Hi,
I would appreciate it if you could confirm that you have English on Animal Planet and sound on STC.
I have children who enjoyed those programs before the latest changes.
Regards
Just checked. Interesting in that I get Thai on Animal Planet but can switch to English using the third button down on the R. side of the remote. And no sound on STC, but again I can get sound (English) using the button.
BUT, both of these channels default back (AP - Thai language) and (STC - No sound) when the channels are changed.
-redwood
Redwood ,
Tried that , it worked exactly as you said - but disappears after channel change (at least I have those back)
STC is now a different model as is BBC Prime now BBC entertaiment.
The movies appear to older than ever.
Many Thanks - I had given up trying to contact UBCTV/ Truevision.

If you have DStv look at:----Then last night whilst trying to watch the ESPN and Start Sports channels the picture kept disappearing as if it was heaving down with rain. This may be a coincidence but I found that the lower down the channel numbers I went, the quality of sound and picture improved

Same sh*t with these idiots. Worst run company in Thailand, and that takes some work. I'm having the same problems as everyone else...I have ESPN, StarSports, CNN, BBC, but no HBO, Discovery, etc. - I get the E48 message, which then switches over to E52.
I just sent them an email telling them I wasn't paying for the service for each day its out. Perhaps if everyone were to do that...nah, for a minute i forgot who i was dealing with..
Hi, Could not agree more !!! Tried to send emails to UBC and the new company True Vision.
FAILED !!

Phuket police seize over 5,000 fake credit cards
PHUKET: -- Police have arrested three Sri Lankan men for credit-card fraud, seizing more than 5,000 bogus credit cards allegedly encoded with information from real credit cards.
...
A search of the vehicle uncovered a notebook computer, 2,703 fake white credit cards and three flash drives. After the arresting officers turned down a Bt2-million bribe in exchange for their release, the men were questioned, Boonlert said.
The real news here is that the arresting officers turned down a 2 million Baht bribe! Perhaps there is hope for Thailand after all. I hope those officers get a big time promotion and reward.
Congratulations, for doing a good job ! Surely not promotion or reward ? This is what they are paid to do.

Hey guys. How much do these guys charge for calls. I use skype for pc-pc calls and pc to pstn calls and have been very happy with it. Skype is good because there is usually just one jump from IP to PSTN (if you call a landline) this service jumps to PSTN on both sides and this should drive up the cost. good idea if you are bandwidth challenged.

So many of those cheap call companies are popping up. What caught my eye with this one is they apparently can decide to bill you for a call if they like, so they probably require a credit card or something for the privilege of signing up.
It looks like a scam to me, just like Gizmo, VOIPbuster and so many others like it. Ok, so scam is a big word, but they basically promise much more than they deliver. In the case of VOIPbuster they were offering a free phone number for anyone registered - so I sent them 10 bucks to register (which were supposed to be usable to make calls) but as soon (but not before) as they had the money I got a message that they didn't at this time have any numbers in Thailand. Duh, so what, I wanted a number in Europe, but hello, that's not an option. No refunds, not possible to get hold of anyone, no phone numbers to call, mails remained unanswered. In the end I though I'd just use the 10 bucks paid to make calls but their call quality was so bad that I gave up. 10 bucks paid for nothing.
As for Gizmo, they offer you "free calls between friends and family" as long as both parties are registered members. Ok, so I signed up my wife and me - but that wasn't acceptable - you have to have separate addresses - since when is that part of being family. Oh well, at least it was free, except for a huge download. Their client, btw, is the biggest resource hog of all, eating almost 100 MB, minimized or not. Skype by comparison uses only 7MB in minimized state. Needless to say that got uninstalled as well.
I'm staying with Skype for now. If I change it will be to Yahoo, not some no-name also-ran with dubious ownership and business model.
----------------------------------------------------
Hello ChingChing and Phil.
Skype not really comparable with Jajah . the essential difference is that with Skype you need to use a special mike/telephone connected to your computer, which in turn depending on your on your "cyberspeed" limits the audio quality of the call - on quality broadband no probs but for many of us in the sticks, Skype does not provide effective communication. I have no comment on either Gizmo or VOIPbuster - having no idea how they function.
My question was really directed at users of Jajah . For me I am more than satisfied with the service so far , especially for the ability have inexpensive calls to far off places.
-
I have been using Jajah's web activated call service for the last couple of weeks - making almost free calls to the US, Canada and UK.
All that is needed this end is a computer connected to the internet. An ordinary telephone connected to a landline, or a mobile phone. Using the process you will be able to talk to your party at the other end, on their landline or mobile phone (without them having a computer.) If they are also registered Jajah users you can have free calls !
Any one else using this service ???? Please give your impressions .

My new hotel is now open in Phuket. But I have a problem with the TV channels in the 10 bedrooms.
I get some 'free-to-air' non-Thai channels off one of the satellites, and distribute these via multiple satellite receivers, combiners, splitters etc. That all works fine.
For Thai tv, I was receiving these channels from the terrestial VHF/UHF transmitters in Phuket. That was also fine until now!
It seems there is a new VHF communications transmitter at Phuket Airport. The airport antennas are about 200 metres from my hotel. So I now get continual interference on my VHF reception.
Although I could 'liaise' with the airport to try to resolve this problem, I think the better solution is to receive the Thai channels (and maybe others) from UBC, especially since the signal quality is so much better than VHF reception.
But here is the problem. As far as I am aware, UBC does not offer any special subscription package for small hotels. That means that you would need to install one decoder box for each channel that you wanted to receive, and also pay one monthly subscription per channel! - Rather expensive.
OK, I'm aware that there are various pirate cards/decoders etc that could provide a working solution. But I am only seeking suggestions for a legal solution which would enable me to distribute Thai and other satellite channels to my hotel rooms.
FYI, I currently get free-to-air channels from AsiaSat 2 and 3. This is a mix of (generally) boring TV channels from arab states, Cuba, Italy etc. But no channels in English with sport, music, movies etc.
I can't use the Supersport channels - they are also all encrypted and a single-user subscription is 50,000 baht per year.
I can't even get ABC from Australia - there is no line of sight at the low elevation angle.
Also, although I have an internet connection, internet TV still seems too unreliable....
Suggestions are welcome!!

www.lloydstsb.com is my main banking portal but has been completely inaccessible from Thailand this week. This site is crucial to me. I just get the standard message 'The page cannot be displayed' you see when offline. Could the Thai authorities mistakenly be blocking access? My links are via IP Star satellite on Koh Phayam, Ranong province -- tried at 2 different locations. The service is only dial-up speed but pretty reliable otherwise to all sites.
I did access Lloyds from Bangkok at a wi-fi-equipped hotel last week. As a last resort I will try landline Internet in Ranong town when I go there next week.
Can anyone suggest an alternative route or portal to get to the Lloyd's Internet banking log-on page via IP Star?
Many thanks all.
Hi Trevor, I tried your URL to LLoyds via my IP star . I got the same message as you received.
What I did then was to Google LLoyds and their wesite URL, which I clicked on in Google = http://www.lloydstsb.com/ this action took me straight to what you needed.
I would add that for the last 5 days - usually afternoons I have had problems with IP Star /Cslox
(plus poor cstomer service to rub salt in the wounds!)

First there'e the line with the refresh, search, favourites etc
then there's the address line
then bearchare search
then google
then yahoo
how can I get rid of them?
Neeranam,
If you can't get rid of the problem - consider downloading and installing Firefox
-
The fact is this.
Now thailand can control who can come in for more than 90 days per 180 days through their embassies/ consulates. If you have a non imm visa or another long stay visa or extension your fine. If you have a tourist visa you will be fine as well, but first you have to get one, but the tourist visa is not gaurenteed, so if your tourist visa application is rejected, its bye bye for 90 days. So if you use your 90 days on visa exempt stamps up and you crawl into an embassy/ consulate and try to get a tourist visa, im pretty sure they will know what you are trying to do and they may re-fuse you. So yes, the days you spend here on a tourist visa do not count towards your 90 days, but unlike the free visa exempt stamp, the tourist visa application could be refused. So i would plan other ways to stay here, im sure come January, all the consulates will be filling up with tourist visa applicants with 90 days worth of visa exempt Days already used in their passport.....................what do you think they are gonna do. Most likely refuse your tourist visa and tell you to go elsewhere, remember, it is their right to re-fuse a visa.
Good luck to everyone. I cant wait to hear the sotries that will be comming around the end of the year. Then again, this is Thailand, they might scrap this new rule all together....................
Maybe, someone can answer the question :- Do you stay OUT of Thailand for 90 days or 180 days before you can return.
-
The date 1st Oct important because the rule enforcement came into effect on that date.
So, is it 90 out or 180 days out ??? Sunbelt , you guys appear to be the fundis ?
It is 90 days out of 180 days of tourist visa exemption days. If you have a visa obtained at a Embassy/Consulate these days do not count towards your quota of 90 tourist visa exemption days.
www.sunbeltasiagroup.com
Thank you Sunbelt,
So do you have to stay out of Thailand for 90 days or stay out of Thailand for 180 days ? before you can return ?
-
This seems to go contrary to the infomation that the 90 day restriction applied only to those who entered Thailand with no visa and got a 30 visa exemption stamp.
Anybody else heard of this or could it just be a misunderstanding?
It's not a misunderstanding. It's basically the rule : visas exemption AND regulars tourist visas are for tourism purpose. In this case : 90 days in Thailand max, 90 days out.
Many people continue to believe in santa claus, but the more we get information from the ground, the more it appears that the party is over.
Peruse the forum here about the differents thais embassy, and the whole picture will start to emerge.
I don't understand how Sunbelt can say the contrary : if the rule is fully applied, it won't be possible anymore to live full time in Thailand on "tourism visas" (exemption or 60 days). That's the spirit of the rule.
Okay I agree, we need to be sure on the ground. But once again, the spirit of the rule is very clear.
Anyone answer the following scenario ? :- Tourist visa granted Penang before 1st Oct > entered Thailand before 1st Oct , told to renew within thailand for one month additional after 1st 2 months had elapsed. After completing 3rd then would have to leave Thailand and could then return on 30 day visa runs for a total of 90 days >>>>> Then would have to be out of Thailand for 90 days before returning.
However Second Immigration Official said in this case that after the 3 x 30 day runs had been completed , the tourist would have to stay out of Thailand 6 months before returning .
The date 1st Oct important because the rule enforcement came into effect on that date.
So, is it 90 out or 180 days out ??? Sunbelt , you guys appear to be the fundis ?

Novotel can be walked to easy. Go to ground floor level 1 cross the road and go down walkway at side of Car Parks cross the frontage road there and the hotel is less than 100 mtrs away from terminal behind Car Parks.
AOT control all Limos from the airport on Arrivals 700baht for SUV or 900 Car type into Bkk is the price. Cars waiting at roadside Arrivals AOT LIMO area. Taxis Level 1 ground floor.
Taxis at Departures will always be a mess dropping off and then hanging around to see if they can get a pick up off meter without having to go to the Transport Centre and register before queueing there and coming back when called for arrival passengers. A tip is to know your departure door for your airline and get Taxi to go there most are at far end of road but Thai Air and Domestic is doors 1-4.
Door B & C International exits are a problem I will look into that on Monday when I arrive back from Hong Kong.
NOT east with a cart full of luggage, near impossible as there are no ramps and it is full of pot holes
Also as most of the way is not coverred, good luck in the mid-day sun or in the rain even without luggage.
The shuttle picks you up at the arrival floor level door 4 and is very regular and quick (although I prefer to be able to walk like we did at DM to the Amari)
Has anyone used the underground 300 metre walkway to the Novotel ??? Details PLEASE

This is very interesting report, and does not surprise me, given my own recent experience at the airport. What is somewhat strange is that there are all these interesting and comprehensive reports on the website, but very little of comparison in the local English language press, which might have a wider readership. Also, I do not know what is being said about the airport in the Thai media. Can anyone comment? I imagine it would only be in the latter that it might come to attention of those who might be able to do something about it, or is that being too naive?
Sam Tam,
At the moment the previous Taksin government is being hammered in the Thai Media for forcing the opening of Suvarnaphoom before it was completed. Also for the location of the airport on wet marsh land which is no longer there and able to suck up excess rainfall - resulting in flooding in areas elsewhere.
The Nation Newspaper carries a link to the Thai Visa blogs on Survarnaphoom Shambles - you will find it on the home page in the left hand column.

1. Does the new airport have an up-to-date new website; (I cannot find one on google)?
2. Are there any pay-in lounges at Suvarnabhumi, like the old Louis lounge at Dong-Muang?
Thanks.

Here a reasonably clear description of the procedures and directions for international and domestic passengers arriving and departing from SVP - BKK. However, the description carefully avoids the subject of distance, time and signage - which unfortunately is where the designers of this airport failed to consider the needs of the passenger.
