  1. For the support Thai wife extension of stay the money can be in a joint account with your wife.  You do not normally need any bank account information for obtaining the visa from a Consulate.

You need to show the 400,000 on a bank statement though don't you, to get the 'O' VISA?

Post #11, first paragraph, third sentence. :o

You need a marriage certificate/copy and copy of her ID card.

    So chaps, to summarise.

Go to Penang to change my 'B' to an 'O'. I will only need my wifes' ID card and our marriage certificate to do this. When this expires, I will need to go to Penang again but this time with the marriage certificate, ID card and proof of THB 400,00 in the bank.

    Correcto?

No need to change your Visa... When B expires go to Penang and get the O with ID card and Marriage certificate...

You only have to prove bt 400,000 when you apply for the 1 year extension

    totster :D

Got it mate, thanks. Can you tell me how long the 'O' lasts? Is it the same length as the 'B', with the extra 3 months on the end if you leave and come back just before it expires?

  3. If this helps!!!!!.......I was recently in Vientiane  for a renewal of my multiple entry 'O' visa. I could only get a single 90 day 'O' visa...they told me that they did not/would not issue multiple entry 'O' visa. I asked 'why not if I could do this in Penang'.....and was met with a large amount of mumbo jumbo which left my Thai wife perplexed also, but not willing to push the matter. So, I have to make a trip to Aus in August so will do it in Brisbane...(very easy to deal with).

Its a shame as I live in Khon Kaen and Vientiane is so convenient.

Has anyone out there managed to get a Multiple Entry from Vientiane...?????

    Cheers

Thanks Aussman. Can you tell me how I reply to a post without quoting it?

  4. Thanks for the reply.

I'm on a 'B' to study for a TEFL in Bangkok. I had a go at the course in Febuary but something came up and I didn't complete it. I'm now in the UK working and will return to Bangkok next month where I will complete it. After I've done this I intend to look for work teaching in Udon as I like it there. I've been married to my Thai wife for six years. She is originally from Sakorn Nakhon but I met her in Khon Kaen. We have lived in the UK up to now. Our first child will be born around Christmas time and it's our intention to be in Thailand at that time.

If I have not found full-time work by the time my visa expires I believe I cannot re-new my 'B'? I would have to get an 'O'? Then I can continue my hunt for work in Udon? Could you tell me how I would go about the visa process in Nong Khai and Laos?

    Cheers.

I think that Khon Kaen is a much better city than Udon. Why on earth would someone choose to live in Udon if they didn't have ties there?

I guess it is midway between your wife's home and Khon Kaen.

Jobs for teachers in KK are much better. KK Uni is great to teach at. In a different class to anything Udon has.

Good luck and btw, you can work on an "o" visa. Send me a PM if you need any help in finding work. I have contacts in Udon, Sakorn Nakhon, and Khon Kaen.

Thanks. I'm keeping an open mind on where I will teach in Isaan. I like both Khon Kaen and Udon. I really liked Khon Kaen but my wife has family in Udon and it's only an hour and a half drive to her family home in Sakorn Nakhon province. By the way, I've never been to Sakorn Nakhon city. How does it compare in general to KK and UT?

When I go for my 'O' visa does the account need to be in my name? If so, which bank will do this? Thanks again.

  5. Always used Nokia until I changed to a Sharp GX15 a couple of months ago.

Bought it on a trip to the UK, and had it unblocked there as I think this model is unavailable in Thailand.

A good price, small with a large screen, and very happy with it.

    Review at http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/sharp-gx15.htm

    Mike.

That's a good website for mobile reviews. I used it a lot when I was deciding what one to buy. In the end I bought a Nokia 6230. Not a bad phone but the screen is quite small and not very bright (I wished I'd bought the 6230i). Also, a lot of dust seems to get inside the phone and settle on the screen (I think it's from the little speaker on the side). I was going to get a Samsung but I heard they were a pain in the bum to connect to a PC when trying to download photo's. The Sharp phones look good. My sister has one and the screen's very clear and bright whatever angle you look at it. Not so with my Nokia.

  6. I bought a second hand, one year old Toyota Tiger 3L diesel EFI Hilux, 2 years ago from a place on Sukhumvit, just before Pattaya Klang in Pattaya, and so far no problems at all.

Glad I bought it at 473,000 baht. Full service records with 21,000 K on the clock, and the gamble paid off.

    Mike.

I was looking at Isuzu 3L, 4-door, twin air-bag pick-ups. They were around 700,000 in April this year. You can save 8,000 if you pay cash for the whole amount. Slightly cheaper in Bangkok and Chonburi than in Udon.

Sorry, forgot to add that there was 7-10 day waiting period in all the showrooms I visited. Isuzu 2WD pick-up's were a bit cheaper but not that much. I drove an Isuzu 2WD pick-up around for 5 weeks this year, doing quite a few thousand kilometres. Best get the 4WD if you can afford the little extra. Better for overtaking, especially on hills. There's always the Toyota Hilux which is nice. Slightly more expensive than Isuzu but only has an air-bag for the driver. Could be dodgy for the missus/girlfriend.

  8. Not raining in Bangkok.  You can probably obtain a single entry O visa without much trouble in Vientiane but not sure about a multi entry valid for one year (which is what most people want if not sure of employment).  For the one year type Penang is always the best choice.  At any Consulate you will need your marriage certificate and a copy of her ID card.

You are best served to extend your stay at immigration on the basis of supporting Thai wife so that you do not tie your visa to employment that might end and leave you in the lurch.

Thanks for the advice lopburi3. Just sent you another post on 'visa' section.

  9. Metered but unused in Penang.  Singapore used.

Continental Hotel on Penang Road is a good place at a little over 1,000 baht per night.  But there is also a Grand Continental which is not so good.

I would plan two nights in Penang due to air schedules and likely late arrive of morning flight.

    Okey dokey.

Is the consulate far from the airport (Penang)? Nice to Know in advance in case I'm taken the 'scenic route' by the taxi driver.

Also, do I need the exact address of the consulate or is it well known by taxi driver's?

I appreciate the help mate. Cheers.

  10. 1.  Financial requirements are for extension of stay inside Thailand.

    2.  Penang is probably the better option unless you are sure about all requirements are going to be met.

    3.  Take taxi to hotel or guest house of your choice.  Arrange for visa service from hotel or travel shop to provide visa form.  Fill out form and photos and sign.  Give with passport to visa agent with money.  If done in morning next afternoon receive passport and visa and exit.

    4.  DIY:  in morning get taxi and agree on return fare to Royal Thai Consulate.  Go to Consulate/obtain application sheet/fill out and submit with passport/photos.  Receive receipt number for pickup next afternoon.  Next afternoon repeat taxi trip and have passport with visa.

If you need hotel/guest house recommendations provide a price range and I am sure someone will have current information.

Remember that Consulate will be closed weekends and holiday of both Thailand and Malaysia (or Singapore if you go there).

    Thanks very much Lopburi3.

I suppose anything up to £50/THB3600 would be my budget for accomodation if for one night only. Half that per night if I needed to stay longer.

Are the taxis metered in Penang/Singapore?

  11. Hello all.

I'm British, on a non-immigrant 'B' to study for a TEFL, with the visa expiring in December this year. I plan to leave the Kingdom a few days before this date so I can get the extra 3 months. Before these 3 months are up I have been advised to go to Penang or maybe Singapore to get another 'B' if I have found work teaching or change it to a 'O' if I'm still looking (I am married to a Thai lady and am aware of the financial requirements).

My question is, what do I do when I get to Penang/Singapore? I mean basically from when I arrive at either one of these airports through to finding immigration and obtaining a visa. The whole lot really including transport from the airport and accomodation in Penang/Singapore.

    Thanks.

  12. Cheers Totster.

I asked someone else this question before and they said Penang.  I presumed they had said that because they lived in Bangkok.  I thought I would be able to re-new a visa in any country (apart from Burma) that bordered the region of Thailand that I happened to be in when my visa expired.  Strange one that.

One more question (sorry to bore you).  Can I work on an 'O' as a teacher and will it give me a straight year in Thailand without the 90 day thing?

Sorry mate, I know it's getting late over there.

You can obtain a Work permit using your Non Imm O visa, you will get the year extension as long as the employer has satisfied certain obligations such as capital and Thai / Farang ratio.... but I'm sure you would be able to just do this on your O visa (based on marriage) with bt400000 in the bank or if your monthly salary is bt40000 or more.

BTW, i'm in UK at present.. :o

    totster :D

I'm in Essex. I can't wait to go back. I'm fed up of talking about the weather. Where are you?

  13. Are you sure you have a "B" and not an "ED"... anyway not that it matters to the reply much.... :o

You will be able to get a Non Imm O visa based on the fact that you are married to a Thai.  This has to be applied for outside of Thailand. This could then be extended for a year (which would mean no three monthly visa runs) as long as you satisfy the conditions, mainly having an income of Bt40,000 per month or bt400 000 in your Thai bank account.

As regards to where to get this visa, i asked this question also and the opinion seems to be that the best place to obtain the Visa is Penang.  No one has given advice as to whether it can be obtained easily In Vientiane/Laos.

    Totster  :D

  14. I think you need to tell us under what circumstances are you staying in Thailand.  I.e if you have a non Imm B now, why can you not get another, or why would you need to change from a B to an O, and what qualifies you to get this Visa...

    More info please..  :o

  15. I went to Khon Kaen about 7 years ago (the first girlfriend was from there) and I thought it was a great place to be. The people were very friendly, the food cheap and I felt very safe.

I have also contemplated the rural life, but cannot get over the fact that I would be living completely Thai, with no farangs around me to have a chat. Obviously many places rural have farangs living there, but the place where my wife comes from is completely Thai and I have never seen a foreigner.

Anyway hats off to you guys who can do it.

That's where I met my wife in 1998. I really liked Khon Kaen. I used to stay in Kasinkorntungsang Road - not far from the museum. I remember places like Ubon Rat dam, Fairy Plaza complex, the old cinema and some decent shops. Had a great time.

I also like Udon Thani. Bit busier now than back then. Shame they got rid of the beer garden next to Charoensi - I liked the live music in there. Good atmosphere. A very good DIY store in Udon now.

    I too like Isaan mak-mak!

  16. Our Home in Thailand is on the 2022, about 6 km before Ampher Phen.

I love Lamb :D  (Please no Welsh jokes) and if there was a heard of sheep any where within Eating distance I would have been there with my knife and fork.

If you find evidence of lamb in the area please let me know, my wife does a lovely Sunday dinner. :o

    edd

I love lamb massaman. It's not the same with chicken.

  17. yeah, that always bugged me about Thai TV. The only difference is when the Isaan servants get scared, their hair doesn't stick straight up and their eyes don't bug out. All kidding aside, I wonder how many rich Thai familys have Isaan people for servants.

I've been told by Isaan people that they're no longer happy working as maids - they would rather work in factories. Most maids now come from other countries bordering Thailand.

  18. Been trying to call the GF, for the past day and the line says there is a fault, or it is not possible to connect.

Have tried 4 different numbers (her friends) all to the same response.

    Anyone know whats happening?

    Anyone with the same problem?

what phone co are you using in the UK ?

i find the mega cheap outfits always a problem .

    very unreliable .

4p-5p is usually ok /cheaper is not

    bargaindial.co.uk is ok

The wife uses one that is 2p per minute to any landline or mobile in Thailand if you are on BT. Always connects quickly.

  19. Hi my son was born 2 months ago as I am a British citizen is my son entitle to a British passport as I want to take him next July to England for 3/4 months I already have his birth certifcate translated into English when I was out there last month also what would be the price.

    cheers

    Jason

    :o

    .

I've just had a look on the 'British Embassy, Bangkok' website (sorry, can't do the underlined link thing yet) and it's got all the info. you'll need.

  20. Have  a  look  at  this, it  relates  to  Canada  but  i  would  think  the  UK  is  the  same    http://www.thaicongenvancouver.org/Citizenship.htm

    Thanks for that.

Can anyone confirm if our baby is born in the UK, he/she will have dual citizenship? We would like this for the child.

The plan is to have our baby in Thailand BUT most of the healthcare we will need is free in the UK (I knew there was a reason for all that tax and national insurance I paid).
