so the black letters are chinese too?!?
hmm...

in my opinion there´s one big difference these days:
there are still backpackers and there are party tourists coming in for three weeks doing (for example) full moon and vang vieng.
my first time in thailand (15 years ago), i saw many travellers being alone and interested in a conversation/meeting new people. today i see many groups of 4 or 5 people staying in their cliques and getting wasted almost everynight. i call them the "dancing monkeys".
what i would like to see with the backpackers is: less use of the lonely planet and more use of common sense!
some seem to clinch to their lonley planet far too much.
last thing: i met the most interesting people in my life on the road!

i found this sign in a restaurant on ko lipe.
i think this might be mandarin and maybe malaysian letters on the left side?
any help is appreciated. thx in advance!

im looking for a website introducing buddhism.
i found this one so far http://www.knowingbuddha.org/ but i don´t really like it.
a lot of the customs and rituals are not mentioned.
im pretty sure there is someone here, who knows a good website introducing buddhism!?
thx in advance!
...please don´t post/recommend wikipedia.
and im not looking for a book recommendation either.

this thread is not about soap operas!
when i walk around in shopping malls and markets, many times i see these soap shops. and im not talking about the soap carvings as a souvenir,
these shops usually have many colours and interesting variations of soap.
is this just another sign of a culture, who likes to be well groomed and where outer appereance (f.e. smelling good) is very important or is there more to it? any cultural background or history?
maybe someone here knows an article to post?!
thx in advance

so it´s a gelatine cake!? thx for the info.
i saw a stall in bkk offering fried bananas in the colours blue, green, red and orange.
...incredible!
haven´t tried it though.
-
so i was on this little thai market strolling around.
i saw these three "cakes", but im not 100% sure about it
is it a blue, green and red cake they offer on the picture attached? what´s that about?
and in another stall, i saw these small thai-pizzas, but i had the strong impression, that they didn´t put cheese on it, but more likely mayonnaise?! can anyone confirm this? mayonnaise on pizza?
i also found one of these sushi-stalls, where one piece of sushi costs 5 baht. i love it!
-
thx dave,
yes pic one shows the same type of figures.
unfortunately i will not be in chieng mai soon.
there must be a place in bkk, where these are available.
maybe siam square or smth around pratunam?
i keep on looking...

as i walked around asiathique a few days ago, i discovered two shops selling paper, which can be folded to several figures.
in the pic attached, the paper-figures are puppies (not really my favourite), but there where also manga-style characters, robots, transformers and other very impressive stuff.
at asiathique, these items were quiet expensive. does anyone know more places/shops, where they sell these figures? and some prices?
i couldn´t find anything at jj-market. but there must be more shops selling these figures.
or has anyone background informations about this artform? maybe it´s not a new thing and already around for years.
by the way: yes, ive heard of origami, but this seems like a different thing to me. the paper seems more "prepared".
thx in advance for any help!

ok, i tell you the story behind this pic:
at that time i was just taking the pic, because i liked the structure/pattern of the packages lined up.
now i´m using it for my book, so i should know what´s on it.
i thought it would be sweets of any kind, good idea to post the pic here...
thx for the help.

Thx for clarifying this one. Never thought of that!
better not chew on it...

You could have walked up and taken a look at those packets they have pictures and you can figure out what they are if the wordings aren't in english.
Really?!
You could have been quiet instead of teaching me lessons i already know.

sometimes i see a thai wearing a String around the wrist.
is this related to buddhism? given by a monk?
or is there another story behind this?
thx in advance.

So i was at a party and someone said "they (thai women) all want to merry a foreigner, because we are rich!"
Instead of getting upset being so shallow, i stayed calm and let it/him go for the moment.
but then again i tried to analyse this for myself. here´s my theory so far:
For some women in Thailand, a marriage with a western man can be a chance to escape poverty.
If the man will provide for her family in Thailand, it will even raise her social status.
But many women have absolutely no interest in marrying a foreigner. They really love their country and their family and probaply have a good job as well. The idea of living in a foreign country 10.000 km away from their own culture (and food) is not an attractive option for many Thais.
is this theory far away from the truth? or "good enough"
thoughts?

I use a visacard from a bank in Germany whose policies clearly state that they will pay back all fees from foreign ATM's. I have never had a problem, they always pay back all those fees. 150 nor 180, I don't need to care.
DKB?

thx so far.
so the "grey is illness"-argument can go to sleep.
now i wonder, if they choose the colour of the bank similar to the colour the day they were born...
-
"its not exactly a colour that excites or sparks interest"
true, but it´s a colour, that represents serious business. and that´s very important for a bank that keeps your money.
but why not in thailand?
-
so you see many banks in thailand being yellow, pink, green or blue...basically very colourful compared to grey banks in western societies.
i heard, that banks are NOT grey in thailand, because the colour grey represents illness.
but somebody else told me, that it´s not true. she said, that the colours are just there to get more attention.
can anyone help to figure out the truth?
-
hi there,
i read that complex books from a forgeign language are being translated into thai in a more reduced and simplier thai-version!?
is that true? can anyone confirm that?
thx in advance
