I found "Thailand Fever" helpful in not only understanding Farang-Thai relationships but to some extent the culture in general. For understanding the cross-cultural dynamic overall all I'd also recommend "Wondering into Thai Culture" but Mont Redmond. If anyone has other good reads in this area I'd appreciate the recommendations.

Support of children in college abroad is a common reason for approving wire transfers abroad.

You should find out the name of an officer in the wire tranfer office of your bank (he would be at the home office, of course, not in some local branch) and make an appointment to see him. Go in with a list of the transfers you propose to make and ask him how best to obtain permission and whether you willl have to do it separately for each transfer. Your answer, depending on who you end up talking to and his mood that day, will range somewhere between 'no can' and 'no problem.' If it's not the answer you need, however, look for another bank. You shouldn't have a problem finding one who will sort the matter out for you.

I have accepted a job working in Thailand for a subsidiary of a foreign-based company and will be managing a team of around ten Thais. I have been to Thailand on several occasions for work and pleasure which included a couple visits where I taught English in a volunteer capacity. Around this I’ve got a small circle of Thai friends which has been both very enjoyable and instructive. So I know a little but not a lot. Now to the questions…

I’d like to be able to connect with a few working expats in similar situations who might be interested in getting together from time to time to talk about work and the experience of managing people and doing business in Thailand. What would be a good way to do this? Organizations? This forum? Other forums?

Are there good resources; books, lectures, classes, etc. that cover doing business in Thailand? I’ve read “Culture Shock Thailand”, am in the process of reading “Wondering into Thailand” as well as some contemporary Thai fiction, but overall I can’t seem to find much. Any recommendations?

Lastly what tips to the members here have for me? What to expect? Pitfalls? Do’s and Don’ts.

Until I read this thread I thought this would be easy, now I know. What is the process to get permission to do this? How long does it take? Can I get an ongoing permission or do I have to do something every month?
