Koh Chang has everything you are looking for, but is rather like Samui was 20-30 years ago. I prefer Samui because of all the facilities, but would avoid Chaweng and Lamai. There are some lovely parts in the North between Maenam and Nathon, and again Southwards from Nathon, which are completely unspoilt yet near a beach, some with reasonable waves depending on the time of year and how far the sea goes out!

Maybe a second airport on Samui while they are at it !!

Ferrari 456 - completely useless! Needed charging overnight after only 2 days use, otherwise a flat battery. I also changed to a Citroen C5 Hdi with a bolt on hydrogen cell, which gives more power and extra 12 mpg, as well as no emissions from the exhaust except water vapour. Getting a Visa is a good idea, but in the U.K they have made it so difficult, many people. myself included, have just given up and risk Visa exempt entry. The problem is two fold. Firstly, postal applications have now been stopped, necessitating travelling to the Embassy or Consulate, then returning another day to collect the passport and visa. Secondly, if you are travelling in and out of Thailand, only a single entry visa is now obtainable. The METV in the U.K. is onerous to obtain, to say the least. All the recent changes seem to be for the worst!

Lots of sensible advice! I also would recommend a trial period of several months and then decide for sure, but with your wife!
