  1. Hi all,

have been informed by the school today that my application for a work permit has been denied, because I am not a qualified teacher, enough though it's a private primary school and I'm from England.

The school have asked me if I can still come to work for them, which would be illegal, I am now wondering is there no route for them to appeal the decision or do we have any grounds to appeal the decision.

Also if I was to work illegally and was caught doing so what would be the consequences

Working without a work permit carries a maximum fine of 100,000 baht and/or a jail term of up to 5 years.

Normally you will pay a fine and be deported from the country.

Do you have a bachelor degree? Than you can get a waiver from the teaching licence.

A private shool is not exampt from that as far as I know, language schools are as are universities.

no I don't have a degree, seems quite unfair for the school as they have a very slim chance of finding a teacher around these parts

Did you include a copy of your marriage certificate with the work permit application? Perhaps they wanted immigration to confirm your non-o was based upon marriage,

A medical certificate is needed to get a work permit. They probably said a private hospital because it will also include getting a blood test for syphilis meaning you can't rust get a 50 baht certificate from a clinic.

Thanks joe, we are going back there on tuesday I will take the marriage cert. with us, do you know anywhere in ubon where I can have the blood test and how much do you think this may cost.

    regards

  5. Hi all,

I have been to the work office to apply for the work permit, all the paperwork has been prepared by the school, we went together to submit the paperwork, but for some reason the head teacher of the school had to leave before everything had been checked, personally I think she was just trying to escape before they asked for the 3000 baht for the permit. Regardless of this the people at the office went on to explain that before they can submit the paperwork I must check with immigration about my visa, to check what, I'm not sure, I was under the impression that I could get a work permit on a non o family visa. they also said I must attend a private hospital to have a full medical.

    any info would be appreciated.

  6. GCSE's are still going, check out the link regarding City and Guilds NVQ's, they go up to level 8.

I did a course a few years back and got Level4 for C++.

    http://www.cityandguilds.com/courses-and-qualifications/qualifications-explained/qualification-comparisons

I'm not having a go but be realstic regardin your qulaifications and you'll have a better chance of gettin a teaching position.

I recently taight for a year in a government school and it was great.

    I see,

well must have changed, mine was in 1992. maybe I should just use my GCSE's then, I have a B in English

  7. NVQ level one is about the same as 3 or 4 GCSE's grade D or E.

A diploma equivalent would need to be level 4 or 5, depending on the overning body.

Please let me know how you go as I still beleive that NES with life experience such as yourself can still

offer more than most Thai English teachers smile.png

And you could also teach them how to tart up the classrooms nicely!

NVQs only go up to level 3, it is a trade based qualifications, and far higher than any GCSE, level 1 means I have been trained to do a skilled trade to a competent level, level 3 is like be trained as a specialist in that trade, you may know it as its old form which was called City & Guilds.

It is more comparable to a diploma i.e. NVQ 1 = first diploma, NVQ 2 = National Diploma and NVQ = Higher Diploma

    Chanobot,

I think you are referring to GNVQ's which I believe are a school qualification, I think they replaced GCSE.

My NVQ is from the London Institute of City and Guilds.

  9. Work permits are not normally tied to your permit to stay date. You should get a one year work permit even though your extension runs out next month. But some offices may have different rules.

thankyou, I see a topic in the teaching forum about, obtaining credits and doing thai culture courses in order to get a work permit do you know anything about this.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/698677-looking-for-first-time-teaching-job-in-isan/

  10. Hi all,

Sorry forgive me but I don't understand about this points/credit system, could someone please explain, because I raised a topic in the work permits forum, asking whether I would qualify for a work permit at a private school even though I don't have any degree or experience. It was indicated in the responses that I would as long as I am a NES and my college diploma(actually a NVQ) would be sufficent.

Would it be because this is a private school or are the regulations the same?

On your degree transcript there should be a list of courses studied and the number of credits given for each course.

The requirements are the same for all schools, but the problems are not with the schools. I know of one teacher that was just hired without any ID. The problems arise when you apply for a work permit.

I dont have a degree, only a NVQ, it's just a certificate, no transcript

  11. If I recall correctly it is 100 baht filing fee and then 3000 baht for the work permit.

    thanks

Hi ubonjoe, do you or anyone else now whether there are conditions regarding how much time left on your existing visa, the school want me to take the application for the work permit next week, but existing Non O extension finishes at the end of February, would it be better to wait and get my new extension before appling for the work permit or does this have no relevance on the work permit

  12. I think the question of whether a Thai co-teacher is required depends on the objective of the particular class (for example, conversation or grammar, reading, writing, listening or speaking), and the level of fluency the NES has in Thai.

If the class is for M5 or M6 who are preparing for university, then clearly a university background is going to be a great help to the NES.

But from the point of view of classroom management, for a class that size experience is going to be more important than a degree any day.

There is no need to have any experience in Thai. You must only use English in the classroom. Some school directors are strict about this.

I find this to be a strange comment, I am embarking on the teaching profession, I have not started yet, but I am having a look around at what everyone is talking about.

The reason I find this strange is because, if for example a chinese person came to teach me chinese and only spoke chinese with no translation, I think the chances of picking the language up would be about 0%.

If you are going to teach in a Thai school, try using Thai and see what happens. You have not done a TEFL course, have you?

    I stand corrected,

I don't have a TEFL, but I have watched many videos of TEFL teachers online and Genki English, who do a good job and I will use I lot of the examples I have seen, i.e. playing games, flashcards and practical activities.

But still to state that it should be strictly English, I don't agree with, when I teach private lessons to high school students, I always use Thai to help, not only speaking thai but writing thai as-well, also with certain words when pronunciation is not quite right I can use the thai alphabet to help them pronounce the word better

  13. The school should really be involved when application is done. Who is going to pay the fee?

You could go an take your wife along to help with the language if needed. I would be sure and have phone number handy for school admin in case there were questions.

    Thanks ubonjoe,

do you know how much the fee is

  14. Hi all,

I looked around the forums and found a link for the WP1 application form which I have give to the school, they have told me that the forms are all ready and that I should take them myself to the department of labour, I queried whether we should go together, she replied that she thinks there is no need for her to go because the forms have been completed perfectly, all I need to do is give her a passport photo, take my passport and NVQ along with the application.

I feel a little bit concerned about this, just in case they have further inquiries, I could take my wife with me, but It is not really my wife's problem and she probably would not have the answers to any of their questions.

  17. You will get a job easily in Korat, but getting a work permit and visa will depend on whether or not you have the required number of credits in education or not. Here in Korat the requirements are being strictly enforced at the moment, and several teachers have had to resort to a tourist visa run every 2 weeks until they can complete the required number of education credits. (they are already holding B.A. degrees) The schools will gladly hire you without the requirements, but I just wanted to let you know about the possible complications.

tesolguru, the credits you are referring to is that stipulated by Immigration or the department of Labour

  18. As posted here before, I also have 400k on permanent deposit for marriage extensions. This on its own was not accepted last time and I was advised the formal rules were under revision. Immigration demanded to see proof of income for daily living expenses to support Thai wife. The evidence I produced was overseas internet banking statements showing regular Thai ATM withdrawals in baht. An amount was not stipulated, just a stream of income over and above the fixed deposit was required to prove I was supporting my Thai wife. I am now saving each ATM receipt for next years evidence.

to me this seems unreasonable, because me and my wife are working towards no longer having to go to the bank, for example we have a tractor which money received is all in cash, will be getting a job at a school, which is paid in cash and we will be buying a rice harvester(rot gieow kaow) which again all monies received will be in cash, so what will we do then, when we are not withdrawing any money from the bank.

  19. 1 post removed.

Yes, depending on the labor office and the exact kind of school they could still get you a work permit.

Will they have to go to the labour office before applying for the work permit?

The labor department is THE place that issues work permits. Please page me if you'd be interested in a teaching position in Ubon, making more money, plus the possibility of a place on campus, you'd have to share with me.

The biggest place on campus, I've even got a nice carport.

Please be aware that this position will be online tomorrow morning at ajarn. com. Will do what I can. 15 K sucks, believe me.

And I'm sure that I know the "private institution." Some people there only work there a say....

Stay on your Non-O, as this will keep you independent from any school issues. Cheers-wai2.gif alt=wai2.gif pagespeed_url_hash=1722055545 width=20 height=20>

Thanks sirchai, I will keep that in mind for the future, but I am quite far from Ubon city about 60km and I have my own house, with 2kids who also go to the school, so regardless of money, its near home and my kids go there so it will be quite convenient. But if things don't work out I will let you know.

I was also told this that they want to see ATM receipt along withe the 400k in bank for 3months NOW is this the LAW, Ubon

so what did you do, did you have the ATM slips.

  21. Hi,

Does anyone know whether the 400K in the bank, for an Non O extension, does it have to have come from a transfer from abroad or is a cash deposit acceptable.

reason being, me and my wife are looking to buy a rice harvesting machine(rot giaow khao) we have worked out the maths, this venture will probably take me under the 400K, but then the return in the first season of cutting rice, which is all in cash, could then be deposited back into the bank to bring my balance back to the required 400K
