  1. My experience is that Bangkok Bank in Central Plaza is really good and so is Siam Commerical near Thapae Gate. Both had very fluent staff that made the process very simple and easy.

  2. Where are you based? We are a small NGO and have an accountant in Chiang mai who deals with all the taxes and provides advice. Try one wherever you are.

As far as expats. Most people I've met don't pay. But, if you want to be honest, you're supposed to pay any income on your salary in Thailand and income that you bring into the country. (But I could be wrong on this).

  3. My suggestions:

    1. Don't go with Legal and Business Experts in Hillside 4. They're good but pricey.

    2. Khun "Joey" (Thanakorn Viwatronaket) is good adn cheap compared to above. His office is located next to the WETV office on Huey Keuw. He has good English. Tel 053-405134

    3. You can also get accountants to do it and they are even cheaper than lawyers. Our accountant is great and has great English. Khun Saranya Chotica at Perfect Accounting (053-854383)

  4. Hello Chiang Rai Forum

I am looking for a place in Chiang Rai that can hold about 30 people. I know that some of the larger hotels probably have rooms for rent but generally at high prices. Do any of you have any suggestions for alternatives? (ie churches, organizations or offices that rent out rooms). We do not need something too fancy.

Also, is anyone aware of a place to rent an LCD projector in the city?

    Thanks.

  5. I never said that you were stereotyping. I said that maybe it was their way of dealing with constant stereotyping. Whether you were or not, I'm sure they face it often. Anyway, I don't want to argue. I'm glad that you did what you thought was right. Cheers

  6. I'm white, a Christian and living in Chiang Mai .... People always assume that I'm a missionary here.

I can relate somewhat with these guys when they made a joke about osama because I'm sure that they get labelled in the same type of manner all the time. While I don't want to make light of your observations, could it possibly their way of dealing with constant stereotyping?

  7. I had the same problem. They took a week for them to get my connection finally working - it started last night to work properly.

Keep calling and visiting them... they finally flipped some port and now it works. Good luck.

  8. I've read the other posting about VONAGE in Thailand but I'm too much of a novice in computers to understand all the "ports" and specifications that go along with it.

I live in Chiang Mai and have a TOT line and ADSL through them. I want to order Vonage but I have heard that it may not work here. Does anyone have Vonage working with a TOT line? If so, is there any tips that you'd suggest to make it work?

    Thanks

  9. Thanks for all your stories and suggestions. I'll have to check out the book at Raintree and we're now thinking of "shopping around" for doctors just to see what is available. MANY have suggested Dr. Udom but your story above makes us a bit hestitant now. Going back to Canada is still an option and we realize that it will cost us a fair coin to do so. However; it's our first child and we're both being extra-cautious about safety. If any of you can compare the standard of care between here and Canada during deliveries, I'd love to hear your opinions. Thanks again.

  10. No, it was cheaper than 15k. I think it was about 5000 for the year or you could buy a lifetime membership. I think the lifetime was about 8000 plus a monthly fee of about 800 (guarenteed never to change).

  11. We use www.viator.ca. It's for Canadians who no longer have provincial health coverage. It was recommended to us by other Canadians who have had good experience with it.

We also used TIC (Travel Insurance Co-ordinators) as excess medical coverage while we still had provincial coverage.

I'd make sure to check your provincial plan. We're from Alberta and we lost our provincial coverage 3 months after being outside the province.

  12. WETV is the cable company that charges on 350 a month. It's ok but has the basic channels that farang want (BBC, CNN, etc). I think that it's only available near CENTRAL dept store. Their office is about a block from CENTRAL. Other than that, I think you have to get UBC that is about 1200 a month plus installation.

  13. We've recently found out that we're pregnant and are looking at what options are available for us while living in Chiang Mai (Due in Dec). While we're still debating whether to go home (Canada) or have the baby in Chiang Mai, we'd like to learn a bit more about other people's experiences here. At the moment, we've had our first hospital visit at the Chiang Mai Ram with a new doc named Supachai. Other than one person suggesting a doctor at Lanna Hospital (Dr Udom), we don't really know what's available or recommended. If you have any advice, stories or resources that you'd like to offer, please do so. Thanks
