  1. Some applications like kmail are superb but only work with KDE libraries. Now I avoid them. Porting Thunderbird is easy. I mostly avoid webmail because I don't want my private emails sitting on external mail servers. I say mostly because I use IMAP when I travel.

  2. First I use portable applications. Firefox Thunderbird etc. No Kmail for example. Then I have my FTP server to backup all of my home directory regularly, including hidden files of course. For the look and feel, I avoid very fine tuning (widgets etc). When I set up a new PC I don't care too much about the interface, KDE, gnome or cinnamon etc. Just copy back my home files, install the apps with my command line. And it works. Before I was using Gentoo, I learned a lot thanks to it, and then I got bored. Now I am too lazy ...

  3. Ha ha the whole story is to have a configuration such as it takes you a short time to switch. Same with my smart phones and tablets. All under CyanogenMod, all with the same screens.

  4. About the apps you like, why don't you create a command line to install all of them at once ? Then no issue at all. Sudo apt-get install xxx yyy zzz. You take time to write this line only once on your short life ... Then you can switch distros easily. I use Mint because of the proprietary drivers.

  5. Right at the beginning of our relationship, some 18 years ago, I made things clear concerning money :

1- OK to give some limited amount of money to the parents / family but within a given annual budget (see it as charity).

2- OK to help to a certain point in case of sudden problems such as accidents, health worries etc.

3- No way we would give money to help in case of misconduct such as illegal activities, gambling losses, loans etc.

4- No loans to thai people (avoid at all cost).

    >> Point 3 is really important since the situation can quickly become a mess in Thailand. Brother does stupid things, cannot pay, has to sell some plot of land etc. This happens all the time and people rely on the family to help, which I think is not fair. Each person has to be responsible about his own decisions.

    >> Point 4 : if you lend money to thai people, better consider it a gift ... And it can be dangerous. To clean the debt, you can be killed. The price for a hitman can be as low as 10,000B.

    - The important point here is long term planning and responsibility, two things which are missing in Thailand, the second point not in women but very much in men.

It has worked a charm. Everybody understands. Many times this frame has been tested but I stood firm and I did well ...

    No discussion about money !

Note : the most "funny" case of testing my frame happened when a family member had build a house on a rented plot of land (yes !) and was in trouble because the owner suddenly wanted to sell the land. For a very hefty price of course, since there was a nice house on it. What a joke ! Not my problem. No money. If the family member was stupid enough to do that, why have the burden fall on somebody else shoulders ? Tell me ?

  6. Some more points :

    - No compass in the IQ9. No big deal but you cannot use apps like Skymap.

    - The GPS in the IQ9 is really poor compared with the Samsung. The mega sees 3x more sats in my short tests.

    - There are two versions of the IQ9 : IQ9A and IQ9. The radios are different (850Mhz for IQ9 and 900Mhz for IQ9A). Be careful ! The IQ9A stand for AIS I understand. For Truemove, the IQ9 is the right one. The Mega radio seems to cover all bands.

I still have both phones for test and I am unclear which one I would rather buy. Both are very good products I think.

  7. @Digitalbanana, you are confusing the mega 6.3 and the mega 5.8. They are very different phones. The mega 6.3 is much better than the mega 5.8 technically speaking. Personnally, I think it is too big for a phone. I would rather buy the last nexus 7 if I wanted this size. Plus a bluetooth earpiece. The mega 5.8 is still very confortable in hand and very usable as a phone.

  8. I have had these three phones in hands for enough time to test them thoroughly. They are dual sim phones based on Android.

-IQ6 : imo stay away from this phone. The processor is not powerful enough. The video camera lags. You may be able to shoot reasonably well if you kill all background applications first but this is a pain. The photo camera is quite good, on the contrary. The GPS is poor, often dropping the signal. For the rest, the phone is working fine.

-Samsung mega 5.8 : no problem at all with this phone. It does what it is supposed to do. The screen resolution is poor on paper but you don't notice it in reality (at least with my own eyes). It is not a native Android OS. Samsung have their own Touchwiz layer on top. I don't like it too much. For example, I think the native camera software is more intuitive. I would say that the Samsung mega 5.8 is a very good deal for the 12,500 baths price.

-IQ9 : I have just got this phone for a few days and the problems found with the IQ6 seem to be solved, certainly thanks to the quad core 1,2Ghz processor. Except for the GPS, which still looks slow to acquire the signal, even with A-GPS activated. The video camera is fluid. The still camera looks impressive although I doubt 18M pixels makes a real difference. In darkness, none of the 3 cameras did perform well without flash, contrarily to a Samsung Galaxy 3 for example. Instead of so many more pixels, a better sensitivity would have been better. The screen is HD 1280x720 and is very good. But when I put the mega and the IQ9 side to side, I cannot honestly say the IQ9 better screen resolution is noticeable.

Conclusion : Mega or IQ9 (if you like big screens) ? The mega is 12,500B and the IQ9 is 9,900B. At this point I would buy the IQ9.

  9. Go into "settings", scroll down, go into "developpers options", then check "USB debugging".

Then, when you connect your tablet to any computer, it will be seen as a MTP device like any memory card (the tablet should ask you for a connection permission first).

At least this worked for me on several tablets / android phones.
