  1. Isn't CELTA a course in TEFL, only for teaching EFL to adults only, anywhere in the world?  You need to be more specific when you say you're 'not interested in TEFL..." because that includes CELTA, does it not?

Will you then take ECC's extra course that covers children and adolescents, for an extra week and many more baht?

Do you already have at least a BA and plan to teach for many years in countries outside of Thailand?  Then the CELTA may be worth the extra money.  Otherwise, no.  IMNSHO.

I was under the imprssion that TEFL is a different body, that also issues a certificate that is similar to CELTA.

I used to work for AUA and know many people who felt that the CELTA gave them a firm foundation for teaching - BA or not.

Surely getting practical knowledge puts you in better stead than just showing up in a classroom, having got a job purely on having a BA in an unrelated field and having the ability to speak english.

  2. I lost about 6 stone since I moved back to Scotland from Thailand 2 years ago. I just can't get used to the stodgy, processed that people live on here.

I've been interested in some of the diet tips here - fruit is fattening? Show me one person that gets heart disease eating fruit.

Also, I think that you can't really rely on beer as a source of carbohydrates - I'm no dietician but you'll take a long time to convince me that it's a better source of complex carbs than brown rice, or wholemeal flour

This is more of an observations about farang in Thailand - why do many farang speak that weird form of english to Thais, eg. Where you come from? - and then wonder why Thais can't speak english properly.

  4. I'm planning on doing a CELTA course in Bangers at the end of the year - I'm thinking of doing it with Elite, does anyone know anything about this school?

Or is there anywhere better to do it - I'm not really interested in TEFL or TESOL

  5. Does anyone know of any good websites that sell furniture in Thailand. I know that it's widely available in Thailand, but I'm in the UK just now and wouldn't mind knowing some prices of stuff, ie. what you get for your money.

  6. Have you tried vegetable wholesalers? They'll sell them in bulk -but if you know a couple of others that want them too then you're sorted. You want to ask for snake beans.

  7. It's interesting when people see Thai markets and can't imagine how people could eat some of the meat. Where they think the hotels buy their meat from is beyond me.

FYI, the latest news from the environmental health in the UK is that it's ok to use wooden chopping boards again - it seems that bacteria can't survive in drying wood.

Funny how things go the full circle - I guess people got by ok before food regs.

  8. Does anyone know if the psycho one-armed guy still live in Changers?  He jumped out at me when I was on my bike one night.  I found out the next day was that he is a full-time resident and has a wee bit of a drinking problem.

I've noticed a few posts saying that they found some of the ex-pat community in Chiang Mai pretty strange, but in 3 years I never experienced much of that - except the experience above.

are you talking about a farang guy? If so, yeah I know him. Got a bit of a mental problem but only when drinking. He's got a wife and kid there also. He tried to kill himself years back in Germany by throwing himself in front of a train. Obviously didn't work, so yeah, he's got some issues. Best not to get into a discussion with him while he's on the piss as he can get quite violent and really doesn't care what happens to you or him. On the other hand, you could kick his a5s but you would look pretty stupid beating on a one armed bandit. There's a lot of people like that in Chiang Mai and for some reason, I just so happen to know most of them. He1l, I may one of them! Cheers :D

Yeah, he was a farang - I'm moving back at the end of the year - so he'd better watch out! :o

  10. About 3 years ago I quit a job in Chiang Mai, and I never handed in my work permit - I never over-stayed or anything like that - and I haven't worked in Thailand since - I've been living in Scotland.

Does anyone know if I'll have a problem getting a work permit? This did happen with a previous job - and all you had to do was report the work permit missing and pay 1000 baht.

Does anyone know if this is still the procedure?

    Cheers
