  1. I bought four ceiling lights/fans from Homeworks, four weeks later one packed in, went to the store and they sent the guy from the shop floor round, he fixed it then asked for payment for his motorbike and time, my partner insisted we pay him (it was only 400 baht). about three weeks later the same fan packed in again so I went to homeworks and complained, they sent the same guy around again who repaired it and again asked for money as I was alone I refused citing the guarentee he asked to speak to my partner on the phone which I obliged and explained that under guarentee there should be no charge. The excuse I was given was that he would have to remove the whole unit and take it back to the store for repair and it would take around six weeks, fine I said do that! He left having repaired the light/fan without payment and its worked fine ever since! Since then I have not purchased any major articles from that store.

  2. Head up Pattaya Klang and just past Foodland on the opposite side is a small driving school, my partner booked there after some lessons from me and learnt the highway code etc, took their exam after ten lessons and passed first time including the two hour written exam . Their only complaint was they were taught in a manual drive and found it hard work after our automatic! And before anyone has a go my partner is now a good driver with more patience than me!

  3. assume that a valid Driver's License will suffice. Or does this mean we'll need a note from our mother?

As a driving licence can be valid for five years I doubt it could be used as proof of address unless of course the rule of law is you have to notify change of address and change your driving licence?

  4. I had my passport photo done in a kodak shop on Pattaya Klang, i just took her the details from the embassy website and she made the photo accordingly no problem.

I also went to Bangkok and renewed it rather than trust the postal system !

  5. My small girl had 7 pups in her first litter and managed them all fine, when she was born her mother rejected her and I bottle fed her from 10 days however they cannot take fresh milk and I had to get some baby milk powder and make it up. Also when her pups were around 3/4 weeks old they started to eat mums dinner so I knew it was time to put them on solids.

  6. My experience for car only was that I required an International Driving Permit. I got mine from AA, but RAC also do them. Easy to get, go on line print off form, fill in, enclose cheque etc, post get back about 10 days later.I had to copy every page and sign each page of International Driving Permit in front of lady at desk. They were not interested in my Driving License from UK! I only had to do colour test, depth test and emergency stop test. I didn't have to go and drive a car or do computer test.

ditto, same for me, idp, no test 105 baht and one year licence, last year went back one year and one day later and got the five year licence no problem. Also did the same for a friend recently, same procedure, painless.

  7. Just fit a "T" piece, if fact even easier get the local plumber to do it! My partner hit the water pipe in the main bathroom whilst cleaning and the pipe sheared at the point it enters the bathroom from an underground pipe. Decided I didnt want to tackle that as it meant removing the cistern from the wall and digging the pipe out so called in the local plumber. He dug out the wall to get at the pipe, fitted new juntion (one for cistern one for bum gun) plastered and retiled, it took around four hours and the bill was 195 baht for parts (with receipt) and 500 baht for labour! Actually I think the labour was less but my partner insisted on giving him 500 baht as he did the job as soon as we called him. It was well worth it, I lay on my lounger with a can and a good book whilst he did the work.

  8. If you do a gogle search on Pattaya Estate agents you will find hundreds of shop houses, also a number of people are selling up after two years of bad low season and not much brighter on the horizon so think carefully. You might pick up a bargain but whether the tourist will be there in the forseeable future is anyones guess.

  9. can you not transfer the pension?
    To What..??....

I think the poster is confusing the rules for private pensions with those of state pensions, the UK state pension is non transferable and can only be paid when reaching the legal retirement age (currently 65 for men and 60 for women) However, I believe there is some provision for people that emigrated to certain countries where their earned pension entitlement can be transfered to their new country so that they can qualify for that state pension when the time comes. This is a complicated subject and would need in depth research to confirm a) what countries participate :o what you gain/lose by transfering.

The other part of the equation is private pensions which unlike the state pension can be transfered to another provider ( at a cost) but here we are getting into personal circumstances and this is best dealt with by an independant financial advisor. Hope this helps/clarifies the situation.

  10. What are other documents?

I thought it would be obvious what "other" documents are. What documentary evidence do you have of an income? letter from your pension company? statement from your stockbroker? Annual Accounts from your accountant on your investment income? the list is endless and if you are really struggling go down to immigration in Jomtien any weekday between 9 - 10 am and the British Consul is available to answer questions & give advice. He normally sits in the coffee shop by the main entrance.

  11. Things have changed in the services pensions department, the people to contact are: http://www.veterans-uk.info/. If you served after a certain date then you have a preserved pension which is payable from age 60. You need to update them with your personal details re marrige. In the case of the UK state pension look at http://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/home.asp.

Hope this helps, if you struggle pm me and I well try and help, I am retired pensioner and get newsletter from vetrans -uk every year with my pension increase.

  12. It depends where you live! I bought a new yaris and after 3 months I got rid of it for a number of reasons, underpowered, low freeboard (in the wet season I couldnt go anywhere due to flooded roads) and that instrument panel in the centre of the dashboard drove me crazy! I also felt intimidated as the car was so small also the after sales service of the Toyota Dealer I bought it from was one of complete disintrest. I have now abandoned any idea of buying a Toyota from that dealership ever again. A friend wanted a written quote for a commuter bus and they wanted 5000 baht for the quote!! enough said .

  13. Brand new nokias being advertised locally for around 1600 baht! I think in tukcom but not sure, also cheapest option would be a 1 2 call simcard at 99baht, if your phone is locked it can be unlocked at any of the big phone markets for a couple of hundred baht.
