i monitor daily as do a lot of people nowadays as its cheap and easy to get a pm2.5 meter. Currently 122 here in kanchanaburi. No words can express the lack of action by government with this issue. It really makes no sense at all and its almost like they welcome the pollution because it continues to get worse and the action taken is zero. Ibe done more than my local government. I have gone out with tractor and water tanks and put the fires out myself every year for the last 3years here and only because its getting worse. My kids are coughing, forced to sleep with masks on, cant even open a dam wi dow during the day. Its a human rights abuse. Im a farmer and i dont burn and no ody needs to. Ignorant farmers that are actually depleting nutrients from the soil over time. Idiots!!

This outfit here in the US (and I'm sure there are others) makes DIY electronic devices, and this one seems just the thing to put around LOS.  https://learn.adafruit.com/remote-iot-environmental-sensor

"service which used to be very personable has dropped a notch here with the younger generations seemingly unwilling to go the extra mile or perhaps just tired from the crowds we are seeing these days,"

the younger generation is totally useless and brain dead for the most part, faces glued to mobiles, reading shallow worthless garbage. you go in somewhere to do business and 80% of the time they don't want to put down the mobile and do the job they are getting paid to do.

i went to a friend's pharmacy last week. he wasn't in but had a girl there who i assume was a recent CMU graduate based upon her uniform. she was the only one in and had her earplugs in, watching something on her iPhone, laughing. there were 2 customers; me and a woman. she failed to notice either of us standing at the counter and we could not get her attention because the earplugs. the woman walked out. i rang my friend on his mobile as i stood there and told him the situation. he thanked me and said he saw the same thing when he came in the day before. she was fired a day or two later.

I wonder how he solved the "face" issue when she got fired?

  3. probably has rabies or any number of diseases.

    good riddance

let the RTP concentrate on real crime... oh yeah, that's too hard

Possibly rabies? Yeah maybe, but how can you justify this crime!????

Screw the RTP. They wouldn't soil themselves to deal with a soi dog- uh, I mean human.

Nothing will be done until Thais understand the REAL meaning of life. Please, listen to the Buddhist teachings. This is not the way.

  4. That sort of behavior by professional security is completely uncalled for under any circumstance. Oh, sorry... Mai Pen Rai. :-(

I'm married to a wonderful Thai lady for 30+ years (living in the US), but I've been loving LoS less and less lately for many reasons, including incidents like this. <deleted> ?!?!

Thailand is simply getting very UGLY very quickly. Do I really want to return to vacation? It's a beautiful country with mostly beautiful people, but the more posts I see here on TV, the less I want to go back.

It makes me very sad that this sort of anger and hostility (to foreigners or otherwise?) exists, and makes me fear even speaking to a Thai on the street for fear I'll say something that pisses them off enough to hurt or kill me. Sad state of affairs.

If I hear the news about the old USA it is a very dangerous place I would never consider visiting.

Point well taken. Yes, the US has MANY issues - not denying that.

    Maybe off topic, but...

The problem I see is that this sort of incident "might have been" exacerbated by wide spread Thai racism, lack of proper Police intervention, and lack of language difference tolerance.

If these Thai bouncers had reason to eject this guy, there was no reason that a proper Buddhist (or any compassionate human) would treat any person to that sort of pain and injustice.

  6. If I am the one you're calling troll, please simply let me know how best to join discussions if I can't post a response to a thread.

I apologize for my post that you considered off topic and commercial. I have no self interest in that post's referenced endeavor. I was trying to do nothing more than highlight what some might find an amusing alternate lifestyle film. Nothing else. Several of the film's actors and crew have "different" preferences and lifestyles and find the film's premise lighthearted in it's attempts to enlighten others of alternate lifestyles.

I try very hard to not be prejudiced to gender or sexual orientation, as I have two brothers in law who are kathoey, as well as two friends in the music business who have had what I believe they prefer to call "sex reassignment". I treat and refer to them as they wish.

Please forgive if I've offended anyone.

  7. Facebook in the U.S. is becoming much less relevant for young people. Kids are TURNED OFF to know their parents and grandparents are now on that site too! Facebook is probably doing a lot of things to try to retain and attract the younger market and this is probably one of them.

This won't save them, it's slowly sinking because it's too complex. A victim of itself.

Hi folks. I've been lurking for months now. It's about time I had a bit of a voice. My name is Doug. Great to be here and really appreciate everything I've learned from your site. Please forgive me as I learn the culture and rules, and feel free to enlighten me, but please don't judge. Just ask or PM if necessary.

FWIW - I agree with the above. FB and other social media needs to be reinvented. IMO, they have become way too divergent and unfriendly even in simple terms of user experience. It never seems clear what a is expected of a user, or how his information will be used.

I'd STRONGLY suggest that social media needs to reevaluate its user experience, else they lose serious groud, not only with the older, less savvy crowd, but even the younger folks who start looking for a simpler "fix" of social.

    Down off my soap box.

  8. I'm mostly lurking here and trying to make sense of the whole Thai political thing. I really appreciate everyone's postings. They are really helpful. Thanks!

I've been married to a Thai woman from Korat for nearly 30 years (here in the US) and my first time in Thailand this past March had me in LOVE with Chiang Mai - apparently not a surprise to many of you. It was the home I never thought I'd ever experience.

We plan on moving to CM in a couple years (retirement), and I'm really stressed about the current political climate. As a farang, does anyone think that Westerners will be "ousted" or looked down upon in the foreseeable future? I don't feel like being beat up by some Thai guys simply because I'm farang.

(Sorry if this derails the thread. Feel free to move it or recommend a better place.)

  9. Was I just lucky?

I was in Chiang Mai for a few days at the beginning of March this year (2013) and I saw no issues with smoke at all. The city via from Doi Suthep was a bit hazy, but we didn't see or smell any problems.

This was my first time in Thailand and was planning to settle down in Chiang Mai, but now I not too sure. Is CM really worth it for putting up with a couple months of smoke?
