  1. Hi

I'm having fun with my first 2 ponds on our small farm in Kalasin. Part decorative (next to the proposed house site) but also functional - the family's supply of bpla nin and pak bung, as well as generally retaining precious water on our 5 rai (rather than letting it run off totally un-utilised)

Last week big rains severely washed out the banks of both (1 is at the upper end and the other about a metre lower, 100m away at the other end of our land).

The British racing green water has been replaced with calf-poo brown.

We're addressing site drainage issues separately - I was just plain overwhelmed by the volume of water cascading off the road and neighbouring properties and down across our site.

But I also need to think through what to do (probably next dry season) to reshape the pond edges, possibly including planting, forming hard edges, terraces etc so these ponds can develop into lasting & attractive ecosystems.

Pond design references online are largely British or N. American.

I would much appreciate any practical suggestions in terms of planting, edge materials/construction from folk with more local experience and the same objectives with their ponds.

  2. Interesting to read how localised the rain is - while there were 2 or 3 rains a day or so ago in KK, here about 80 km away it remains tinder dry. I imagined when rainy season hits it would be widespread and persistent - although I realise the season hasn't truly kicked off yet.

At least the long dry weekend has provided the chance to dig a few relief ditches and plant another load of fruit trees.

Fingers crossed for some damp soon

  3. My wife had a shelving salesman call by yesterday from Udon Thani to give her a quote for shelving, a fridge and a counter for a small convenience shop she is opening in her village.

    Quote came in around 100k.

The fact said salesman was driving a new 3-series aroused my suspicion that this might not be the fairest price. Or he's just a successful guy of course & running a good business.

He mentioned he does a lot of similar fitouts for mia falang in Udon, Khon Kaen etc.

Can anyone suggest good places to look for cheap shop shelves, food displays, etc? Any second hand options?

We're heading off to Makro and Home Pro in KK to have a look now.

  5. Yes I hear it's now persisting down on the farm.

Sorry you lost a golf day.

Let's hope this shower only lasts 3 or 4 days ;)

  6. Is this year's late start for rain unusual?

Our small landholding is in Kalasin. We pllanted a couple dozen fruit trees as well as peanuts and sweet potato over Song Kran - in anticipation of the big wet. It rained one afternoon (and a big rain it was too).

Heading up there again this Wednesday for a week and expecting the worst...

  7. A note for anyone planning a visit to the Preah Vihear temple on the Cambodia / Thai border - no Thais are allowed.

I was surprised to discover this after travelling 3 hours north from Siem Reap with my Thai girlfriend.

  8. I had a Thai colleague tell me yesterday it's because there are many Laotians who fled the Communist Chinese south into northeast Thailand.

I assumed it was much older than that.

But I'd rather hear it from the forum than from Google.

  9. Hi

Looking for any information on setting up small solar powered systems in Thailand. Have looked around a few hardware shops in Bangkok to no avail. But nowhere up country as yet.

Interested in a small system to run a couple of farm systems ie aerate a fish pond and run a small length electric fence off.

  10. I would like to try olive growing in Kalasin.

Sleeping outside over New Years I can confirm it was as cold as Tuscany.

If anyone has any updates on possibility of cuttings (I see the posts above are 6 months old) I would like to follow this up.

My girlfriend says there's a huge tree market held in Chachoengsao before Song Kran and believes ma gaawk trees can be brought there.

    I will let you know.

Also on the hunt for FEIJOA and LOQUAT trees/seedlings

    Any help much appreciated.

  11. Hi

In order for my girlfriend's 78 year old mother to obtain an Australian Visitor's Visa she requires travel insurance for the week she's going to be out there.

Her age is proving a problem - the usual online providers (even Senior Citizens specialists) are coming back with a 65 year old cut-off point.

Was wondering how others have dealt with this. Obviously we aren't the first as this appears to be mandatory.

Would appreciate any advice on Thai insurance providers that could be worth a shot.

    Many thanks

    Richard
