  1. Correct.
It was, and still is a 'O' visa based on receipt of State Pension for the purpose of visiting Thailand for up to 90 days.

The difference is that it is that it can no longer be used for multiple entries.

Please read carefully before making incorrect posts.

  2. just returned from da nang, hoi an, wei, and sai gon. in d a, did not see any grotty rest., plenty of convenience stores, atms, no motor cycles driving wrong way, just walk and they miss you. never saw one accident, but yes they park on sidewalks, as do thais.  wide streets clean, lots of roundabouts where traffic flows , not like thailand.  hotels cleaner, better fitted and serviced than thai ones in same price range.  in hoi an, of course lots of tourist, many of which were viet and chinese.  in short, i have to think your post is bs to the max.
I too visit Vietnam regularly and totally agree.

  3. ..should be de-husked by the time you get there.
"Again, the challenge is to convince Thai institutions that there are some valuable assets that could be tapped to improve the situation with little or no cost to the government.  "

Yes.. road safety in every country has been brought about by state investment and involvement.
All successful countries have implemented the 5 Es of road safety.
Education, Enforcement, Engineering, Emergency and Evaluation. You can't have one without the others.
However Thailand, as an industrialising country, needs to be aware that the current situation is costing the nation trillions of baht and can bring about similar changes to a country that a full scale war does.
Corruption, graft and nepotism have had a terrible effect....it has meant that misinformed, unqualified and incompetent people have ended up in high-ranking policy making jobs and the implementation of an effective road safety policy (which Thailand has available) and the construction of proper roads has been impaired by inappropriate diversion of allotted funds.
In fact one really good way of assessing how rife corruption is in a country is to look at the roads....The worse the design and shorter the lifespan before repairs is inversely proportional to the amount of corruption.

"Culture is used as a substitute for analysis and as a get out term by those with inherently racist views as a way of givng some cloaked resctability to what is basically a racist viewpoint."

OMG, how did you arrive at that conclusion? No basis in fact so I guess you thought this one up to support your own views! :post-4641-1156693976:

    And a definition of culture:
the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. "Afro-Caribbean culture" et al
    synonyms:
Civilization, society, way of life, lifestyle etc

Please do not try to hoodwink us with your "without definition or understanding".
I wonder what the producers of self-driving cars would have to change to enable their cars to work in Thailand?

  5. She's not coming for 2 weeks. Seems odd that she says she has been told she can't get one in time to travel. And she's says she can come without it, but can't tell anyone. Surely she is allowed to travel, if I arrange her insurance. Just that she wouldn't get a Thai Government payout if something unexpected did happen?

School holidays start tomorrow so maybe the head office staff are away. It is a good idea for her to arrange independent insurance anyway which in probability will give higher payouts.

  6. Thanks for your reply. She's a school teacher. Presumably that is covered by government employees?

Yes, My partner is a government teacher in a college and has to get permission for insurance purposes. Usually takes about a week as it is a head office function in Bangkok and requires several signatures and stamps. The document looks good though as a supporting document in the UK visa application process.

  7. Visited the Thai Consulate in Birmingham, UK this morning to discover, as from last week it is now CLOSED!

A lady at the reception of the office block gave me a letter explaining that the Thai Consulate as passed away and therefore the Consulate can no longer stay open!?

I checked the web site yesterday and I was unable to open the page (just thought there was a problem with the web page).

Dialled the number and a recorded message saying...number no longer in use!?

Googled for more information, but nothing on the Internet.

Please make people aware so they can make other arrangements for obtaining Visas!

    Can anyone clarify the situation?

Thank you for letting us know that we can no longer access Thai consular services from the Thai honorary consulate formerly located in Birmingham. Your message will save the people located in the Midlands unnecessary journeys.

I note that a Google search still records "Royal Thai Consulate in BIRMINGHAM, England Address: One Victoria Square,Birmingham Tel: 0121 643 9481" but as you stated the website no longer works.

The literate among us thank you for your good information.

  8. FWIW, sharing my recent experience.

I bought something from Ebay earlier this year, with the product shipped from Europe - it came via courier (FedEx or DHL - I forget).

Courier charged for Import Duties/Taxes and a small processing fee. They attached a receipt from Customs for the Import Duties/Taxes, so it was legit and not "overcharged".

The Courier's small processing fee (which was transparent and itemized) was reasonable - I'd rather Courier deal with Customs than me trying to do it myself with a special trip to Customs House or whatever.

    What next?

When you "declined the parcel, denying all knowledge of the contents", did you sign anything or make a verbal statement to that effect to FedEx? If so, FedEx will contact the Sender to try to reclaim the 800 Baht that FedEx paid. The Seller might be surprised, as he will now have proof that the product reached the Buyer, and the Seller might contact you later.

You could then try to negotiate with the Seller to share the Import duty, but he's probably stated that these costs are for the Buyer, so that's going to be tough.

If the product is unclaimed and the Seller does not want to incur additional cost to have it returned, it will probably be sold off to try to recoup the Duty and storage costs.

And you eBay and PayPal accounts may be withdrawn.
  9. I just renewed my Canadian passport in Bangkok. It takes approx 15 business days. The people at the Canadian Embassy are wonderful. I did not need to show my legal status in Thailand, and used the simplified form for Canadians outside of Canada. There is a photo shop on Sala daeng at the back of the building. Just go out the back and turn right. Its on the left-hand side next to a 7 eleven, before you reach Silom.

With your single passport renewal, the embassy people would have seen the entry stamp in your old passport and noted that you were legally in the country. However, the OP's passport as submitted will not have any Thai entry stamps so they may well ask to see how he came to be in the country. It would be unlikely that they would not check this but like New Zealand, they could be less stringent than others on verifying all aspects of ones presence in Thailand. Just suggesting that the OP ensures he has BOTH his passports with him when he submits the Canadian one for renewal, just in case they ask.

What would happen if he visited a country that does not stamp your passport, for example Hong Kong or Macau?

  10. Are you writing 'UK' on the address? Somebody once told me that UK is the code for the Ukraine. I'm not sure how true this is but that might be where your mail is going. I normally write United Kingdom in full on any mail I send.

Thats interesting, as my Posts Office didnt know what the "United Kingdom" was and asked for UK, but ideally Great Britain as thats what they use in their system.

If you look on the Thai Post website, in their list of countries its "Great Britain".

Shouldnt matter, the post code is the important bit of info.

The correct country is of primary importance, in this case "Great Britain" and the postcode is of secondary importance.

With regards to tracking with the British post office, I often have item shipped within G.B. to a English address using Royal Mail tracking and often find that the tracking is delayed or incomplete. The packages usually arrive in good time and condition though.

  11. Which street vendors are we talking about here?

that is a state secret , only need to know peep's can see da list ...........

I started at the halfway point and gave up when someone wanted to do nails in a telephone retailers premises.

The simple idea of people here stating that Thai food is good for them, is ridiculous, there are plenty of fat Thai's in this country.

Apparently some people prefer their foods cooked with questionable ingredients, and feel it taste better, but that is just a theory,

especially when you watch how much the Thai's depend on MSG for what they state is taste good ingredient, and that's exactly what is supposed to make you brain think; that is taste good. It also helps preserve food to some degree.

If there's any question about how great their food really is, just walk around a Thai Market,

where all the meats & poultry are strung out everywhere, and take in that great aroma...

now after about half an hour,

think to yourself, what you want to eat, now that you've built up a healthy appetite?

The locals state that eating food that isn't so preserved and clean only makes you stronger.

    Really?

Perhaps that's why when I look at Thai's the same age as me,

it's easy to see they look 10 years + more than I.

Our bodies will fight off what ever we throw at it,

but by doing so, we are taxing our bodies even more,

which results in us aging before your true time,

it that really worth that quick snack we grab on the sidewalk?

Now people will compare this to western food, as they like to put it,

but we are not talking about other foods, we are talking about or I am writing about the street foods,

sold in Thailand, which are sold on the side of the road, with all the great seasoning of the street dust,

and fumes off those beautiful buses that drive by every 5 minutes.

    What's not to love?

I don't see many people smiling when they have to continuously maneuver around all the stalls that are placed every which way

a person can, to grab all the sidewalk they can each day.

    If people are healthier from eating this so called health food...Lol;

it might be from, all the work they went through to get there or it from their favorite stall vendor.

It's an experience in itself, that much I will agree, but it's a far cry from healthy, or a better alternative from real food,

with real ingredients, which people refer to here as western food.

I don't call it that, I call it health, conscience eating,

and since the dirtiest place on anybodies body, bar none is their mouth,

it's something to consider about what we put in it, no?

Not to mention the verdict is still out for me anyway, that the things sold on the street are actually cheaper than in an

establishment. All the junk they sell at these walking markets I can certainly buy from Lazada for better price,

and I didn't have to go anywhere.

If for some reason I find shopping outside to be adventurous, then I can still find things cheaper at the stores.

    Why?

The vendors have to pay crazy rent prices to be on those locations, and then they have to pay even more to the Police,

    to look the other way.

Guess what...the shoppers who haven't woke up yet to figure out things are not such a great deal from the street sellers,

are in fact paying for the vendor to be there, instead of organizing themselves and getting a real business model together,

which would support them into the future, and even perhaps actually put more profit into their hands,

instead of into the Police, and land owner for the few who set up on private locations, like in front of someones home.

Yes those people pay too, and pay big; by the way.

A vendor in front of a house can set them back 30,000 + a month, vendors don't care, they charge the suckers thinking they are getting a deal

by buying from off the street.

My wife gets her nails done from a lady who rent a piece of a corner in a Lotus shopping area.

No walls around this lady, just this stretch of space that Lotus has rented out to her,

for only 20,000 bht a month.

The lady could easily rent the same amount of space, with four walls around her,

and even have her own toilet, but she stays here, because she like the foot traffic.

She can't figure that most of the foot traffic is just walking past her,

as they don't want to be getting their nails done on what amounts to the sidewalk,

where people are just walking by.

I have sat there many times and watched, while my wife gets her nails done by this lady,

who doesn't realize she has a following for her work,

and they will come wherever she lands a true shop at.

She just needs to take on the responsibility to establish herself.

    Will she?

Probably not, Thai's love to have others sign contracts,

but they in fact hate to commit to anything, especially in writing,

and that's all it takes to get the same amount of space these people pay for this sidewalk space,

    as it all essentially is.

I got about halfway through. Can anyone beat that?

I gave up on the first apostrophised plural.

  12. Not a tourist visa but a multi entry o visa which is perhaps a little more complex took 4 days from posting to return in November Only bugbear was that they only accept postal orders. Of course you can also visit the various consulates in the UK for a tourist visa if that is more convenient.

  14. And they wonder, why the tourist numbers are going down.......................coffee1.gif

Not true, they are going up, But they arrive in groups stay in groups and the locals businesses don't prosper, only the Big hotels and tour guides are getting rich, the local Bars restaurants and shops don't get a look in , so its a double edged sword.

This is a piece of bad taxi press. So I give it about two weeks before another

invented story from TAT about how a taxi driver returned 10 million baht a customer

left in the taxi.... Those stories are like clockwork, but this bad news may speed

up the time schedule a bit...

  15. I have an ASUS KO12 phonepad which is a 7 inch screen dual SIM smartphone which I bought from banana IT for around 4000 baht 12 months ago. It is still the same price now.

I have a 12call pay as you go SIM and a Mao Mao extension of 1.5 gb per month at 399 baht.

I use it constantly on my smartphone internet connection and also use the smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot for my laptop. It works perfectly in Roi St and on my various travels. Most pertinetly for you it was fine in Kanthalarom and Ban Nong Hua Chang in SI Saket province.
