  1. I sent an email to the Embassy regarding this incident and received a reply that my appreciation would be forwarded to Larry, I then sent the following email and have received no reply as yet.

"What I would REALLY like to know is will the Embassy be taking up with the Phuket Governor and / or other officials the incident(s) in order for them to understand this behaviour of "fobbing off" blatant scams and rip offs (and giving "lip service" to cover it up with no action), threats made (to the party concerned and to Larry) and the obvious compliance of local police (confiscating a passport and using the guise of making a copy?) is not acceptable, by any standard, international or moral.

I can imagine how that poor man felt being locked up and intimidated in a Thai police station and in the end just being happy to pay his way out. He would have been terrified and that is what these "thugs" play on.

Someone needs to make a stand and I am proud that Larry has done so but feel he must also receive the FULL backing of the embassy so that it may be taken seriously by the Thais responsible. Capitulation is only another method of condoning this behaviour. I realise that there is probably little that can be done in reality, but PLEASE at least register disapproval officially.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke"

    Silence is Golden...I guess

I'd like to think that the Embassy is doing the right here and waiting until Larry is safely off-site before before escalating this situation.

If the Australian embassy were to do something about this,it would be with a higher authority in Bangkok, secondly, they would not waste their breath, because they already know what will happen, absolutely nothing, thirdly, they are probably not happy that Mr.C, voiced his view so publicly on behalf of Australia.

  2. Large balls, good morals and a disregard for your own safety are the main requirements for the job. Not so many real applicants I'm sure.

I think Mr Cunningham may have put a chink in the armour!!

Enjoy your grandkids and Well done.

Can one just pull back on this and put it behind him? he lives in this place, does business there and has to shut up and watch the corruption and scams keep going on around him, without a single thing he can do about it and now probably be taken for a fool by the governor's office, as another loud mouthed falang who got taught a lesson, the good die hard in this country, I wish him all the best.

  3. Why go swimming when there are sharks in the water, why are you all surprised at the result?....coffee1.gif

People 'go swimming' because they have absolutely no other choice. They will not get a loan from a bank and more than likely have no family or friends able or willing to loan to them.

I cited above that rates locally where I live can be 20-50% a day. Customers are typically a poor roadside vendor who will borrow money to buy produce that they will sell during the day to just about get by and hopefully have enough to repay the loan.

It must be a joyless existence.

If i had to borrow money at a rate more than i can earn, for a business that should be already feeding my family, i would rather shut shop, thats a choice.

Not much of a choice is it, give up your only source of income. No welfare system in Thailand so I'd guess this was a fairly desperate choice to borrow from loan sharks.

I am not saying this is the case, but, half the vendors in my neighborhood owe money to loan sharks, why you ask? gambling.

A better choice than not being able to at least have the chance to feed your family at all you bellend?

The proof is in the pudding, right in front of us, this is not a good choice, thats why loan sharking is supposed to be illegal. it rips people off!!

  6. i used to love thailand, over the two years i have lived here it has manifested into hatred, i am hoping to be out of here come new year

Ive spent quite a bit of time in Thailand over the last 30years and after about 10 years of southern tourist areas I also started to hate the place, a friend suggested that I have a look around the Chiang Mai area, the best thing Iever did its the REAL THAILAND. Give it a try.

Although Chiang mai is a sleepy town, more and more tourists are coming here, which means the scammers will be looking for new areas and opportunities, i like it here, but fear,it is changing to fast to attract more tourists, Chiang mai loves money and is starved compared to the south, we can only hope that the northern style of hospitality will remain, it is after all, still the land of smiles up here.
