  1. So the road safety people know " MOST drivers do not know the roads and go over the speed limit".... mmmm mobilize the police more. Don,t chase 500 baht helmet fines from "WEALTHY" farangs, go and save multiple lives, put unsafe vehicles off the road, buses, trucks, utes and cars. Yes there is a cost to improve, but business operators will do nothing unless forced to make safety number 1. Driver education, upgrade vehicle fleets, govt incentives, How much is a life worth?

  2. Its 3rd world mentality, blame the politicians, yes the truck was probably old, the driver just doing as told, for fear of losing his job.

60 years ago, the western world grew up, and started to change such practices. Yes Thai is slow, but hey, you expats don,t complain how cheap it is, improve all the safety requirements overnight, you would all go back to your home country cos prices spiral to pay for all. RIP 12 humans.

  3. Seriously thinking, not all Thais are bad drivers, you can see crazies behind the wheel in any country. Just so many more motorbikes on the roads here, and yes, lack of enforcement..... think seatbelts and helmets. Vehicles without airbags, I see Thais do not want pay more for airbags. The govt need get real and make airbags mandatory in all new passenger cars, as done in many other countries.

  4. Yes Tropo, you are correct, but despite RBT's, the holiday periods are still the high risk times on roads, and some do take the risk. Why? Cannot get taxi, cannot afford taxi, being drunk impairs their judgement, so they drive any way. One can read in the papers police reporting with wonder, how many drivers have been boozing, and well over the prescribed limit.

Overall, in Australia, the strict road laws and proper enforcement are working, something sadly missing in Thailand.

But we digress, the issue is moronic people tossing water in people faces, read again some comments just now, people get injured (ear drums etc) just by walking around during Songkran. No matter how one gets involved ( bike, car or on foot), the risk of some form of injury is increased. Just need better education of the dangers over all. Gee, with some of the things I have read ( eye problems, ear problems, skin problems health problems)you soap box guys should advise everyone to avoid Songkran, not just bike riders.

  5. Percentage wise, the increased risk of accident is quite small. Its the same to me as riding a bike any other day, just go much slower around the water thrower.

  6. My comment referred to the overall increase of road carnage at the times mentioned. Many on this forum talk only of the water "incidents". Yes they are the cause of some tragedies, but alcohol and revelry cause much more.

  7. I am not condoning the minority morons as this picture shows, photos such as this are set up by people with poor self esteem, post the pic basically says "hey look at me, I make her crash!" Its not just moronic westeners, Thais do same, but overall 100's of thousands of people enjoy Songkran without stupid intent.

  8. Its really no different than countries elsewhere. Easter and New Year in Australia is always worse for road tragedy. More people on roads, longer trips than normal for holiday journey, so get tired..... and more boozy drivers, idiots I think. Yes, they do not suffer water in face, but overall its much the same elsewhere, except far more motorbikes so more deaths and injuries will occur.
