The reason the people of both NI and The ROI do not want a return to a hard border is because it will hark back to those very dark days that I think any right minded person would agree with
Some of these fixed border crossings were attacked on a regular basis by the IRA/INLA and properly the worst example of this was the attack on a checkpoint just outside Derry on the Letterkenny road where a civilian chef Pattie Gillespie who worked at the barracks in Derry was abducted from his home at gun point while his family were held hostage and was forced to drive a car bomb to the check point, he tried to warn the soldiers but unfortunately he and to soldiers died in the resulting explosion(suicide bombing by proxy) we do not want a return to this kind of stuff
Rant over

9. My experience from renting condos in TH tought me that there is

0 % chance getting back your deposit
70 % chance that the landlord cheat with electricity

Bad bad farrang.....

Complete nonsense I have rented two houses and a condo from Thai landlords and always got a receipt for my deposit and the deposit was always refunded in full, minus a cleaning charge which was a token amount and was clearly stated in the contract which I agreed to,
I always paid the rent by internet banking transfer so there was always a record of the payments I made , not that there was ever a dispute about non payment
On occasion there were problems with air con plumbing and other things and these were all sorted out by the landlords at no cost to me
In all cases my landlords at the time submitted the TM30 as required by law and I received the receipt stamped by the local immigration office confirming that he had actually submitted said TM 30
Perhaps you have been dealing with the wrong type of landlord

10. Hi all,

got married last year to my wife and she'll be joining me in Ireland this year.

Here in Ireland I can claim tax credits from her for being married, however as she was not resident here during this time I need to prove that she wasn't earning anything in 2018.

Is there a government document to prove that she had zero income or was unemployed for the entire year?

Thanks for any help.

Ireland allows married couples to transfer their tax allowance to the working “partner” thereby reducing said partners tax liabilities
However the transferring partner must have a PPS number (social security card) and if unemployed must not be in receipt of any benefits
The only documentation you need to complete is a declaration obtainable from your local social welfare office signed by your wife stating that she wishes her tax allowances to be transferred to her husband and on that form she will need to input her PPS Number
This benefit is not retrospective so does not apply in your case as you are looking to avail of this tax break for 2018
Having said all this if your wife has never been in the system in Ireland and does not have a PPS number it is not possible to take advantage of this tax break
This was my experience with my ex who was a uk national but was living with me in Dublin but did not have a PPS number so all we did was go to the local social welfare office and applied for one which she then received within two weeks
Obviously under the EU freedom of movement regulations it was a mere formality
If your wife is non EU national then getting a PPS number may not be as straight forward
Hope this helps and I would recommend that you should look at the Irish government website gov.ie for more up to date infomation

11. 4MyEgo,
Valid point; but as I said in my first post in this topic, under the pre 2012 system
Now obviously the cost of living, especially housing costs, varies widely across the UK; as I`m sure it does in Australia. But even taking that into account, the UK government insists a couple where one partner is an immigrant needs an income considerably higher than that they say a wholly British couple can live on!

So same as Thailand then where you must lodge 400000 THB in a Thai bank or show a monthly income far in excess of what a lot of Thai families would have as a monthly income

12. I would like to make a couple of points about this whole sad situation
Unfortunately the “twist and go” appears to the uninformed to be a moped rather than a motorbike as I did when I first moved here and as such believed that my uk driving licence accompanied by an IDP meant I was licensed to ride one
I found however when stopped at a check point in hua hin that I was not licensed so I had to pay the appropriate fine
When I rented the motorbike the only document I was asked to show was my passport so I believe that whilst the rental shop are not entirely to blame they must accept some responsibility for renting a “vehicle” to a customer who clearly did not have a licence to operate said vehicle ever here or in his home country
I can not comment on other country’s but I do know that when you present yourself at a rental place in the uk you must have the correct licence for the vehicle you wish to rent be it a car, minibus , HGV or what ever failure to have the correct licence will result in the rental being denied
Unfortunately young men in particular are risk takers and as such do not always consider the possible out comes of their decisions(we have all been there) this unfortunately can combine to be a lethal cocktail here in Thailand where the roads as we know all too well are extremely dangerous and it is so easy to rent a motorbike as in this case.

13. "...unfortunately the link to the UK paper doesn't seem to want to work..."
It does with a VPN.

"...any more info as to the background is unavailable, it would appear though that he had had a troubled childhood having lived with various families".
Where did you get that information from?

"FYI I left school at 15 and joined the British Army..."
You signed up aged 15?

Yes entirely possible to sign up for what was known as junior leaders years ago at 15 but obviously you do not actually join until on or after your 16th birthday which is the earliest you can leave school

14. UK, 16 for bike, 17 for car...

16 yrs for a moped max 50 cc with pedals hence the phrase moped
As stated previously in this thread it would be impossible for a 17 yr old to have a full motorbike licence due to the time involved completing the different training required to obtain a licence
Unlike Thailand you can not sit your test on a twist and go one day and the next go out and ride a 1000cc bike

15. I am seeking some information as I will be hopefully retiring in 2 years time from my job here.

At the moment my extension to stay is based on the fact that I am employed here in Thailand

Will I be able to stay on the Non B but just change the extension to stay to Retirement?

I have more than adequate funds to cover the financial requirement.

Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

16. Yeah the other poster on the previous page is wrong, international drivers license is valid.

Getting a Thai driver license requires a certificate of residence (30-60 minutes), proof of good health by a doctor (5-minute job), and half a day at the Land & Transport office where you spend most of your time waiting so altogether it can easily consume a whole day. It's funny how they provide a paper of good health without any health check at all.

No body is saying a tourist should get a Thai licence, just that the should have the correct licence and IDP from their home country for the vehicle they are a using. In the Uk you can ride a moped with a car licence, maybe some people assume that the twist and go motorbike is the same as a moped in their home country so their car licence will be ok

17. 'HIGH-SO' corruption with under the table dealings. Possibly?

A poor Thai pensioner had innocently picked mushrooms, was arrested and charged, yet a filthy rich, possible murderer, could get away with killing a Royal Thai Police officer. A real crime!

Why did the accuse run? Why did the accuse not appear in court? Why does the accuse not return to Thailand?

The 'Guilty Bell' rings out loudly in my ears.

The accused should be sent back to Thailand to stand trail.
Why the British government have not yet acted is beyond me!

The rich and powerful such as Bankers Politicians Religious leaders and so on... (not all), but in general seem to get away with 'murder', whilst the rest pay for their mistakes.

Once again greed lurks its ugly head...

Unfortunately the authorities in the UK if that is where he is at the moment can only act if a formal request for his extradition is lodged and that is obviously not been made so there is very little the UK authorities can do

18. yes it's always been like this travelling into ireland but when we travel into the uk from ireland there is no passport control for irish flights, don't know why but that's the way it is. as you said with the CTA you would think there would be no checks

When checking in for a flight from the UK to Ireland a non EU passport holder will have to show that they have the correct visa for entering the Republic of Ireland the common travel rule only applies to UK and Irish citizens
