  1. Koh Larn also known as Coral Island is the easiest to get to there are regular boats from the new pier. For any of the other islands you will need to charter yourself a boat or join a group who are chartering a boat, if it is just yourself or a friend or two then a speed boat will do and you can find many for hire on Pattaya and Jomtien beaches.

There are two groups of islands; the near and the far islands, Koh Larn is the largest of the near islands and is 45 minutes by ferry, it has two smaller sister islands and I think it is also possible to visit one of them (Koh Sak) but the other is privately owned.

Of the far islands there are five islands of any size, best visiting by speed boat due to the distance, avoid Koh Rin the most southerly of the islands as this is frequently used for target practice by the Thai navy, I think you are able to visit most islands but are not allowed to stay over night, so if you do get left behind, wait till dark and light a fire, you will soon be picked up by the Thai police or navy.

  2. How many of you actually believe that "wiring" is the reason for the delay?

I watched a Discovery Channel episode on the flutter test. I was beside myself when they showed that the composite body almost came apart during the test. The body actually did come loose from some of its fasteners and moved.

I was originally excited to fly on the A380 Now, well I just think its a Scarebus. I can do without getting on one of those for the first few years of operation.

Wiring. yeah, right!!!! It takes you 2 years to get the wiring right? OK!!!

Have you actually seen French wiring???

Yes I saw that documentary too, they were testing the aircraft’s maximum window of operation, they were flying in a manor that the plane should never be flown in normal use, a part failed, there was a bang and… the aeroplane did not instantly break up mid air, it landed safely, no one was hurt, they looked at the part that failed, re engineered it, and the plane was flying within a few days.

Personaly I am looking forward to my first flight on a A380. :o

  3. Russian Tourist hurt in paragliding accident on Jomtien beach.

A warning to you now, that if you take part in extreme sports here in Thailand, please make sure you are fully aware of the risks involved and that you are fully insured for any injuries you may sustain from participation in such sports.

In this case, from the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital, medical staff admitted Mr. Artur Plaponov aged 32 from Russia who was badly hurt in a paragliding accident on Jomtien Beach in front of Soi 18. Details received by us are sketchy but it appears that the speed boat that was towing the parachute and Mr. Plaponov lost control and the victim collided with a light tower on the beach itself and he fell 30 feet to the ground.

His injuries have not been fully examined and we received this story before the Police investigation began but we understand the boat company will fully cooperate with the Police and the victim.

I misread the article, I thought it said "...but we understand the boat company will fully compensate the Police and the victim." :o

  4. Had it been the other way round, two farang, high on drink and drugs, after watching porno DVD’s gone out and raped, then battered to death a nice, law abiding Thai Lady then been caught and sentenced to death would not their respective governments, heads of state, prime ministers, presidents, etc, be calling for their miserable lives to be speared???

I was very impressed on the speed of the victim’s family to say that capital punishment would not have been the wish of the victim; I fell very uneasy at the speed these guys were caught, charged, convicted and sentenced, here in the UK capitol punishment was abolished 50 years ago and many after the sentence was carried out new evidence came to light which made many convictions unsafe.

Remember many of these people have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives, only a few such as Freed West & Harold Shipman escaped this with the ultimate sacrifice; Ian Huntley has made a number of attempts.

I did Jomtien to new airport the other day, fare 1200 and certain I was told when booking that tolls were included.

The driver was trying to say something to me when we departed but I did not understand, on reflection I think he wanted money for tolls, he managed to get to the airport without using any toll-ways but it took 2 hours, luckily I allow plenty of time.

If you don't know the way (tollway) you should not book a Car including Tollways. Allways pay by yourself. You paid 1200, anyway to much, 800 was it to the Dong Muang and it' still the same to the new Airport :o . Price went up a good 40 percent. :D , I think the way is much shorter. Hopefully you didn't gave him a Tip.

With the new Airport there where two fary tales everybody was telling for a year or more. First one, there will be double Amount of Tourists, buying everything, incl. Condo's and Houses like no tomorrow and the second one, of course Taxis will be cheaper and it will just be a short ride to the Airport. :D:D:D 2 hours :D I usually was faster at the old one.

    Limo not Meter Taxi…

I know the difference, yes some of those taxis are nothing more than skips on wheels though so called limos a not much better still worth the extra 50%, though this one had the UV film peeling from the glass otherwise it was OK, smooth ride but the driver spoke no English.

Had a better on pick me up on arrival, waiting for me with a board with my name on, cost 1200B booked on the internet with http://www.bb-lets.com/taxi.html It was a better car and driver and the tolls are included and he used the toll way.

  8. Yet another short circuit. Don't these people know about fuses, breakers and earthing systems? Further proof, as if it were needed, never let a Thai workman near your premises. I do all my own electrics and water to UK standards...

Would like to do same but how do you do this to a 10 year old condo on the 5th floor with no earthing???

  9. Hi there,

I will be arriving at the end of the month and was wondering which transport service to use?

There has been much said about buses that leave 3 times a day and dodging up some back stairs to catch a taxi dropping off at departures, but I will be arriving with probably 40-50Kg of baggage so I do not want the hassle of dodging up the back stairs, I will be arriving late so I certainly do not want to wait 10 hours for a bus and after travelling for 18 hours I just want to get to Jomtien as quickly as possible without being ripped off.

Therefore dose anybody know what the following option cost and where to find them:

    • Airport Limo cost? (Presume it will be the same as DM, they have a stand as you exit customs, avoid the touts who are working for an unofficial substandard limo service who frog march you round the airport to their operation room).
    • Taxi? (I have heard there is an official price of 1050THB to Pattaya, also big queues and having to catch shuttle bus).
    • Pre-arranged pickup (any recommendations, good price and decent car/driver).

  10. I do not think there is that much difference all year round.

I dive October and April, there is little difference normally the water temperature is 30 + 2 degrees C, and the visibility was better the week before I arrived, so I am always told.

There are 2 wreaks, (maybe 3 now as reported a few weeks ago) one off the far island, Koh Phai and the other down at Samae San.

I have taken plenty of photos which are available to view on my website just to wet your apatite.

Anyway DS have a great time.

  11. Thaksin 'could be extradited'

The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy has already begun thinking about the possibility of trying to extradite ousted Premier Thaksin Shinawatra from Britain if -- as expected -- he is found to be linked with corruption or abuse of power....

    Full story

    Bangkok Post 25 Sept 2006

The law in England has what is called due process, they will never be able to extradite him from, there, unless they can prove that he committed mass murder!

Britain will extradite any criminal to any country that has an extradition treaty with as long as the criminal is not likely to face the death penalty.

But under British law extradition requests require substantial proof (except for requests from USA) before the extradition will take place.

Britain had an extradition treaty with Thailand but this may be suspended until such time as the UK recognises the government of Thailand to be legitimate.

  12. Does England want him? :D

What about his Visa status? He isn't PM anymore? No official passport, right?

    :o

Probably apply for political asylum and get welfare aid…

I suppose as soon as Thailand can put together a government that has some creditability they will request that his assets worldwide be frozen and returned to Thailand.

As for Thaksin, he is a wily old fox that will spend the rest of his life fighting extradition requests, flitting from one country to another…

  13. Anyone know what the coloured armbands and ribbons signify? The ones in the photos all seem to be yellow but the soldiers I've seen around the port and PTT depot are all wearing blue ones. Different units, I guess?

I thought the yellow ribbons were for allegiance to the king...

troops wearing blue ones worries me…

  14. Why isn't the forum showing who is on line and how many? Surely, today will set a record for the number of people on line at one time.

Last time I checked about an hour ago when I was logging on, there were about over 900 members at the same time just for this thread

This site has been very buisy and at times I have had problems logging on so it may have been removed to allow the site to work faster.
