  1. Ppl get themselves into trouble as this can be misconstrued as working illegally, even though it's really not working by definition.

The answer I've always provided is that I'm not working but rather living off of savings if asked how I'm supporting myself. If supporting docs are required then this can be supplied. Ppl need to think and be prepared.

  2. What you heard is not correct, the not paying them for real and only social security makes them ghost employees. That is not legal either, often advisers tell you this will be ok but it is not. If you want to be full legal you will still not be full legal.

OK, thanks. So if I were to create a paper trail showing I'm paying minimum wage + social security for 4 Thai employees, but they return the money to me in cash, is this legal?

This would appear to be shady, yet legal in my opinion.

I cannot believe I'm reading this. "this would appear shady, yet legal in my opinion". At first I thought you were serious about establishing something, but it sounds like another scheme so one can stay here longer, and a bad one at that too.

If truly serious, contact a lawyer and not a forum.

  3. and if you are managing your investments, trading etc from an overseas broker and overseas account..would be considered working in Thailand?

Funny enough I saw your post as I used this as my example.

Not a chance in hell would this be scrutinized, since you're paying the taxes on it back home this would be deemed as personal banking and it could never be proven if they even tried.

  4. I wouldn't receive regular payments from a company into a Thai bank account. Have it deposited into an account in home country or ???. Other than that, pretty much what h90 said.

Well in his home country he would pay income tax for it.....

True, but a regular payment from an offshore company might raise questions at a local Thai bank. Probably not, but maybe. Set up deposit offshore in any country with best benefits.

It would't be smart to get paid directly into a Thai bank acct. Get it deposited to your acct back home and transfer it to Thailand. And if anyone says anything, this is from your savings. No different than when I used to day trade abroad and transfer it in.

  5. Do you have family or friends "back home" that can bail you out short time to at least get you "legal" again here and able to look for work ? or assist you in returning to your home country where you can obtain work perhaps more easily and sort yourself out.

No, I don't have any family left (although I'm only 38) and, since I came to Thailand 8 years ago, no friends left back home either.

Man, I hear you on the no family at a young age, I'm 45.

Though I'm not in your position, I remember there was a post and replies about a certain temple that if approaching them in the right manner would allow you to temporarily stay at. It was based around someone that was homeless. I believe in the right circumstance maybe this can be something to look into until you figure things out. Can someone post a link or pm Nicolas, as I definitely know this was discussed here.

Hope you get things sorted out.

Don't mind the ppl that may want to flame you.

    Good luck.

  6. Working holiday visa. Stay up to a year of you want. Can work if you feel like it as well..

    "Working holiday visa."

What is a working holiday visa?

It's a program whereas based on where you're from you can get employment in specific countries as part of a working visa, there's a list of countries that participate in this. There are many from Ireland, France and Spain that work where I'm at. Before anyone gets any ideas lol, there's an age cutoff and I'd bet a large sum that thailand does not participate in this.

  7. Are you thinking of using an expired passport as collateral?

If so, not wise. I can see that back firing on you, even getting you in trouble with the office that is responsible for issuing these from your home country. Just think about it, it can be misconstrued as knowingly using expired gov't issued property and passing it off as valid.

It sounds as if I'm splitting hairs but I would not do it.

  8. Another sensationalized story. "could be on it's way to becoming..." How? Are they changing their laws so it'll attract more sex tourists or are they opening entertainment districts?

But seriously, the author is just pointing out that they have somewhat of a scene, which you can also say for many countries in Asia.

Been there, yes, they have massage parlours and I'm sure there are girls that hang out at the clubs and hot spots plying their trade.

Enjoyed my time there, nice sites, modern infrastructure and ppl are friendly, but it's not a place or will even be considered as a "hot spot" for sex in its current setting.

  9. Maybe they should inform the appropriate ministry/offices of Vietnam of the reasons. Lots of wasted time and money for the affected ppl.

Not doing this for Thai, Phils or Cambodians?

I guess when you're the big boy on the block, you're allowed to call an audible at the line of scrimmage.

Imagine this happening in North America to any specific group/nationality? Cities would be set ablaze..

  10. Left for 2 yrs, everyone except family was happy for me. Came back, as I decided to be snow bird instead between Asia/Canada. Family tried to stiff me of an inheritance - saying I was not around. Got the money, but the relationship is over. Friends are happy for me, and even stayed with one for 2 months for free, as he was lonely since his divorce, nice time, but felt I was imposing so next time will just rent a short timer until returning. Sad I don't have family other than 2 cousins that give a sh1t at 45, but life is better without the drama. Friends are top notch though.
