  1. Thanks for those tips. I've got mine backed up on Acronis (made a CD) and then my SSD crashed. Up and running on an extra HD (just with basic OS) and my computer help guy is coming over today and hopefully we'll restore the SSD using Acronis, the disc plus the backup to my external HD.

Eh, wish me luck! I'll show him the info about the disc number and also about EaseUS.

Thanks again, guess I'll google dynamic volume and MAID!

  2. VF you are having a lot of fun.

Do you ever stop at one of those little covered shacks for a breather? Or do you just find the shade of a tree somewhere? Are there any fences around those farmed fields?

  3. Wow amazing!

About the boats -- The narrow design reminded me of a dugout, and I was wondering if they were somehow derived from that shape. But I didn't realize those were metal, I thought they were wooden.

  4. OK since you don't mind questions:

What is that type of boat called? Is it a regional design or common all over Thailand? What is the origin of it?

I see a paddle in one of the boats, and no oarlocks, so may I presume the boats are paddled like a canoe? Are motors ever used?

What's the thing sticking up vertically at the stern of one of the boats?

The reservoir looks rather small, I wonder why so many boats, and who owns them?

What are they used for - fishing?

I believe there were similar boats in a different picture, one of them was half-sunk.

    Thanks!

    :)

    Sorry, I am awfully curious, aren't I?

    :)

OK to even out the exchange, here is a link to a song from Peru that I like, it is totally off-topic:

  5. My Galaxy Nexus came out of the box with ICS. The update the other day required a reboot of the phone, which normally isn't required for app updates.

But thanks, those are interesting points you brought up and which I had never even considered.

Funny thing is, as the first phone to ship in the US with ICS, not all apps worked with my phone. When the SIII came out however, it seemed that many apps were updated right at that time.

One reason I bought the Galaxy Nexus was that it comes with "Vanilla" android OS, ie. it does not have any "UI" User Interface from the various manufacturers such as

    Samsung -- TouchWiz

    Motorola -- MotoBlur

HTC -- Sense (this is supposed to be quite nice actually but updates never happen for some phones.)

    and so forth.

I wanted this both to be able to custom tweak the phone (which I haven't done), and also so any android OS upgrades could be done without having to wait for re-tooling of the various user interfaces.

  6. Yeah maybe the best thing is to keep moving forward and don't have further contact with her.

Ignore the put-downs from people here. Probably they mean well, thinking that by shaming you it will prevent further mistakes. I'm not convinced of how constructive that is, however.

    Good luck.

    :)

PS I know there are many people here who have been in the same boat. I don't blame you for discussing it here, in whom else would you confide that you fell in love with a prostitute, your mom/clergyman/sister? I suspect some, but not all, of the harshest critics are exactly the same ones who have been in your situation.

  7. PS. I have looked at SSDs for sale previously. My desktop SSD did crash and it is true there was no recovering it, although I purchases an external case for it and tried to get it up and running again.

Obviously I have a large HD as well so I didn't lose any data, it was mainly a convenience issue of programs and settings and so forth. Backing up everything with Acronis now.

What I wanted to say though, was that when I was looking at the SSds, my computer whiz friend advised me to look at the reviews on NewEgg, and to sort the search result by average review score. That is when I realized that certain models do have high failure rates.

As someone mentioned above. The overall failure rate may be the same but I'm hoping to weed out the high failure models by looking at the reviews.

Also there's the issue of what can be recovered from an SSD that is toast.

On my ipad, sure everything (which isn't much) is kept on the SSD. But on other devices, aren't they using the SSD for the OS and programs, and putting data on a HD? Sure Windows 7 tends to want to put files in my SSD drive, so every now and then I have to move a few things over.

PSS. It seems that W7 takes up about 25G on my SSD.

  8. Like others, I also recommend a SSD as a great upgrade option for old laptops (and PCs).

About 12 months ago I put a 60GB SSD in a 5yr old PC in my office. The PC went from "needs to be replaced asap" to "dam_n, I can't find an excuse for a new PC". Admittedly I also upgraded from 1 to 2GB of RAM at the same time. I only stopped using it recently due to a power supply failure.

About the same time I replaced the 160GB hard disk in my 3yr old netbook with a 60GB SSD. Again, the performance increase was well worth it. I also bought a 150 Baht 2.5inch USB hard disk enclosure. Put the old hard disk in it, and carry it around with my 100GB of music when I need to.

For me, changing from hard disk to SSD has given the most noticeable performance increase of a component upgrade that I can remember over the past decade.

Great idea. What processor does your netbook have? Mine has got one of those Atom processors.

I've had an SSD drive on my desktop for a year and a half now, it is very quick and just the OS and programs are kept there.

My netbook is so slow it makes me crazy, perhaps an SSD would do the trick. That vs. buying a new "Ultrabook", as the SSD notebooks seem to be called nowadays.

  9. Nice story there.

About the retreat people, yes now I see the two in the back. Interesting how they are mostly all dressed in white.

Also noting the diagonal cut marks on the trees, any idea what those are?

The people on the retreats, do they just go randomly whenever, or is it considered something done at a particular point in life, like the becoming a monk thing?

I know, lots of little questions, I just find it interesting.

  10. This compliments my reactions to this and all other tragedies, accidents or whatever involving our young.

My daughter is 18 and has just started her second semester at university and evertime this happens especially when they are studying it hits me very hard indeed, triggering off my gut wrenching reactions and it take days to get back to normal.

Many of our members as a first instance also have young daughters and sons and god knows what we would feel like had it been one of our own.

So once again I ask for respect, compassion and empathy to once again consider this as we always do in these tragic circumstances and indeed is already happening.

I,m not saying we should not debate it by the way, just the application of sensitivity and holding back on silly remarks that IMHO do not belong here would be appreciated.

And not just for the young in my view.

  11. You are obviously a smart young guy, what I mean to say is there is no point in resting on your laurels at this stage.

Get out there and go to school, for example, and people will notice you as you go about your daily activities.

You may well even encounter some other students who want to practice their English.

    Good luck!

  12. Thanks for posting, chonabot.

It is very easy to play devil's advocate, which basically presumes that your perception and judgement of the situation is completely wrong. That despite the fact that you were there to experience it first hand and we were not, and that many of us can recognize that scenario from our own youthful and adult experience.
