imo Thailand and the banks can keep the happy face for a while

they had a massive reserve of foreign currencies (Due to the previous golden years of tourism and the massive export sector)

now even if this tourism flow is drying, the foreign money is still flowing here by transfers (Expats with a pension, sponsors stranded abroad with Thai gf\wife \family,  ''investissors'' from China and India and so on, all these people send money from their country to Thailand on a regular basis and the numbers, put together, are huge)

The amount of money flowing in from Expats and foreign remittances is microscopic relative to domestic household debt.

NPL's on mortgages must logically be soaring.

If you don't want a revolt, you need to give some hope to the people

also if the duration of the closure anounced is more than 1 month, they will all

start to ask some form of financial compensations from the governement

hence the 14 days trick. wich can be reapeated several times

    Yep. Agreed.

The question is, how long can Thailand's banks continue to pretend that NPL's aren't rising? Anyone with half a brain knows that data is cooked.

Banks can put on a happy-face for a little while, but eventually everyone notices they're bleeding out.

Keep an eye on that.... I got an impression all Chonburi hotel pools will close if not already.

I just swam in the pool at LK Empress a couple hours ago. It's definitely open.

The pool at Unixx South Pattaya is definitely closed.

  4. Quote

In Thailand the sex industry continues to grow and grow and these days there are beer promotion women, pretties, "Ent" girls, Pheuan Kin Khao (friends to eat with) and "girlfriends for rent" swellling the prostitute ranks.

Promotion women and pretties too? That's quite a broad definition of the "sex trade".

By that definition, half the young women in Western cities are in the sex trade too.  Ever been to a PR agency? I mean.. those girls aren't getting hired for their brains.

Thai 60-day tourist visas from embassies now require "bank statements with sufficient funds to cover your trip to Thailand"

This is rather nebulous. Do I have enough already?  Or do I need to transfer some cash in. How would one know?

Can someone tell me exactly how much $$$$ I need to keep in my checking account to satisfy this requirement?

    Thanks

    No

But to apply for the visa at many embassies requires you to be citizen or legal resident of the country to apply for it.

Right, and that raises the issue that you must be in a country that actually has a Thai embassy... And while that most seem like most countries, it's a minority of the world's countries. (There are just 65 Embassies of Thailand)

I'm chilling in a lovely country right now with no Thai Embassy. And since the neighboring country --- which does have an embassy -- is locked down ... well ... there effectively is a "list" of countries that can get to Thailand.

It's not a tiny fraction, it's absolutely giant part of thailands gdp, and that's just the direct part.

There's no reason for the BAHT to go down during high season, it's more like the opposite, more people are buying baht so it works as an upside instrument.

Like I said, "despite the beliefs of many farangs"

1/5th is a tiny fraction my friend. (Not to mention that by other measures it's significantly less than that). Most farangs think Thailand has a tourist economy. It doesn't. It's an export economy.

Your future projections relevant to the discussion even if you like the numbers better.
