Are you referring to the legality of open container in Thailand?  It is legal to walk around with an open bottle of beer.  Sure, it's not the classiest thing to do, but you see it in the city as well as near the beaches.  What's your beef?  If they properly chuck the bottle or can in a bin, who gives a rat's ass?

IF the empties were consistently so discarded and IF all they did was walk around (instead of trying to enter restaurants, bars, & shops with it), I suppose not many would have anything but the odd comment about how lame it is.   Oh wait - that's all they ARE doing, and it actually IS pretty much on-topic.   So what and what's YOUR beef if you see someone mentioning it here - as you so eloquently put it, who gives a rat's ass?

For those who made comments on defective merchandise and VAT refunds.  I bought a thermos flask and discovered the stopper was defective.  Went to the store the next day and was given a new stopper.  Bought a laptop at The Mall and was asked if I needed documentation for a VAT refund.  Upon departing no problem getting the refund.  Sometimes attitude is very important how one is treated.

Hawker, I agree about TAT's good intentions, except they need to learn  how to implement this program to make it work.

READ the article.  This is not about ANYTHING other than tour group scams.  Nothing else.  Not defective or counterfeit merchandise.  Not about false advertising.  Not about shop ripoffs.  Not about scheming tuk-tuk or taxi drivers.  Not about any of the 1001 scams a tourist might encounter except....  'Tour companies, and only applies to "registered" tour companies (who have to pay fees to BE registered...) at that!

Well unfortunately most of us do use such PIN numbers for us to remember easily...

Come on now.  You can't remember ANY other number but your unaltered birth year?   Backwards; add one to each digit; move each digit one to the right or left and wrap the end digit; use someone else's birth year; some other significant year in your life; some other number entirely (street no. of your favorite bar or massage place...).    This is at least a case of something you likely use often enough that after the first few times you won't have trouble remembering it at all whatever it is.

i think your slightly off course a bit, i think money helps a lot all round sure but if one has all these assets but is grumpy smelly ugly bad tempered im sure the girl would rather be with a man who has a lot less money but is good looking good tempered clean and pride in his appearance i dont mean broke. also once youve been with a lady a few years im sure the man is not there for her pussy either after a few years we all know the same pussy becomes very boring.

"but is grumpy smelly ugly bad tempered im sure the girl would rather be with a man who has a lot less money "

Yeah, right, though she might very well take up with the poorer but better looking one on the side...

I have no desire to know the facts of his or any other movie stars sex life. As far as I'm concerned it appears that to be successful in the movie industry as a star  being 5 ft 2 inches tall or bent or both is required. Applies to both sexes by the way.

My post was about people outside that industry or as they or me are called 'the ordinary people' who may be accused years later of something that was laughed off by both parties at the time and by the time the real facts come to light it has damaged both parties.

If you feel the need to know all the intimate details of Spacey's action carry on. You have no idea how little I care about movie stars lives/lifes.

I care about their arrogance and tendency to preach to the real world while carrying on like pharaohs in their own elite realm of wealth, privilege, and decadence.   But I understand how wingnuts who ride along with these elitists would rather ignore, cover up, trivialize and gloss over the slimy facts.   'Course if these were right wingers, oh then it'd be major league, unforgivable, let's shine a light on all of it, hang 'em high, everybody pile on, utter demonization.

I would think reporting to the police within a week of the incident or it's history seems exceptionally fair (for any 'sex' crime).

If someone sexually assaulted me, I'd be at the police station within the next 30 minutes.

You're obviously either a defense shyster or have absolutely no awareness of the shame and humiliation a victim, perhaps most especially a young victim, can experience after sexual abuse and the hesitancy it gives them about coming forward.   Maybe you should read up on the abuses by Catholic priests, the habit the Catholic church had of covering these up, the emotional scars left on the underage victims, and their inability to come forward then & there.  If you can't understand the total insanity and gross unjustness of your suggested "one week" rule, most others certainly can.  Brag all you want about where you'd be, etc., etc., etc.,  but it means nothing, less than nothing, until and unless you've walked a mile in those shoes.

I think you'll find all the "major media" have mentioned ISIS/terrorism/visa diversity program.  Trump is the President and, like in the Bowe Bergdahl case, his politicizing comments were disgraceful.  Not surprising really, as his whole Presidency has been a disgrace!

ROFL.  Oh really.  They "mentioned it".   Yeah, I guess they probably did "mention it".  I probably blinked.

Disgraceful as you may find the current presidency, the bar was set so low by his predecessor (and was non-existent as far as his opponent was concerned, as Bernie Sanders supporters will now loudly inform you....)  it hardly even matters any more.   Actually, "disgraceful" is just juvenile loser petulance talking though.

  8.

"Foreign visitors can now file for compensation if they are scammed in Thailand"

A thoroughly misleading topic title.  The actual program is very narrowly defined, misses the majority of the scams an actual tourist is apt to encounter, and applies really only to "registered tour companies" and people who use them and end up scammed by them (and only by them).   How many members here on TV even use tour companies, registered or otherwise, for their visits?  This whole topic is pure click bait.

While I'm not going to argue that cases don't exist especially in the movie industry, 'casting couch' being the catch phrase, I often wonder how many people in 'normal' life could be accused of similar transgressions.

Working in offices and going to Xmas parties etc etc where secretaries bums were patted after a few glasses of the falling down water were consumed. As the saying goes, nothing propinqes like propinquity.

Imagine years later when/if the 'patter' rises to a position of public importance and the 'patted' decides for whatever reason to claim she/he was molested by the person 20 years before but doesn't mention that at the time both had had a few drinks and didn't really think about it at the time. By the time all the details of party, both drunk, etc etc come to light the damage has been done.

If it was a weekly happening in the office, forced and unwelcome then that's obviously a whole different ball game.

So you think this is just a matter of Spacey (Weinstein, Hoffman, Affleck, Dick, Cosby, etc., etc., etc.) patting somebody's behind at a Christmas party, do you?  You really need to dig just a bit deeper into the reported facts...

I remember applying in the visa lottery once, many years ago, as although being British and therefore ineligible, I was born in Rhodesia which apparently overrode this! My application didn't get past the first stage.

Shameful, but not surprising, to see Trump and the right politicizing a terrorist attack.

LOL. If Trump didn't bring it up, the major media wouldn't even mention it!   And yeah, like wingnuts don't politicize every time a gun goes off:  you're trying for the Hypocrites Wall of Fame, right?    Puh-leeeeeeeez...

  11. I haven't bought a laptop in a few years now, but the last time I did, it didn't come with any installation disc.  It DID come with a holo-label on the bottom with a Microsoft serial no.  The OS was pre-installed and the HDD had a "Recovery" drive which would essentially do a factory restore including all software & bloatware.   (But you could still MAKE your own recovery DVD; not the same thing as a Windows install disc though.)

The company i work for usually has multiple people that are able to do a job. So if a team requires 3 people to do 100% of the workload there is usually a 4th and 5th person in that department that is able to replace someone even on short notice (sick.. accidents whatever). Skilled people will keept in the company no matter if there is work for them or not. (Skilled people mechanics for example. Not Your average Joe that carries object X to place Y)

Paid vaccation is 27+ per year.

In my case i have 32 days.

I know in America its a different matter.. not much of paid vaccation. Health care is expensive.. peoples mind is set to “need to be useful to the company.. no matter what i cant dissapoint anyone ...“

People call a boss thats way above them.by the first name but once they reach not a certain level of sales or whatever they are fired and replaced. And everyone gets shamed in front of big crowds.. “oh Jeff you did great this year.. but jane over there just did perfect.. everyone applaud jane ...“

At least that's what i was told by a few americans that ended up with burnout or alcohism.

So far i have only seen 2 (young) Americans while in asia. Everyone else between 20 ~ 35 has been mostly from EU.

    Sorry for offtopic .

Yes, I had 30 days paid vacation a year as well.  Plus paid holidays.   But we didn't have a lot of "employee redundancy".  We could request unpaid time off according to the employee guidance, but I never saw anybody do it.  Anybody going to be gone for six months or more would've required a new hire to replace them.  And we weren't exactly entry-level; most of us could well afford extended vacations if we so chose.

And I don't understand how anyone pays into Social Security in the states if they're not working or receiving compensation unless they file a completely fraudulent tax return declaring self-employment income and then paying the self-employment tax (which includes SS) on that.   Most people would consider doing that ridiculous in the first place since you're just creating a tax liability that doesn't actually exist.   From irs.gov, "You cannot make voluntary social security payments if no taxes are due."

LOL.   Yeah.   And the South shall rise again.   Since Nov 8, waah waah waah.   Pathetic.  Certainly persistent.   But pathetic.   And TODAY, boys and girls, is the re-re-re-restart of the Antifa presidential impeachment drive!  Go downtown and smash a window!  And get started on those death threat letters, Christmas (oops, "Winter Festival") is right around the corner!!   (Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders supporters are gathering to "touch" Hillary - and maybe that Wasserman-Schultz witch.  They'll both look good in .........  flames.)

I haven't the faintest idea why any nation allows foreign funded NGOs to operate in its country. They meddle in local elections and stir up discontent among the citizens calling for different political systems and the like.

Well, I DO have a faint idea why.  It's because NGOs can be a conduit for aid money and material from foreign governments, the UN, etc..  The host government holds its nose and tolerates whatever the NGO might be doing or preaching, within limits, because their politicians and bureaucrats reap all kinds of "stuff" from the presence.

Sabaticals are up to a year. I could have gotten 6 months or more if i wanted to.

Just google it if you feel like someone would have a reason to make that up.

Even without unpaid time off from work someone could just stop working for a period of time. I pay the montly fees for retirement benefits myself so i dont even lose money there later.

Well, as I said, German employers must be exceptionally understanding.  Sabaticals certainly aren't unheard of in the states, but not for most working class.  One can certainly leave one's job to travel, but depending on how hard it was to get it in the first place (and we're talking about jobs lucrative enough to pay for extended holidays abroad...), that, in the states at least, and I suspect a lot of places, especially for someone only a couple of years into his employment (23), isn't going to be practical and very much the exception rather than the rule.  (Oh, and the unemployed time would certainly not be creditable for Social Security purposes.)

What you're describing might make a lot of sense to you, but a Thai IO is quite likely to consider it questionable...

  16. I am usually the last to advocate almost any kind of tax, but the prevailing Thai me-first mentality simply doesn't auger well for anti-pollution efforts, and that's culturally embedded.   A baht or two per bag would undoubtedly discourage the habit.  (Stiff fines, widely & reliably enforced, for littering would work even better, but we know that's never going to happen, except maybe vs "rich" farangs who most likely won't even be guilty of it)  But Thailand's problem with this stems as much from lack of litter disposal & collection facility as it does from personal habit.  There's usually simply nowhere to throw one's trash.   A westerner, conditioned to almost always having a trashbin within spitting distance in public areas, doesn't think of just dropping the bag or fast food refuse, and will usually make an effort to find a trash receptacle even if he has to go out of his way to find one, or either carry the stuff back to his room or home & dispose of it there, or in case of the bags reuse them for household trash or some other purpose, but this way of thinking apparently just never enters a local's mind.  'Easier to just throw it down and let somebody else deal with it.  But even plain thoughtlessness isn't the extent of it.  Household trash getting taken out & deliberately dumped and accumulating in ugly heaps here & there around town demonstrates that Thais simply don't care about where their litter and trash ends up and the eyesores & hazards it creates as long as it's not their own living room.  Under those conditions, I guess it takes a tax...

Im from Germany . Im 30 years old. I got 3.5 months leave of absence no problem at all. Its called sabatical and many companies in Switzerland/Germany/austria do that .

I work as Teamleader in a big U.S based company and it was not much of a problem for them . One of my bosses even did that himself in his younger days. ?

Took me not more than 6 months to save up the Money for the trip as well.

The mention was of 6mo or a year!  Not 3 1/2 months. (And the OP could've done 3 months on a single tourist visa and a single entry, so I think it's fairly obvious we're talking longer than 3 1/2 months.)
