  2. Some details about the MobileTopup.com service:

    • There is a fee for Paypal, see below for explanation.
    • There is no fee for Credit / Debit.
    • Credit cards are processed using the Thai company Omise.co - who tokenizes the card details for merchants and stores them on their PCI compliant servers.  Likely the most secure CC processing in Thailand.
    • Omise uses transactions with 3D Secure ( no chargebacks), and clear via Bangkok Bank in Thai Baht.
    • A credit / debit must work with 3D Secure ( most do) and be able to make a payment in Thailand to work.
    • Fees explained:  Profit on 100 topup is 4 Baht, and Paypal charges about 5-6 Baht, not including cost of chargebacks / fraud, so more like a cost of about 20 Baht.  Therefore, a premium is charged for using Paypal.
    • Designed to help the debit/ credit card using foreign market who want a simple top up solution.
  3. There is a beta launch of a new online top up service for prepaid users here, that should be useful for many of the people here - if you're on prepaid.

    From the promo email:

    • Fee just 4% - 100 Baht will cost you 104 Baht.
    • Automatic reoccurring monthly billing
    • Top up amounts are 50 - 800 Baht
    • Fair Thai Baht credit card processor
    • Support for True Move, DTAC Happy and AIS 12Call PAYG

The beta is Facebook sign in only, and credit cards or local bank visa / master ATM cards are the payment method.

For the geeks, this is a Node.js build on Singapore SSD hosting, taking advantage of Cloudflare CDN, so should be quite fast.

    Anyone tried it yet?

  4. If you own one of the DTAC 7 day unlimited SIMs and you're heading into day 8, there are a couple options for you with daily and weekly add on data packages. You need to load up enough credit for getting any of these packages, and account for the 7% tax on each. ( 100 Baht = 107 Baht with 7% VAT)

The Daily Unlimited package is 49 Baht per day. You get 150 MB of 3G/4G data then unlimited 2G speeds after that. Does not auto renew.

Type this code in and press send: *104*29*5720283*9#

For 200 Mb of 3G/4G data, and 2G after, this a volume plan and means it's finished after you use 200 MB or 7 days pass. Price is 79 Baht. Does not auto renew.

Type this code in and press send: *104*322* 5720283*9#

The biggest weekly package is 1GB of 3G/4G data and 2G after that. Price is 199 Baht and does not auto renew.

Type this code in and press send: *104*28*5720283*9#

You can have more than one package at a time, so if you want to do a daily package during a weekly package, that can be done.

  5. DTAC Call center confirmed the last day for register is Dec 31st 2014 even though the site says Jan31st, and you get 6 months of 3G/4G double data. After that it would cut in half, which just means in 6 months see what their new promo is.

Just make sure you have enough credit then enter the code into your phone. If you have a data package already, make sure it's expired or canceled. These are currently the biggest plans of all 3 carriers so if you like your mobile data, these are for you. If you have the DTAC tourist sim, you can get one of these packages after your week of free 3G data.

  7. Having had both, and having run into an overpriced phone bill on post-paid, I'm now a fan a of pre-paid. The thinking is that post-paid was easier and better, but the reality is you're locked into a bill each month, and a likely candidate for billing issues. Prepaid keeps the monthly telco spend real, and you're much more clear on what you spend.

What do you prefer, pre or post paid? (assuming you have the choice, of course)

  8. I've had sucess at https://localbitcoins.com for buying / selling BTC with THB. Takes 3-5 minutes for some transactions.

5 years from now when we look back on the dawn of a borderless currency that crushes operations like Western Union, Moneygram, and SWIFT, it will be so obvious that this was the time for a frictoinless currency transfer system to exist.

The current valuation is just a side show to the fact that crypto currency is here to stay becuse is solves the huge problem for moving money.

  9. All nice and good, but is there anywhere in Bangkok with blazing fast upload speed so I could upload my 200GB + photo library in a couple hours?

I am starting to agree. I have uploaded quite a bit, but it is a slow process. It is like giving somebody 30 million baht, and telling them they can only spend 100 baht a day, smile.png

Maybe that's their trick. 1TB free, but they throttle it. I did a whopping 16 photos uploaded with their upload tool letting it run all night.
