I believe that is a misunderstanding on the immigration office/officers part of how the rule is really written. ????

There is NOTHING in the rule in thai or english that says for the combination method that you must bank 400K baht. ???? What it says is the seasoning requirements are in effect for the banked portion <- That means what you're banking has to be in the account for 2 months before you apply, must remain in the account for 3 months after and then the balance can't go below 50% of that amount the rest of the year (no matter how much you're banking) ????

I know of a couple immigration offices that told people that, one person I spoke with filed an appeal and had their initial denial of extension overturned (he was using 200K baht banked to make up the short fall of his monthly transfers). Another person wasn't bold enough to tell the officer he disagreed and wanted to file an appeal and I don't know what happened in his case.

As Scott424 correctly suggested, GO talk to the immigration office in person, BUT make it clear you know that there is no "must bank 400K baht" in the combination method and push it as far up the flag pole as you feel comfortable with if you're getting a different answer

I tried to apply for combination method last year as I was a couple of 00 short one month out of 12 (but well over 1 million on average over 12 month period, but irrelevant), and the IO refused to accept the combination method. He said either minimum 65k a month (no exceptions) OR 800k. This was at Chiang Mai.

Yeah, you are right there. Can also be hard to find an insurance that actually covers motorcycle driving in Thailand at all.

First class insurance on any motorcycle covers accidents, as does accident insurance. As does many travel insurance policies if someone has a valid licence. Equally, if the accident was the other driver's fault, then the should be paying out as should their insurance

Exactly! Anyone who bitches about a lousy 300 Baht entry fee can just stay home <deleted>. MANY countries require some form of fee from foreign visitors, in most cases a lot more than 300 Baht.

What you are failing to take into account is that those of us who live here will be treated as tourists, so what benefit do we get? There is no indication that those on non immigrant visas etc will be excluded from this, so what's your response to that?

Has anyone managed to get into the Grand Palace for free with a pink ID card? Try as I may, I've always been stuck with the 500 baht foreigner fee whenever I have to take a visiting friend there.

It's the ultimate test of your "Thainess."

    Paul Laew

The pink card specifically says that it is for Non-Thai Nationals so that's not really a good test as the card proves that you aren't Thai

Saying that, from personal experience, there have been a number of places where I have qualified for the 'Thai' entry price with a pink ID card (and where not even a Work Permit will suffice)

You could download the rules here if you want to. Amendment to police order 138/2557 See the clause 2.18 changes.

It even states a average income is allowed but many office will not accept it.

I transferred over 1 m baht last year in total, but one month was below 65k, and Chiang Mai office wouldn't accept either the total or an average for the income method for retirement purposes.

Yes, it's nice to finally have a Thai ID number.

Easy to install and use, shows my first dose. (top right pick with computer screen and dripping syringe).

No certificate yet for me until I get my second dose.

If you've been vaccinated here then you now have a Thai ID number. 13 digits, begins with 600000nnnnnnn, should be somewhere in your vaccination paperwork.

Its not a Thai ID number.

I had one already (Pink card and yellow book) and the ID number for the vaccination isn't the same as my Thai ID number.

As a matter of note, numbers starting with 6 are for foreigners who have permanent residency.

  7. Try sending a power of attorney specifically for the purpose that you are trying to achieve (in this case, in connection with your bank account number xxxx) along with a signed copy of your documentation (current passbook, passport, address details etc.) along with a covering letter addressed to the bank explaining that you are abroad at the moment (with proof) and that they can call to verify, which in theory should be sufficient

  8. My local garage only recommends the front facing cameras as he has had a lot of issues with dual rear and front (although I would prefer both to be honest). I had two models of rear and front facing cameras (can't remember the brand, but not a cheap make) and both had to be repaired and ended up replacing them with front facing only

I had to tell the guy at the car showroom to just shut up and do what I'm telling you - he wanted me to have a very dark tint but I was having none of it.

Most but not all of my driving is in the evening when it's dark and I know the tint can be a problem.

The salesman really didn't want me to have this car delivered with anything lighter than what he was describing - which was far too dark - even in the daylight.

The problem of course if that it's daylight when you order the car so you kind of have to make a guess.

Since I took delivery of the car I'm very glad I told this idiot a very firm no on the much darker tint he offered because I would have went a shade or two lighter for night driving if I knew then what I know now.

I would second that. I had a Thai friend help me get my car tinted when I first came here, and recommended the same level of tint that she had in her car. After a few weeks, I went back to the shop to get it removed and replaced with the lightest tint that they could do. I could barely see out at night (in my 50s, so not too decrepit, yet) and thought it was really dangerous, particularly along mountain roads at nights, without a lot of street lighting. It is not surprising that there are so many accidents with the level of tint that many Thais have in their cars. I had the windscreen replaced, although sometimes at night, I wind-down the windows when coming out of a junction, so not ideal (particularly when raining).

Get the lightest tint you can have is my recommendation. Don't judge the tint on daytime driving, which encourages a far darker tint than is safe.

For reference, Malaysia permits 70% front, 50% side and 30% for rear which seems sensible

  10. You might be able to fly to U Tapao from CNX with Nok Air, from where, a taxi is only something like 1000 baht, although the cost of the flights is somewhat astronomical at the moment, so what you'll gain one way, you'll lose another and cost wise, it may end up the same as a private taxi from CM to BKK

Get a Giff Gaff sim sent to your brother and have him send it on.

Despite what Kwasaki says above it is less about any long-standing relationship with the bank (which counts for zip) and more about their technology. Several banks cannot/will not accept an overseas number for OTP's.  I am with 5 UK banks and only HSBC use my Thai number for OTP's.

One obvious reason for getting the UK sim is that you have to be (or seen to be) a UK resident to open a bank account in the UK; if the banks extend that principle to existing account holders then those with overseas addresses and contact numbers may become a target.

Lloyds and State Bank of India UK accept my Thailand (+66) mobile for OTPs

No minimum age ie as soon as the child has a birth certificate and ID number he/she can be registered as owners. As @blackcab wrote - once registered to a minor the property cannot be leased or usufruct. If you want to lease the property you should get it done while registered under the current owner, and later transfer the ownership to your child. I am not sure the Land office people will allow doing both the lease and the transfer at the same time though.

Although in theory, having a subordinate right encumbering the land shouldn't affect the transfer of the superior title to a new owner, in practice,  I have been told by several people that there have been problems with the Land Office, who have questioned the transaction and/or refused to effect the transfer without first removing the encumbrance (i.e. the usufruct etc.) so this definitely seems one that is best dealt with through a local lawyer

  13. I don't know the law regarding the legal capacity of minors. However, I would make a couple of general comments:

Firstly, invariably it is better to have a superficiary or an usufruct than a lease, as there are well-documented issues with leases in Thailand under Thai law (basically, leases here are glorified tenancies, which don't offer the same rights as people expect according to Western concepts of what a lease is or should do)

Furthermore, having a subordinate right (e.g. a lease/superficiary/usufruct) doesn't prevent the land/property being sold: it would only prevent you from being evicted during the currency of your agreement, so you could end up with a new landlord unless you have some ancillary agreement (which may or may not be legal under Thai law) pursuant to which the landlord agrees not to sell unless they have your consent etc.

Unless you are a permanent resident of Thailand not a temporary resident (Non-Imm Visa of any class with extension) then legally you are required to carry your passport at all times outside your residence. Many will argue about this but it is up to the officer that stops you on what he will accept. He may accept photo copies or photo's on a mobile phone but he may not accept any of them and only accept you original passport. The risk is up to you on what you carry but if you are stopped then it is up to the police officer on what he will accept. I have a shoulder bag and I carry my passport, my bank books, my blue book for the truck, my wallet with my cards and cash in but I carry an extra metal folder with my Thai drivers license in so that if I get stopped then I can show my drivers license without them seeing my wallet.

Please quote the law based on which you are purporting to give definitive legal advice

The fact that the police sometimes require the original of documents does not mean that that is necessarily the law that you have to have them with you at all times.

My understanding is that that the law requires all persons (including Thais) to have their ID on them at all times. Thais obviously have Thai ID cards, and for foreigners (even those with PR who are not issued a Thai ID card but only a booklet and possibly a Pink ID card), this is 'interpreted' by the police to be the actual passport

I am not disputing what some police may require as a matter of practice, and I am not disputing that trying to argue the legalities of Thai law with a Thai policeman (or woman) is invariably a waste of time and energy, but saying that something 'is the law' isn't the same as saying that 'the police can require xyz'

Even if you are required to provide your original passport to immigration to inspect, they are meant to permit you to produce the same to a local police station or get someone to bring to the station for you if that's where they take you

No...Bangkok Bank outside of Thailand does not accept individual accounts. He must deposit/transfer directly to Pattaya account

That's not correct. You can deposit funds at the London branch for a Thailand account. I have done exactly that, although I would recommend against it for several reasons including that you would get a much better rate of exchange using Transferwise/Wise and it would be received more quickly also

Most landlord won't take the trouble to do it if he knows the tenant is going to stay one year or less.

If not, the landlord is going to be very busy doing unprofitable task when the tenant leaves and another one comes along.

If the tenant leaves, then the landlord has to unregister the tenant from the yellow house book again so it's too troublesome for them.

It's the tenant's legal responsibility to change the registered address in the yellow book, not the landlord's

If the tenant moves within the same Amphur, then that is an easy process.

In theory, it should be straightforward to change district also, but some districts are more difficult than others. The main importance of the Yellow Book process is having your name (transliterated into Thai) registered on the Thai national database and having a unique ID number (starting with 6 for Non Thai nationals). Once you have your ID number, changing the Yellow Book registration should be a straightforward process (you will also need to change your Pink Card as well if you have one, as of course, the address will be different, and also your Driving Licence)

If renting short-term, this is of course a disadvantage of the yellow book system, which is why generally only those with long-term residences apply for them, but that isn't an actual requirement of the process
