The thing that scares me most about living in Thailand is "me". When I retired here in 2010 I was a cool, calm and collected guy who was ready to enjoy this "magical" experience for the rest of my life. After three years of trying to adapt, transition and fit in with the locals and understand "Thainess", I have become one stressed out and frustrated "basket case" of a guy with a hair pin temper. There's absolutely nothing about these rascals that appeals to me and I have become very confrontational. The Thai males in particular are so unpredictable and a wrong comment at just the right time could lead to a disastrous outcome. Leaving Thailand is not an option for me, so I either need to cut out my tongue or find a good natural treatment for stress. Any ideas!

I've had osteoarthritis for years and it has now developed into full blown Fibromyalgia. I used NSAIDS for years and finally had to give them up, Diclofenac Sodium in particular, because they give me Tinnitis (ringing in the ears). I've never tried to Naproxen, so after reading about it here on the forum I ran out and bought some today. It seemed to do well on the first pill so far as relieving the pain and discomfort, but it immediately kicked my ear ringing into high gear. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have a solution for the medication related Tinnitis?

Sorry 'bout that! Free incoming calls......

DTAC just recently announced their Triple Net Package. My wife just got a new sim for her smartphone and pays month to month 299 baht for unlimited internet and 100 minutes worth of calling to any other sim phone and free coming on all calls. I believe I saw in their brochure where unlimited "everything" was under 500 per month.

I took naproxen, as well as glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid for quite a while and only got moderate relief from my arthritis. I am so happy that ZMA works for me and I have been able to stop taking the other drugs. After car and motorcycle accidents about twelve years ago, I was also put on Celebrex and heavier pain killers including Vicodin. Nothing seemed to relieve my pain very well but then to my amazement, physical therapy and ZMA worked for me. Now, so long as I work out several times a week, I am mostly pain free although exercise does sometimes irritate my shattered right shoulder. When that happens I put Voltaren gel on it and the pain soon goes away.
One word of caution to those who buy their own drugs at a pharmacy - there is a tipping point after which your system becomes overloaded with too many side effects from various drugs. I once had a complete hearing loss in my left ear from which I recovered after treatment. I now do careful research on the Web to see if a new drug I am prescribed will be ototoxic (cause damage to the ears) and stop taking it at the first sign that it is affecting my hearing. With my heart disease, prostate problems, hiatal hernia and high cholesterol I am on a lot of drugs so I must be careful about their side effects. As Clint Eastwood said: "Getting old is not for sissies." I am still in pretty good health overall though and get around just fine. The doctors at Bumrungrad manage my condition well and my cardiologist is super. I always leave his office feeling better because he is so positive.
So, DogNo1, if one wanted to try this ZMA, where would he buy it and how much does it cost per day to take. I'll try anything once to rid myself of the pain of Fibromyalgia. If magnesium is what you are lacking, why don't you just try straight mag supplements? It's got to be much less expensive if it works.

I too have never been cheated in a pharmacy (to my knowledge) in over three years in Udon Thani. However, one should also understand that not all pharmacies have the same prices, so it's good to check around for the best prices. I have narrowed my list of "good value" pharmacies down to two, but when I want a new med I still go to both places and check for the best price between the two. Another thing to watch for is that the clerk may try to sell you the most expensive brand first, but then you have to ask him to show you a range of prices/brands for the same medication and then you can choose. I never become a customer of any business on a continuous basis until they have proven to me that they can be trusted. And I seldom use any business or service unless I have first asked around the expat community for a recommendation. Blind trust is pure foolishness! Just remember that we're living in a country where "face" generally takes priority over morality. How many times have you asked a Thai for advice, directions, counsel, etc. and you got a jaded answer? If they don't know the answer they will generally make one up just to cover their ignorance. Here they call it "saving face", but in the West we call it lying! That's a good enough reason for me to enter into any encounter with a certain degree of mistrust and expectation that I won't always be given the truth or correct answer! It works for me.

Both Omeprazole (Prilosec) and Naproxen Sodium (Alleve) have side effects but some people don't suffer from them. I have a severe allergic reaction to Omeprazole and have to take Lansoprazole (Prevacid) instead. Since I discovered ZMA, which is available from almost any supplement store, I don't take Naproxen any longer but didn't suffer any side effects when I did for several years. Acid reflux and stomach bleeding are possible side effects of any NSAID so it's worth having your doctor do an endoscopic examination of your stomach if you experience any discomfort while taking them. For me, ZMA is a wonderful and side-effect free remedy for arthritis and muscle aches. I invite TVers to Google it.
DogNo1, I Googled the ZMA and definitely get contrasting reviews. The sellers seem to really tout the item, but Wikipedia has the following comments (I haven't seen anything mentioning ZMA as a reliever of arthritic pain):
In 2004, a study funded by a research grant from Cytodyne (another supplement producing company) with 42 resistance trained males showed that ZMA supplementation had no significant effects on total and free testosterone, IGF-1, growth hormone, cortisol, the ratio of cortisol to testosterone, or muscle and liver enzymes in response to training. No significant effects were observed in changes in strength, upper or lower body muscle endurance, or anaerobic sprint capacity.[11]
In another study done in 2006, a team of German scientists conducted a study on the effect of ZMA and testosterone levels in the body.[12] The result showed an increase in zinc secretions in urine making it much darker like blood, but no effect on the level of testosterone in the body.
Sounds like "snake oil" to me, but if it works for you then good on you!

Both are readily available at most all pharmacies and require no prescription. Omeprazole is sold/manufactured under many names locally, so don't let them rip you for some imported brand name.

IMA_FARANG, I just looked up your flight on kayak.com and you could have bought the ticket through United online for $1592, but of course you must use a credit card. And no 1000 baht service charge, so you could have saved a smooth $100.

I am planning a trip back to the USA later this year and am wondering if I can use my LG smartphone once I arrive. Of course, I purchased the phone here last year and it uses two separate sim cards, one of which is the new DTAC program called TriNet whereby I can make calls and use unlimited internet. Is this sort of thing available in the US now? I've been away for three years, so I'm not familiar with all the techno changes. Actually, I'll only be in the States for two weeks, so I need something that will be a single purchase with no contract type of arrangement. This is my first post on ThaiVisa, so I'm thanking you all in advance for your generous responses and advice.

Hello everyone! I'm from Knoxville, Tennessee in the US of A and have lived in Udon Thani for the past three years. I follow the local forums in Udon, but just felt like I needed to expand my horizons a bit to help pass the time. Looking forward to getting to know all of you and hopefully making some meaningful contributions with my posts. Best regards to all!

My Planned estimated monthly budget for Thailand
in General Topics
Posted
Kscott, it might help if you would reprint your budget and convert the numbers to Thai Baht. There are many forum members here who do not understand your currency, but we all have learned to shape our budgets around the Baht since that is what we are spending. Make it easier for us and you'll get more responses. Hope all works out for you!
