  1. Wal,

I think you've left it a bit late as the visa may take more than 2 months to process (that's if they approve it anyway). My advice is to get your gf to ask one of her senior lecturers at the uni to write an official letter stating that she needs to go to oz for 3 weeks to further her research/collect data/attend seminar/conference or whatever lie you can think of that will get the bureaucrones to approve the visa. Note that it's the oz embassy, not the thai one, so the little pink envelope won't help.

  2. At first I thought this was such a ridiculous saga that unfolded - two expat 'organisations' (note my use of a neutral word). But then I thought - hang on, healthy competition. Could only be good for everyone. Only problem now is to decide which one to join!

How about changing one of the names to SFA (Siam Farang Association).

    :o

  3. Sorry about your wife, MaiChai. My dad also has an addiction to chilli but I think his stomach has developed a thick lining that prevents any ulcers developing! His favourite party trick is to eat a whole chilli without shedding a tear.

My local drinks outlet sells soy milk for 3 baht a glass. They pre-mix it with sugar added. If you don't want sugar put in it costs an extra 2 baht!  TIT.

  4. she hardly speaks nglish
Would like to wait until she speaks nglish and I speak Thai better.

So, how do you communicate with each other? Could be the reason she's pregnant. ???

We need more info (eg. ages) before we can advise. There's many threads here about dowries too.

Also, what do you mean by "get away with..."???

  5. Hey Jorn,

It's a cute little love song.

Goes something like this (excuse poor translation)...

Two Bodies – One Heart - by Suthipong Sombatjindar.

I am like a little boat that floats by, propelled by the waves and the wind until I don’t know the direction I’m going.

I’m like a bird that flies amidst the light rain, with no sanctuary to let my body rest.

And then when I met you I get the strength to send my boat floating to the good destination. The bird that was lost and exhausted will come to stay just a minute in your heart.

    Chrous

*The one love that I had is now gone. This (new?) heart I give to you. It's done. There is only one path. From today on, both our bodies will use just one heart.

What's more, the devotion that I have, I will use every minute to love you. (We will walk side by side forever).

I never thought that my life would have a day, to be someone important, someone's sweetheart.

How much meaning does true love really have? I know and understand when I love you.(*)

You are the beautiful dream in my life that I found.

Instead of answering, promise that this love will have only you.(*) I will love you, will love you with all my heart.

Two people, two bodies, one heart.

  6. I got your joke Thetyim. Not all of us have a dry sense of humour. Should probably have added a smiley or something!

    ::o:

It's interesting the flashing lights - overtaking thing. I have witnessed this custom quite often in Thailand and wondered if I would ever have the guts to try it myself. Well, one day I was stuck behind one of those 20 tonne buffalo movers one a one-lane highway...so I thought I'd give it a go. Well, to my surprise it really works! Cars coming the other way actually get out of YOUR way! It was such a good feeling of power.

*** Kids, do not try this at home ***

  7. Mr. N tool,

Just to pick you up on your logic (no offense intended either), but "If you can write, then you will be able to read" does not imply that to be able to read you must first know how to write. Get my drift? I think cita was just saying that learning to write is a good way to learn how to read.

    Right?  :o

  8. ...reminds me of an episode of Everybody loves Raymond.

You should build your house just far enough away from the in-laws so that they are not too far from their own home and therefore when they visit you won't have to stay the night. But build your house just far enough away so that they don't come over too often. I think they called it the "in-laws buffer zone" distance.

    :o

If your husband really loves you then he won't build YOUR house where you don't want it.

    โชคดี

  9. Alla,

Why do you want to learn Thai? If you're serious about it, i.e. you will come to live here for a while, then go for it...but it's not a straightforward language. Try this for starters...(maybe a bit tricky without the sound!)

Try saying ngor ngoo. (The snake) - ง

Try saying dtor dtow (The turtle) - ต

Try saying bplor bplar (The fish) - ป

These are all very common letters in the thai alphabet. www.learningthai.com is a good site for listening to thai.

If you cannot master these sounds then maybe try learning spanish! I'm not even going to go into the tones either. If you're a natural then go for it. It's a beautiful language if you can master it. Choek dee na krup.

ps. bad luck about your cane toads!!!   ha ha ha

    go you cockroaches..................................................................

  10. we would like to get married next year.
Steady on fellas. Nikki, seems to me that your bf just needs a good slap around the head, a wake up call. If you really both intend to get married (I assume the feeling is mutual) then why wait until next year? So he's had a few girlfriends in the past. Who hasn't? It's not a crime. Nikki, I wouldn't be drinking all his wine just yet. Give it more time. Talk to him. What was his reaction when he found you snooping around (besides being pissed off)? Did he feel/look guilty? Did he try a bit harder to make you feel more loved? Does he do little things that make you feel happy? Think about all these things and then make a rational decision.
    Forget this unfaithful joker.

Unfaithful? If you have proof then by all means leave him (and take the wine). Otherwise, you'll be sorry and might regret it for the rest of your life.

  11. QUOTE]i think we are biologically tuned to eat meat, maybe not lots of it but definitely to have it from time to time.  it is our spiritual (rational mind) that tells us its morally wrong and overides our natural and more primal instinct to just go for it.

I think we all eat meat now because our parents fed it to us when we were young and we got used to it. There is no primal instinct in humans to eat meat. :o

  12. After you finally get your new car it takes about another month for the paperwork to be done. The delay comes from the dealer in providing all the correct details and documents to register the car. Apparently in Phuket it can be done in one day. See:

    http://phuketgazette.com/issuesanswers/details.asp?id=391

By "usually" do you mean that not all red plates imply the car is new? I wouldn't be surprised if someone put red plates on an old car to boost the sale price!

  13. OK, I'll bite. I've had no problems with QANTAS ever and I've flown with them more than 20 times over 20 years.

The poll was "Best airline". Bit non-specific but I guess would include variables like cost, quality of service and food, safety record...

From what I can recall QANTAS has or had the best safety record of all airlines. It has had only two significant incidents (no deaths or injuries to passengers) since 1960 and both were in Bangkok!

Qantas 747 has Landing Gear Incident in Rome

23 April 2000: A Qantas airlines 747-300, with 303 passengers on board, had a landing gear strut collapse while taxiing for takeoff from Rome. One of the engines was damaged, but there were no injuries among the passengers and crew. This is the second serious incident involving Qantas in less than a year. Last September, a landing overrun involving a Qantas 747 at Bangkok's airport resulted in about $100 million in damage to the aircraft. A Qantas 747 was also involved in a minor landing incident in Perth the same month.

Qantas 747 with over 400 Aboard Runs off Runway

23 September 1999: A Qantas airlines 747-400, with 407 passengers and crew on board, came to rest on a golf course after sliding off a runway at Bangkok's airport. While there was substantial damage to the aircraft, no one on board the aircraft was seriously injured. The aircraft has since been repaired and put back into service.

No I don't work for QANTAS. I voted for QANTAS (mainly coz I felt sorry that they were sitting on a duck) but my second choice would have been Thai. ;-)
